Bonsai

Shape a living tree in a shallow pot, one small cut at a time.

Bonsai is growing an ordinary tree in a small pot and shaping it, by pruning and wiring, to look like an old one in miniature. Nothing about the tree is dwarf: a juniper, maple or ficus stays small only because you keep cutting it back and its roots are confined. The work is slow and mostly quiet. You water, watch, and make a few decisions a season, and the tree shows you a year later whether they were good ones. People stay with it because a tree they styled keeps improving for decades.

01

What it involves day to day

Five minutes most days, a few big jobs a year

Most days bonsai takes five minutes: you check the soil with a finger and water if the top half inch is dry. In the growing season you pinch or trim new shoots every few weeks and feed about once a month. The big jobs come a few times a year. You wire and style in fall or late winter, and you repot every two or three years in early spring. A sunny windowsill, balcony or patio bench is enough space for a first tree.

02

Choosing a first tree

Juniper

The classic first tree. It bends easily under wire and forgives heavy pruning, but it lives outdoors all year and dies within months on a windowsill.

Ficus

The right pick if the tree has to live inside. It tolerates dry indoor air and lower light, and it grows back fast after a bad cut.

Chinese elm

Small leaves and fine twigs with little effort. It grows outdoors in most climates and survives indoors by a bright window.

Check the trunk first

Look for a base thicker than your thumb that tapers toward the top. Branches grow in a season. A thicker trunk takes years.

Check the roots and health

Surface roots that spread evenly around the trunk are a bonus. Skip any tree with yellowing foliage, a wobbly trunk or soil that has turned to mud.

Skip seed kits and glued rocks

Seeds take four or five years to become anything you can style. Gift trees with pebbles glued over the soil cannot be watered properly, so pry the pebbles off the day you get one.

Your first month

Tick each one off as you go

What you can finish in your first month

A cleaned-up trunk

Clear the dead twigs, weeds and low shoots from a nursery tree so the trunk line and the surface roots show for the first time.

A first styling

Choose a front, remove the branches that fight it, and shorten the rest into a rough triangle with a clear top.

A wired branch

Wrap one branch at a 45 degree angle and bend it slightly downward, the way an old tree's branches hang.

An accent planting

Pot a small grass or wildflower with a moss top to sit beside the tree.

04

The four skills to practice first

Watering

Water when the soil starts to dry, not on a schedule, and soak the whole pot each time. In summer a small pot can need water twice a day.

Pruning

Cutting a shoot back to two or three leaves forces buds to open closer to the trunk. Repeating that for years builds the dense, twiggy pads of an old tree.

Wiring

Use wire about a third as thick as the branch. If the branch springs back when you let go, the wire is too thin.

Repotting

Every two or three years in early spring, comb out the roots, trim up to a third of them, and replant in fresh granular soil so water keeps draining freely.

05

What trips beginners up

Expect to lose a tree

Almost everyone kills their first one or two, usually by watering wrong. It is the normal cost of learning.

Expect slow progress

You make a few changes and then wait a full season to see the response. Owning several cheap trees gives you more to do.

Expect it to look worse first

A freshly styled tree is sparse and covered in wire. It fills in over the next year or two.

Keeping outdoor trees inside

Junipers, pines and maples need sun and a cold winter. This is the most common way a first tree dies.

Doing everything at once

Heavy pruning, wiring and repotting in the same month can kill a tree. Do one major job per season.

Using garden or potting soil

It stays wet in a shallow pot and rots the roots.

Leaving wire on too long

Fast growers swell around wire in a few months, and the scars stay for years.

07

Where to learn

A local club is the fastest way to improve. Members will look at your actual tree, lend tools at workshops, and often sell or give away starter material that suits your climate. Between meetings, the free guides and forums below cover every technique on this page in more depth. Look up your exact species before each new job, because the right timing differs between a juniper and a ficus.

08

How the kit is put together

The first three lines are enough for your first styling session: a tree, shears and wire. The next group covers a full year of care, including feeding and the first repot. A plain shrub from a garden center, the kind sold for hedges, costs less than a tree labeled as bonsai and usually has a thicker trunk, so use the tree line for a finished-looking start and a nursery for practice material. Avoid boxed tool sets of ten or more pieces. Two or three good tools do everything a beginner needs.

09

Set up the bench

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The Penjing and Kusamono lines and the concave cutter start out of the kit.
