Ant Keeping

Raise a whole colony from a single queen on your desk.

Ant keeping is raising a live ant colony at home, usually starting from one queen in a test tube and ending with thousands of workers in a clear nest you can watch. You feed them sugar and insects, keep the nest damp and escape-proof, and get to see things most people never do, like a queen tending her first eggs or workers shuffling larvae toward the warm side of the nest. It asks for a few minutes a week and a small kit, and the colony can live for years.

01

What keeping ants involves

One queen, then a few thousand workers

A colony starts as one mated queen. She seals herself away, lays a small clutch of eggs and raises her first workers on her own body reserves. Once those workers arrive, your job begins: offer a drop of sugar water and a small piece of insect two or three times a week, keep the water supply topped up, and clear out leftovers before they mold. The colony grows in steps, from a test tube to a small nest with a foraging area (keepers call it an outworld), then to bigger nests as numbers climb. Most of the hobby is watching. A gel-filled toy ant farm is a different thing: it holds workers with no queen, so it dies out in a few weeks.

02

Choosing a first species

Pick a species that is native to your state.

It is legal to keep without a permit, it suits your climate, and you can catch it yourself.

Pavement ants (Tetramorium immigrans)

Tough, fast growing, eat almost anything. The most forgiving first colony in much of the US.

Black garden ants and their relatives (Lasius)

Calm and hardy, common across the northern states. Growth is slow in the first year.

Carpenter ants (Camponotus)

Large and easy to see, with no sting. Very slow at first, so expect a handful of workers for many months.

Field ants (Formica)

Quick, active foragers. They stress easily, so keep the nest dark and still.

Skip fire ants and harvester ants for now.

Both sting hard, and fire ants are expert escapers that are illegal to move in many areas.

Check that the queen starts her colony without eating (called fully claustral).

Queens of other species must be fed from day one, which is harder to get right.

04

The care routine

Sugar, protein, water and a winter rest

Sugar for the workers

Mix one part white sugar with three or four parts water, or thin a little honey. Serve it in a liquid feeder or as a small drop so nobody drowns.

Protein for the brood

Larvae only grow on insect protein. Cut mealworms, crickets or fruit flies are standard. Never feed insects from outdoors, which can carry pesticide or mites.

Moisture

Ants need a damp end and a dry end so they can choose. Watch for condensation or a damp sponge in the nest, and top up before it dries completely.

Reading the colony

A pile of larvae and a fat, shiny queen mean things are going well. Trash piling up means it is time to clean the foraging area.

Winter rest

Species from cold-winter regions need two to four months at 40 to 50 F each winter, with water but little food. A wine cooler, an unheated garage or the warmest shelf of a fridge works. Skipping it shortens the queen's life.

Moving house

To move a colony from an old tube, connect it to a fresh tube, cover the new one and shine light on the old one. They relocate within a few days.

05

What trips beginners up

What to expect, and habits to drop

  • Year one is quiet. Many species end their first season with 10 to 50 workers, and some queens are infertile or die for no reason you can find. Starting two or three queens improves your odds.
  • Checking too often is the top colony killer. Vibration and light make a founding queen abandon or eat her brood.
  • A nest that is too big goes badly. A tiny colony in a large nest uses spare rooms as a trash pile, and mold follows. Stay in the tube longer than feels right.
  • Escapes come from a worn barrier or a lid left ajar. Recoat the barrier when ants start getting a grip on it.
  • Flooding and drowning: tilting a test tube, over-watering a nest or leaving an open pool of sugar water kills workers fast.
  • Overfeeding leaves rotting food. Offer a piece of insect about the size of the queen's body for a small colony, and take out what is left the next day.
  • Mixing colonies does not work. Queens of most species fight to the death, and workers from two colonies attack each other.
06

Laws and safety

  • In the US, moving live ants across state lines requires a federal plant-pest permit. That is why you buy from a seller in your own state, or catch your own. Ordering queens from overseas is illegal without a permit.
  • Never release a colony outdoors unless it is a species you collected in that same area. Non-native ants can become damaging invasives. If you have to give up a colony, pass it to another local keeper or freeze it.
  • Some ants sting or spray formic acid. A few people have serious allergic reactions to stings, so if you react badly to bee or wasp stings, stick to species that cannot sting.
  • Wash your hands after feeding and cleaning, and keep feeder insects in a sealed tub away from the kitchen.
07

Where to learn more

Ant keeping is small enough that the best help comes from other keepers. Forums and community groups will identify a queen from a photo within hours, and their keeper journals show month by month what a healthy colony of your species looks like. Species pages on the science databases tell you whether a queen is fully claustral, how big colonies get and whether they need a winter rest.

08

Why the kit looks like this

The founding stage is nearly free: a test tube, water and cotton are the whole setup for the first two months, so that is all you need on day one. The nest, escape barrier and feeding tools only matter once workers hatch, and you can order them while you wait. Buy a small nest sized for a young colony rather than a showpiece, because a nest that is too large causes more problems than it solves. Sugar water comes from your kitchen. Heating is an add-on, not a default: most native species do fine at normal room temperature and just grow faster with a warm spot.

09

Stock the ant room

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there. The first line, the queen herself, is not something you buy online: you catch her or get her from a keeper in your state. The two heating lines join the kit once you switch on the Heated Nest add-on.

Queen ant or starter colony

essential · Livestock

There is no colony without a mated queen. Workers alone cannot reproduce and die out within weeks.

Not sold on Amazon · catch her or buy in-state

Not sold on Amazon. Catch a queen yourself for free after a summer mating flight, or buy a native species from a hobby seller in your own state (interstate shipping needs a federal permit). A queen with her first few workers typically runs $20 to $60. Ask the seller for the species name and when the queen was caught.

Glass test tubes (16 x 150 mm)

essential · Founding setup

A test tube with a water reservoir is the standard home for a new queen. It holds humidity for months and lets you see the brood without opening anything.

Once the colony outgrows its tube it needs chambers to live in and an open area to forage, eat and dump trash. A clear nest is also what lets you watch them.

Pick a small one with a built-in water system and a lid. You do not need it until the colony has 10 to 20 workers. Avoid gel or loose-sand toy farms, which are not made for a colony with a queen. Some nests ship with test tubes or a small tool kit. If yours includes forceps or a feeder, switch those lines out.
