Alpaca Keeping

A small, quiet herd that hums, grazes and grows a fleece every year.

Alpaca keeping means looking after a small herd of these gentle South American camelids on your own land, usually as pets, pasture companions or a source of soft fleece. They are calm, quiet, easy on fences and pasture, and toilet in a few shared dung piles, so daily care is short. The catch is the herd itself: alpacas are herd animals and must never be kept alone, so you start with at least two and usually three, plus fenced pasture, a simple shelter, a camelid-savvy vet, a shearer once a year and zoning that allows livestock.

01

What keeping alpacas involves

Every day you check that each animal is up, eating and chewing cud, refill fresh water, put out grass hay and scoop the herd's shared dung piles (about 15-30 minutes). Every few weeks you feel each alpaca's backbone and ribs to score its body condition, and every 6-10 weeks you trim toenails. Once a year, in late spring, a shearer takes off the fleece so the herd does not overheat in summer, and your vet sets a vaccination and parasite plan for your area. Herd days, when you catch everyone for toenails, a body condition check and a fence walk, take half a day and are the physical part: catching, lifting feet and hauling hay bales.

02

Why people love alpacas

  • They are quiet: a soft hum is their usual sound, so neighbors rarely notice them.
  • They are light on land, with padded feet and a few tidy dung piles that make free garden compost.
  • Each animal grows a fleece every year that you can sell, swap or send to a mill.
  • A calm, halter-trained herd is relaxing to be around, and many owners walk theirs on a lead.

03

Herd, vet and zoning rules

Two or more, one vet, one shearer, the right zoning

Never keep one alpaca

A lone alpaca is stressed and can stop eating. Start with at least two, and three is better so one is never left alone when another goes to the vet.

Keep a single sex.

Gelded males (wethers) are the usual first herd. Do not mix intact males with females unless you plan to breed.

Check zoning first.

Alpacas are livestock in most towns, so call your county or town zoning office to confirm livestock is allowed on your parcel and how many animals per acre.

Find a camelid-savvy vet before the animals arrive.

Many farm vets do not treat alpacas, and you need one who will vaccinate, set a deworming plan and come out in an emergency.

Book a shearer for once a year, in spring.

An unshorn alpaca can die of heat stress in summer.

Ask your vet about meningeal worm (carried by deer and snails in much of the eastern US) and about selenium, which many soils lack.

04

Alpacas only, or a llama too?

Open a card for the first thing to do this week. Adding a llama puts its halter into the herd kit.

Alpacas onlyA pair or trio of gelded males is the simplest herd, and the base kit covers it.

Start here

Ask two breeders for a pair or trio of gelded males that already live together and are halter-trained, and visit to watch them being caught and handled.

Llama keepingSome owners add a gelded llama as a herd guard against dogs and coyotes, or for trekking with a pack. A llama is about twice an alpaca's size, so it needs its own larger halter.

Start here

If you want a larger guard or trekking animal alongside your alpacas, visit a llama breeder and ask for a gelded, halter-trained adult that has lived with alpacas before.

Land, fencing and shelter

  • Plan on about one acre of pasture for three to five alpacas, less if you feed hay year-round.
  • Use 4-5 ft woven or no-climb fencing. Alpacas rarely test fences, but the fence's main job is keeping dogs and coyotes out, and barbed wire snags fleece and skin.
  • Give the herd a three-sided shelter facing away from the prevailing wind, with shade for summer. Heat and humidity are a bigger risk to alpacas than cold.
  • Keep a small catch pen or corner where you can gently walk the herd in for toenails and checks.

06

Skills to learn first

Catching and haltering

Walk the herd into a small pen, steady the alpaca by the neck and shoulder, and fit the halter high on the nose bone so it never slides down over the soft nose.

Body condition scoring

Fleece hides weight loss, so feel the backbone behind the shoulders every few weeks instead of trusting your eyes.

Toenail trimming

Lift one foot at a time and trim the nail level with the pad.

Reading the herd

An alpaca lying apart, not chewing cud or skipping hay is sick. Take its temperature and call the vet the same day.

07

How to get started

Zoning, a farm visit, a vet and a shearer, then the herd

08

What trips beginners up

What to expect

  • Expect alpacas to be wary of being touched at first. Most tolerate handling rather than seek it, and trust builds over months.
  • Expect the first toenail trim and first shearing day to feel awkward. Ask the breeder or shearer to show you once.
  • Expect spitting now and then, nearly always aimed at another alpaca over food.

Habits to drop

  • Do not buy a single alpaca, or a bottle-raised male. A male raised by people can treat humans as rivals and become aggressive as an adult.
  • Do not judge weight by eye. A full fleece can hide a thin animal for weeks.
  • Do not feed grain or treats freely. Hay and pasture plus a camelid mineral is the diet, and rich feed causes obesity and digestive trouble.
09

Where to learn more

The US breed association publishes a free owners guide and short care videos, and its farm finder lists breeders near you. Most breeders sell with ongoing advice included, so buying from someone nearby gives you a mentor for your first year.

10

What the kit covers

The animals, land and services are the big costs and none of them is on Amazon: pet-quality gelded males usually cost a few hundred to about $1,500 each, shearing runs around $30-60 per animal a year, and a vet farm call is extra. The lines below are the handling, feeding and health basics a small herd needs on day one. Buy one halter per animal and keep the mineral topped up year-round.

Two fawn alpacas in full, dense fleece standing in long grass
A year of fleece, ready for the shearer
11

Gear up the herd

The first three lines (the alpacas, the fenced pasture and shelter, and the hay) are not things you buy online. For the rest, compare the options and set your tiers in the herd kit. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The llama halter stays out until you add a llama.

Two or three alpacas from a breeder

Essential · Your herd

Alpacas must live in a herd, so a lone animal is not an option. A pair or trio of halter-trained gelded males is the gentlest first herd.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon. Buy from a breeder (the breed association's farm finder lists them), ask for health and vaccination records, and line up a camelid-savvy vet and a shearer before they arrive.

Fenced pasture with a three-sided shelter

Essential · Housing

Fencing keeps dogs and coyotes out, and the shelter gives shade in summer and a windbreak in winter.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon in practical form. Buy 4-5 ft woven or no-climb fence and posts from a farm store, and build or buy a simple three-sided run-in shed.

Grass hay supply

Essential · Feed

Grass hay is most of an alpaca's diet whenever pasture is short, which in most places is several months a year.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon at a sensible price. Buy clean, mold-free grass hay by the bale from a local farmer or feed store (price is per bale); skip rich alfalfa as the main hay.

Alpaca halter

Essential · Handling

A well-fitted halter is how you catch, lead and hold an alpaca for toenails, vet checks and shearing day.
