One ball, one hoop, and a game you can join at any park.
Basketball is a game of putting a ball through a hoop ten feet up, and of everything it takes to get an open look at it: dribbling, passing, cutting and defending. The sneakers you already own are enough for a first shootaround, public courts are free, and a ball of your own is the only thing you need to buy. You can practice alone for an hour and get measurably better, then walk onto a court with strangers and be in a game five minutes later. Few sports give you both.

The rules you need for a first game
Six rules cover a pickup game
Scoring
A made basket is 2 points, or 3 from behind the arc. A free throw is 1. Pickup games usually count 1s and 2s instead and play to 11, 15 or 21.
Traveling
You cannot move with the ball without dribbling. Once you pick up your dribble you get two steps, then you must shoot or pass.
Double dribble
You cannot dribble with both hands at once, or dribble again after you have stopped and held the ball.
Fouls
You may not hit, hold or push. Contact on the arm or body of a shooter is a foul. In pickup the player who was fouled calls it and their team keeps the ball.
Out of bounds
The lines are out. The last team to touch the ball loses it.
Half-court games
After a rebound or steal you take the ball back behind the three-point line before you can score. After a made basket the ball changes hands in most parks ("make it, take it" in some).
Pickup at the parkUnorganized games with whoever shows up, usually half-court. Free, and the base kit is all you need.+
Start here
Go to the busiest public court near you on a weekend morning, shoot at a side hoop, and when a game ends ask "who has next?". Call your own fouls and pass a lot: that is all the etiquette you need for a first run.
A hoop at homeA portable hoop on a driveway turns ten spare minutes into shooting practice, which is how most good shooters got their repetitions.+
Start here
Measure a flat spot on your driveway or patio (a free throw is 15 feet from the backboard), then set up a portable hoop and shoot 100 close-range shots a day for two weeks.
Rec leagueScheduled games with a referee, a clock and a team, one night a week. Teams wear matching numbered jerseys, often reversible so one shirt covers home and away.+
Start here
Search your city parks and recreation site for an adult league and register as a free agent. Leagues place solo players on teams that are short a body.
Three-on-threeThe half-court format with its own official rules and tournaments. Faster, more touches, and easier to organize than finding ten players.+
Start here
Grab two friends and play half-court three-on-three to 21, counting baskets as 1 point and long shots as 2. With six players on the floor you touch the ball several times more often than in a full-court game.
Open one for its first step. A hoop at home and a rec league each add their own gear to the gym bag; pickup and three-on-three need nothing beyond the base kit.
Elbow under the ball, ball on the finger pads rather than the palm, and a wrist snap that leaves your hand pointing down at the rim. Get it right up close before adding distance.
Layups with both hands
The highest-percentage shot in the game and the one you will take most in pickup.
Dribbling without looking
Low and beside your body rather than in front, with either hand. If you have to watch the ball you cannot see teammates.
Passing and catching
Chest pass and bounce pass, stepping toward your target, and showing two hands as a target when you want the ball.
Defensive stance
Knees bent, feet wider than shoulders, sliding rather than crossing your feet. Effort on defense gets beginners invited back.

Choosing and inflating your ball
Pebbled cover, deep channels
Size
Size 7 (29.5 inches around) is the standard for men and boys 15 and up. Size 6 (28.5 inches) is the standard for women and girls 12 and up and suits boys 12 to 14. Size 5 (27.5 inches) is for ages 9 to 11.
Cover
Rubber is the cheapest and survives rough asphalt but feels slick and hard. Composite leather grips better and feels softer in the hand. A composite ball labeled indoor/outdoor is the one-ball answer for a beginner.
Avoid indoor-only balls for now.
Genuine leather and soft indoor composites are shredded by concrete within weeks.
Check the channels
Deep, wide seams give your fingers something to find, which makes shooting and catching easier while your hands learn the ball.
Inflation
Most balls print a range near the valve, typically 7 to 9 PSI. Moisten the needle before pushing it in so the valve does not tear.
Before each session, drop the ball from chest height.
It should come back to about your waist. Balls lose air in cold weather, so recheck in winter.

What trips beginners up
Expect it, then fix it
×Expect to miss a lot. A 50 percent day from the free throw line is a good early result, and three-pointers are a month-three project.
×Expect to be winded in minutes. Game basketball is repeated sprints, so fitness comes from playing and catches up within a few weeks.
×Expect your off hand to feel useless. Everyone is one-handed at first, and five minutes a day fixes it faster than anything else.
×Shooting from too far out: heaving the ball from long range builds a pushing motion that is hard to unlearn. Stay where you can reach the rim with good form.
×Practicing only shooting: standing shots are fun, but games are decided by layups, passes and defense.
×Putting off games until you feel ready: pickup players care far more that you pass, hustle and call fouls fairly than whether you score.

