Antique Collecting

Learn to spot the real thing on a crowded shelf, then take it home.

You can start with your eyes and your phone: walking an antique mall, picking things up and looking up what they sold for costs nothing. Antique collecting is hunting for objects roughly 100 years old or older (furniture, silver, ceramics, glass, jewelry, paper) and learning enough to tell an honest old piece from a later copy. The draw is the detective work. Every mark, tool cut and worn edge is a clue, and the reward is a useful, well-made object with a story, often for less than its modern equivalent costs new. The kit is small and cheap. The real spending is on the antiques, and that is entirely up to you.

What antique collecting actually involves

Most of the hobby is looking. A typical outing is an hour or two on your feet at an estate sale, an auction preview, a flea market or an antique mall, handling far more than you buy. In the trade, an antique is 100 years old or older. Vintage usually means 20 to 99 years old, and plenty of collectors happily mix the two. At home, the other half begins: reading marks, comparing sold prices, and slowly building a mental library of what real age looks and feels like. Collections that hold their interest (and their value) tend to be narrow. Ten good pieces of one kind teach you more than a hundred random ones.

Pick a lane to start in

Five fields, one to begin with

FurnitureChairs, chests and tables you can use every day. Solid old furniture often sells for less than new flat-pack, but you need room at home and a way to haul it.

Start here

At your next estate sale, pull one drawer all the way out of every chest you pass. Look at the joints at the corners and the underside of the drawer bottom, and note which ones show uneven hand cuts and which show perfect machine cuts.

Silver And MetalwareFlatware, serving pieces, brass and copper. Hallmarks make silver one of the easiest fields to date precisely, and sterling always keeps its metal value.

Start here

Check the back of every spoon and fork in a thrift store flatware bin for the word "sterling" or a row of tiny stamped symbols, then look the marks up at home.

Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks
Ceramics And GlassPlates, vases, pressed and blown glass. There is a huge supply at low prices, base marks are well documented, and condition is everything.

Start here

Turn over ten plates or vases at an antique mall and photograph each base mark. Match them against a free marks database before you buy any of them.

The Potteries marks index
JewelryBrooches, rings and lockets. Small and wearable, with construction details that date a piece, though precious metal and stones need careful testing.

Start here

Read how clasps, pin backs and cuts changed by decade, then date the pieces in a family jewelry box using only the hardware on the back.

Antique Jewelry University
Paper And EphemeraPostcards, maps, photographs, advertising and letters. It is the cheapest entry point and stores flat in a box, but light and damp ruin it quickly.

Start here

Go through a dealer's dollar box of postcards or trade cards and pull five from one town or one subject. Paper is the cheapest way to own something truly old.

The Ephemera Society of America

Open a lane to see its first step. Silver And Metalware, Ceramics And Glass, Jewelry, and Paper And Ephemera each add their own care or testing gear to the kit. Furniture needs nothing beyond the base kit.

03

How to tell old from made to look old

Wear in the right places

Real use rounds the front edge of a chair seat, the rim of a foot and the handle of a drawer. Wear that is even all over, or shows up where no hand or floor ever touched, was added on purpose.

Tool marks

Hand-cut joints are slightly uneven, and boards sawn before about 1850 show straight saw lines. Curved saw arcs, identical joints and Phillips-head screws point to later work.

Marks and what they leave out

A country-of-origin stamp generally dates a piece to after 1891, and "Made in" wording is usually later still. A mark that looks sharper and fresher than the object around it deserves suspicion.

The blacklight test

Under ultraviolet light, modern glues, fillers and touch-up paint often glow differently from the original surface, which exposes repairs that are invisible in daylight.

The magnet test

A magnet sticks to iron and steel but not to solid brass, bronze, copper or silver. If a "solid brass" piece grabs the magnet, it is plated.

Weight and feel

Old glass and silver are often heavier than copies, and the base of old pottery is usually unglazed, gritty and stained from decades of sitting on shelves.

05

Where to hunt

Estate sales

The contents of one household, priced to clear. Prices typically drop by a quarter to a half on the last day.

Local auctions

The lowest prices for anyone willing to sit through a sale. Always attend the preview, set your top bid beforehand, and remember the buyer's premium (often 15 to 25 percent) on top of the hammer price.

Antique malls and shops

Higher prices, but the dealer has already sorted out the junk and will usually talk through a piece with you. Asking "what is your best price?" is normal.

Flea markets and thrift stores

The cheapest and the least sorted. Reproductions sit beside the real thing here, so this is where your tests matter most.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Expect to be fooled at least once. Reproductions have been made for well over a century, and everyone's first year includes a mistake. Keep early purchases cheap so the lessons are too.
  • Expect most old things to be worth little. Age alone does not create value. Demand, condition and rarity do, and plenty of genuine 150-year-old objects sell for $20.
  • Expect asking prices to mislead you. Online listings show what sellers hope for. Only sold prices tell you what a piece is worth.
  • Stop buying damaged pieces because they are cheap. Chips, cracks, replaced parts and missing lids cut value sharply and are expensive to fix.
  • Stop cleaning aggressively. Stripping a finish, polishing off patina or scrubbing with harsh chemicals can erase most of a piece's value in an afternoon. Dust it and leave it until you know more.
  • Stop buying a little of everything. A scattered pile is hard to learn from and hard to resell, so stay in your lane for the first year.
  • Stop trusting the story. "It came from an old estate" proves nothing. Buy the object in your hand, not the tale that comes with it.
07

Laws and hazards worth knowing

Ivory

Federal rules heavily restrict selling elephant ivory, and several states ban nearly all ivory sales even for genuine antiques. As a beginner, the simple rule is not to buy it.

Feathers and wildlife

Selling feathers, mounts or eggs from most native North American birds is illegal no matter how old the item is, and eagle feathers are off limits entirely.

Native American and archaeological objects

Items taken from graves, federal land or tribal land are illegal to trade. Buy only with clear paperwork from a specialist dealer, or leave them alone.

Lead

Old paint, pewter, ceramic glazes and leaded crystal can all contain lead. Display them, wash your hands after handling flaking paint, and do not serve or store food and drink in them.

Old wiring

Treat any antique lamp or appliance as unsafe to plug in until it has been rewired.

08

Where to keep learning

The fastest teacher is handling pieces next to someone who knows them, so talk to dealers at shows and go to auction previews even when you are not bidding. Filmed appraisals train your eye for what experts check. A marks dictionary and a sold-price archive answer most "what is this?" questions, and collector forums will look at your photos when you get stuck. Museums with decorative arts galleries show you the best examples of each period, which makes ordinary pieces easier to place.

Why the kit is this small

Nothing below is an antique, because nobody can pick those for you. The kit is the handful of inspection tools that stop expensive mistakes: a loupe is the one thing worth buying before your first purchase, and a blacklight, a magnet and a general reference guide pay for themselves the first time they talk you out of a bad buy. Care and display supplies depend on what you end up collecting, so they sit behind each lane and you can add only the set that matches yours. Budget for the antiques separately, and start small.

10

Pack the picker's bag

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the bag panel. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The loupe, the blacklight, the magnet and the price guide start in the kit. The care and testing lines join when you switch on the lane they belong to, and the conservation wax stays out until you add it.
