Aroid Collecting

Grow, name and trade philodendrons, monsteras and anthuriums, one new leaf at a time.

If you own a pothos or a heartleaf philodendron, you already own an aroid, and a cutting from it is your first trade. Aroid collecting is growing plants from the arum family (philodendrons, monsteras, anthuriums, alocasias and their relatives) for their leaves, and swapping pieces of them with other growers. The draw is watching a plant change as it climbs: a monstera's leaves get bigger and start to split, and a velvet anthurium unrolls each new leaf over a week. Common species cost about what any houseplant does. The four-figure variegated cuttings that make the news are the far end of the hobby and you can ignore them.

What aroid collecting involves

Ten minutes of growing, the rest is the hunt

The growing takes about ten minutes, two or three times a week. You look through the clear pots at the roots, water the plants that have dried out, turn leaves over to check for pests, and tie new growth to its pole. The collecting is the rest: learning to tell one species from another, keeping every plant labeled, and tracking down the next one at a nursery, a plant swap or from another grower online. Many aroids look nothing like their adult form when young. A small plant with plain heart-shaped leaves can be the same species as the split, two-foot leaves in a photo, and getting it from one to the other is the long game.

02

The aroids collectors start with

Philodendron

The largest and most forgiving group. Climbers such as heartleaf, Brasil and micans root from any node. Self-heading types grow from a central crown and need no pole.

Monstera

Grown for the holes and splits in the leaves, called fenestrations. Deliciosa is the big classic with split leaves, and adansonii is a small vine with holes instead.

Anthurium

Collected for velvet leaves with silver veins. They want 60 percent humidity or more and a very airy mix, so buy your first one after a philodendron has done well for you.

Alocasia

Arrow-shaped leaves growing from a corm. They often drop every leaf in winter and regrow in spring, which is dormancy and not death.

Pothos, scindapsus and syngonium

Cheap, fast vines that take average room conditions. They are the usual currency at plant swaps.

What you can grow in your first month

A rooted node cutting

One node and one leaf from a pothos or philodendron grows white roots in water within two to three weeks, and it is your first plant to trade.

A repot into chunky mix

Moving a store plant out of dense peat into bark-heavy mix in a clear pot shows you what healthy roots look like (firm and pale, not brown and soft).

A staked climber

A philodendron or monstera tied to a pole with its aerial roots against the moss starts gripping on its own within a few weeks.

A labeled collection of two

Two plants, each tagged with its full name, where it came from and the date. That habit is what separates a collection from a windowsill of plants.

04

Where collectors branch out

Open one to see where to start. Each can add its own lines to the kit.

Hoya collectingHoyas are not aroids, but they sit on the same shelves and trade at the same swaps. They are slow, waxy-leaved vines grown for foliage and for clusters of scented, star-shaped flowers, and they stay small enough for a windowsill.

Start here

Add the hoya gear to your kit. Pot the plant in the same chunky mix, wind its vines around the trellis, and set it in your brightest window. Let the mix dry all the way through before you water again.

Begonia growingRex and cane begonias give you spots, spirals and metallic color that aroids lack. They like the same bright shade and humidity but rot quickly if they stay wet.

Start here

Add a begonia to your kit and stand it in bright light out of direct sun. Water at the soil line when the top inch is dry, and keep the leaves dry so powdery mildew does not get a start.

American Begonia Society
Plant swappingTrading cuttings is how most collections grow past the first few plants. Local swaps are held at nurseries, libraries and plant club meetings, and a healthy rooted cutting is all you need to bring.

Start here

Add the swap gear to your kit. Cut a piece with one node and one leaf from your healthiest plant, lay the node on damp moss under the dome, and take it to a local swap once the roots are an inch long.

How to buy a plant or cutting

Two hands holding up a small alocasia with dark, deeply veined leaves in a gray pot against a white wall
A young alocasia, checked before buying

Find the node

A cutting needs a node, the knuckle on the stem where leaf and roots emerge. A leaf with only its stalk will sit in water for months and never grow.

Know what is for sale

A rooted cutting has its own roots. A fresh cutting has none yet. A wet stick is a bare piece of stem with a node and no leaf, and it is the riskiest of the three.

Ask for a photo of the exact plant

Stock photos show a mature specimen. Variegation in particular differs on every cutting, and an all-green or all-white one is a poor buy.

Check roots and growth point

Roots should be firm and pale, and the newest leaf should be undamaged.

Check the name

Sellers mislabel plants often, sometimes with made-up names. Look the name up before paying a premium for it.

Watch the weather

Mail-order tropical plants are damaged below about 40 degrees F. In winter, ask the seller to add a heat pack or wait for spring.

06

What trips beginners up

Mostly water, pots and patience

Root rot

Most lost aroids are overwatered in dense soil. In the wild these plants climb trees with their roots in the air, so the mix has to drain in seconds.

Too big a pot

Extra mix around a small root ball stays wet for weeks. Go up one size at a time.

Skipping quarantine

One new plant carrying thrips or spider mites can infest a whole shelf in a month, and plants from swaps are the usual source.

Buying rare first

An expensive cutting teaches you the same lessons as a common one and costs far more to lose.

Expecting splits right away

A young monstera makes plain leaves for a year or more. Fenestrations come with bright light, a pole to climb and time.

Dry air

Brown, crisp leaf edges on anthuriums and alocasias usually mean humidity under 40 percent. Grouping plants together helps, and so does keeping them away from heating vents.

Reading one yellow leaf as a crisis

Aroids shed their oldest leaf now and then. Worry when several yellow at once or the newest leaf comes in damaged.

07

Toxic sap and import rules

Every aroid contains needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals. A chewed leaf causes burning and swelling in the mouth of a cat, dog or child, so keep plants out of reach and pick up fallen leaves. The sap can also irritate skin: wash your hands after taking cuttings and keep it away from your eyes. Buying from overseas sellers has legal weight. Live plants entering the United States need a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country and must meet federal import rules, and a box that arrives without the paperwork can be seized and destroyed. Buy imports only from sellers who include the certificate, and pass on plants described as wild collected, since poaching has stripped some species from their habitats.

08

Where to learn more

The International Aroid Society is the best single source on the family, with pages for each genus and a registry of named cultivars. Use Kew's Plants of the World Online to check any species name before you buy. For hands-on help, look for a local plant swap group or houseplant club, where growers will show you their setups and often send you home with a cutting.

09

Why the kit looks the way it does

Four coir-wrapped climbing poles standing upright at a plant stall, with potted plants out of focus behind them
Coir poles for climbing plants

The first three lines are the hobby: one common plant, a mix that drains fast, and clear pots that let you see the roots and the moisture without digging. The recommended lines are what collectors add in the first couple of months. A pole lets climbers size up, a humidity gauge tells you whether a velvet-leaf plant will cope in your room, and labels, snips and pest spray keep a growing collection named, propagated and clean. The hoya, begonia and swap lines only matter if you take those paths. The shelf light is listed last because a bright window does the job for a first handful of plants.

10

Stock the plant cabinet

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The side-collection lines (Hoya collecting, Begonia growing, Plant swapping) and the optional shelf lights start out of the kit.