Staying healthy
▲Ankle sprains are the most common basketball injury, usually from landing on another foot. Lace shoes snugly to the top eyelet and replace pairs whose soles have worn smooth.
▲Warm up for five minutes with jogging, side shuffles and easy layups before you sprint or jump at full effort.
▲Jammed fingers come from catching the ball on the fingertips. Catch with your fingers spread and pointed up or down, never straight at the pass.
▲Outdoor courts get hot and have no shade. Bring water and take breaks between games in summer.
▲Trim your fingernails. Long nails scratch arms and faces on every reach for the ball.
▲Start with two or three sessions a week. Knees and shins need time to adapt to jumping on hard surfaces.

Where to learn and find games
Parks department first, open gym when it rains
The national governing body publishes free drills and a player development curriculum, and independent coaching sites have written guides for every fundamental. For games, start with your city parks and recreation department: it runs the cheapest leagues and lists every public court. Community centers and gyms post open gym hours, which are indoor pickup sessions that cost a day pass at most and are where to play when the weather turns.
The ball is the only essential, and a good composite one costs less than a restaurant meal. A pump comes next because every ball goes soft, and a flat ball teaches bad dribbling. Court shoes and cushioned socks are recommended rather than required: running shoes get you through the first shootarounds, but their soft, tall soles roll over on the hard side-to-side cuts that games demand. The portable hoop and the reversible jersey sit behind their own add-ons because only a driveway or a league team calls for them.

Fill the gym bag
Compare the options below, then set your tiers and check out from the gym bag. Clicking a card selects it there. The ball, pump, shoes and socks start in the bag. The portable hoop and the reversible jersey join once you switch on their add-on.
Indoor/outdoor composite basketball
essential · Core equipment
It is the one thing you cannot play without, and a composite cover grips well on both park asphalt and gym hardwood.

WILSON NCAA Final Four Edition Indoor/Outdoor Basketball Size 6 + Size 7
Pick the size on the listing: 29.5 inches (size 7) for men and boys 15 and up, 28.5 inches (size 6) for women and ages 12 to 14, 27.5 inches (size 5) for ages 9 to 11. Many balls ship deflated.
Ball pump with inflation needles
recommended · Maintenance
New balls often arrive flat and every ball loses air over a few weeks. A soft ball bounces low and throws off your dribble and your shot.
Franklin Sports Ball Pump + Pressure Gauge with Needle - Perfect Pump Hand Pump for Sports Balls - Air Inflation Pump for Soccer, Basketballs + More, Black
A hand pump is plenty, and a rechargeable electric one just saves the effort. One with a gauge lets you hit the 7 to 9 PSI printed on most balls. Keep the spare needles: they bend and snap.
Basketball shoes
recommended · Footwear
A flat, grippy sole and a firm side wall keep your foot over the shoe when you cut and land, which running shoes are not built to do.
These are unisex listings sized in men's sizes: women usually go down 1.5 sizes. Fit matters more than cut: high-tops are a preference, not ankle insurance. For outdoor courts look for a hard, thick rubber outsole, since soft indoor rubber wears through quickly on asphalt.
Cushioned crew basketball socks
recommended · Apparel
Hard stops and pivots rub the heel and ball of the foot raw in thin cotton socks. A padded, sweat-wicking pair prevents most blisters.

Basketball Crew Socks for Men and Women, Cushion Performance Athletic Basketball Socks
IGL Portable Basketball Hoop, 5.6-10FT Adjustable Basketball Goal System, 40/44 Inch Outdoor Basketball Hoop & Goals for Kids, Youth, and Adults in The Backyard, Driveway with PC Backboard
The base is filled with water or sand (sand is heavier and does not freeze; buy it at a hardware store). Look for height adjustment up to the regulation 10 feet and a backboard at least 44 inches wide so bank shots behave. Needs a flat, paved spot.
Reversible mesh basketball jersey
situational · Apparel · Rec League add-on
League teams must be told apart, and a shirt that flips between a dark and a light side covers both home and away without a second purchase.
Check what your league supplies before buying: some include a team shirt in the fee, and some require numbers. Pick Men's or Women's where a jersey offers both cuts. Sleeveless mesh runs loose, so order your usual size.
