Berry Growing

A sunny strip of yard that pays you back in fruit every summer.

Berry growing means keeping a small patch of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or blueberries and eating what it gives you. These plants are perennials: you plant once, and the same roots crop for years (a strawberry bed for three or four, cane berries for a decade, a blueberry bush for longer than that). The work is light and seasonal. You water, mulch, prune once or twice a year and pick. The reward is fruit ripened on the plant, which is softer and sweeter than anything that has to survive a truck.

01

What a berry patch asks of you

A berry patch needs three things from its site: at least six hours of direct sun, soil that drains within a day of heavy rain, and a water source within hose reach. Berry roots sit in the top foot of soil, so they dry out fast and hate competition from weeds and lawn. Most of the hobby is keeping that top foot damp, covered and weed-free. In summer, plan on an hour or so two or three times a week to water, weed and pick. The bigger jobs come once or twice a year: planting in early spring, pruning in late winter and netting the fruit before it colors.

02

Four berries, four habits

StrawberriesLow plants that spread by runners and fruit soonest. They fit a bed 2 feet wide and the plants are cheap, which makes them the easiest first berry. A bed tires after three or four years and is replanted with new stock.

Start here

Order 25 bare-root plants of a day-neutral variety for early spring and mark out a row 12 feet long in your sunniest spot. Day-neutral types fruit in their first summer.

RaspberriesUpright canes that come up from spreading roots. Each cane lives two years, and the type you buy decides whether it fruits in its first fall or its second summer. They sucker, so give them an edge you can mow along.

Start here

Order five canes of a fall-bearing red variety and plant them 2 feet apart along a fence or bed edge. Fall-bearing types fruit on first-year canes, so you pick in the first autumn.

BlackberriesBigger, heavier-cropping cousins of the raspberry that like warm summers. Modern thornless varieties stand up mostly on their own and are far kinder to pick than wild brambles.

Start here

Pick a thornless, erect variety and plant three of them 3 to 4 feet apart. Each plant can give 10 pounds of fruit or more once it is established, so three is plenty.

BlueberriesWoody bushes that live for decades and turn red in fall. They are the slowest to crop and the fussiest about soil, because they only take up nutrients in acid ground.

Start here

Test your soil pH before you buy anything else. Blueberries need a reading between 4.0 and 5.5, and soil that is not there yet takes months to correct.

Open a card for the first thing to do and a free extension guide for that berry. All four grow with the same kit at the bottom of the page.

03

Planting your first patch

Sun, a soil test, then roots in the ground

What you can get done in your first month

A soil reading

The pH number for your patch, which tells you which berries will grow there without a fight.

A planted row

Bare-root plants in the ground at the right depth, spaced so air can move between them.

A mulched bed

Three inches of straw around every plant, which keeps the shallow roots damp and the fruit off the dirt.

A watering line

A soaker hose snaked down the row, so a week's water is one turn of the tap.

The first pinch

Early flower buds removed from new strawberry plants, so they root in before they fruit.

04

Skills that decide the harvest

Planting depth

A strawberry crown buried too deep rots, and one set too high dries out. The point where leaves meet roots sits exactly at soil level.

Reading canes

Raspberry and blackberry canes are green and unbranched in year one and brown and woody in year two. Canes that have finished fruiting never fruit again and are cut to the ground.

Steady watering

Fruit swells in the two weeks before it ripens. A dry spell in that window gives small, seedy berries, so water at the base and keep the leaves dry.

Mulching

Straw rots down over a year, so top it back up to 3 inches each spring before weeds get started.

Picking ripe

Berries stop sweetening once picked. A ripe raspberry slides off its core, a ripe blackberry turns from glossy to dull, and a blueberry needs about five days after it turns blue.

05

What trips beginners up

Expect a slow start

Blueberries give little for two or three years, and summer-bearing raspberries and blackberries skip their first summer entirely.

Expect to share

Birds find ripe fruit the same morning you do. A patch without netting often gets picked clean.

Expect runners and suckers

Strawberries and raspberries spread, and a tidy row becomes a thicket in two seasons unless you thin it.

Planting grocery-store or hand-me-down plants

Berries carry viruses that cut yields for good. Certified disease-free stock from a nursery costs little more.

Skipping the soil test

Blueberries planted in neutral soil turn yellow and stall, and no amount of fertilizer fixes it.

Overfeeding

Too much nitrogen grows lush leaves, soft fruit and mold. Feed lightly once in spring.

Leaving old canes in

Spent canes crowd the new ones and hold disease over winter. Cut them out as soon as picking ends.

06

The berry year

Four seasons, one or two jobs each

Late winter

Prune while plants are dormant. Cut fall-bearing raspberries to the ground, thin summer-bearing canes and take a few of the oldest stems out of mature blueberry bushes.

Spring

Plant new stock, feed established plants once as growth starts and top up the mulch.

Summer

Water weekly, net before the fruit colors and pick every two or three days. Trim strawberry beds back after their last picking.

Fall

Pick fall raspberries until frost, clear fallen fruit and leaves, and in cold-winter areas cover strawberries with 4 inches of straw once the ground starts to freeze.

Where to learn more

Your state extension service

Every land-grant university publishes free berry guides with variety lists tested in your climate. Search your state's name plus the berry and the word extension.

Master Gardener help desks

Most counties run a free phone or email line where trained volunteers answer questions about a specific plant problem.

Pick-your-own farms

An hour at a local berry farm shows you which varieties do well nearby and what a well-pruned row looks like.

Growers' associations

Cane berry and blueberry groups publish home-garden pages and lists of reputable nurseries.

08

How the kit is put together

Plants first, then what keeps them cropping

The plants are the cheapest part of a berry patch, and one order lasts for years. The essentials are what gets them into the ground and through a first summer: a pH test so you choose the right berry, a spade to clear the strip, pruners and a bale of straw. The recommended lines protect the crop itself: steady water at the roots, a net over the fruit and one light feeding a year. The two optional lines wait until you know you need them. Sulfur is only for soil that tests too sweet for blueberries, and trellis wire is for the second summer, when cane berries are tall enough to lean.

09

Fill the berry flat

The first line, the plants themselves, is not something you buy online, so it has no products under it. For the rest, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the flat list. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out.

Certified disease-free bare-root berry plants

Essential · The plants

The plants are the hobby. Dormant bare-root stock is the cheapest way to buy them and settles in faster than potted plants.

Not sold on Amazon · order from a berry nursery

Not sold on Amazon. Order in winter from a mail-order berry nursery or a local garden center that states its stock is certified virus-free and names the variety. A first order is usually 25 strawberry plants, five raspberry or three blackberry canes, or two blueberry bushes of different varieties so they pollinate each other. Expect $20 to $60.

Soil pH test kit

Essential · Soil

The pH reading decides which berries will thrive in your soil, so it comes before the plant order.

Take soil from 4 to 6 inches down in the spot you plan to plant. A state extension lab test costs about the same and is more precise if you can wait two weeks for it.

Digging spade

Essential · Planting

Clearing sod from the strip and opening planting holes is the hardest work in the hobby, and a flat spade cuts a clean bed edge that keeps lawn out afterwards.

Straw mulch

Essential · Soil

Berry roots sit near the surface and dry out fast. Straw holds water in, smothers weeds and keeps fruit from resting on wet soil.

One compressed bale covers a 12 foot row about 3 inches deep. A bale from a farm store is cheaper if you can carry one home. Ask for straw, not hay, which is full of weed seed.

Soaker hose

Recommended · Watering

It puts water at the roots and keeps leaves and fruit dry, which is the simplest defense against the gray mold that ruins ripe berries.
