Bug Hotel Building

Build a small wooden shelter and watch wild insects move in.

You can start with what is already lying around: a handful of hollow plant stems, a scrap of untreated wood and some string make a working shelter in an afternoon. A bug hotel is a small, roofed wooden box packed with tunnels and crevices where solitary bees, ladybugs, lacewings and other garden insects nest or spend the winter. Building one is simple woodworking with a living payoff: you cut and screw together a frame, fill it with drilled wood, paper tubes and natural odds and ends, hang it in the morning sun, and then check back to see which tunnels have been sealed with mud or leaf. The guests are gentle, they pollinate your plants and eat aphids, and you get to know the insects in your yard by watching them work.

01

Who actually checks in

Tunnels for nesting, crevices for winter

Most of the roughly 4,000 bee species native to North America live alone, and about three in ten of them nest in ready-made tunnels: old beetle holes in dead wood and hollow plant stems. A female packs a tunnel with pollen, lays an egg, walls it off with mud, leaf or plant fuzz, and repeats until the tunnel is full. Small solitary wasps do the same with paralyzed aphids and caterpillars. The loose, dry rooms of a hotel serve a different crowd: ladybugs, lacewings and other insects looking for a crevice to spend the winter. A tidy modern yard has very little dead wood or standing stems, which is the gap a hotel fills.

02

Your first hotel, step by step

Tick these off as you build

What you can build in your first month

Stem bundle

A tied bunch of hollow stems in a can, which is the quickest shelter there is and a good test of where insects like to nest in your yard.

Drilled nest block

An offcut of untreated wood with rows of small holes drilled into the end, which teaches clean drilling and suits the smallest solitary bees.

Single-room hotel

An open-fronted cedar box with a sloped roof, filled with paper tubes you can pull out and replace.

Winter shelter box

A mesh-fronted box packed loosely with pine cones, bark and dry leaves where ladybugs and lacewings can sit out the cold.

Three-room hotel

A divided frame with tubes, a drilled block and a loose-fill room, built once the single box has taught you the cuts.

03

What makes a hotel insects use

Tunnel width decides the guest

1/8 to 3/16 inch for tiny bees and wasps, 1/4 inch for leafcutter bees, 5/16 inch for mason bees. Skip anything wider than 3/8 inch.

Depth matters as much as width.

Tunnels 1/4 inch or wider should run 5 to 6 inches deep, because shallow ones produce mostly male bees.

Every tunnel is closed at the back and open at the front.

A tube open at both ends stays empty.

Use nesting material you can take out

Paper tubes, reeds and blocks that lift free. Tunnels glued in for good cannot be cleaned and fill up with mites and mold.

Cedar is for the frame.

Drill nest blocks from plain pine, fir or a seasoned log, because scented wood puts nesting bees off.

Small beats grand.

A box the size of a shoebox, or several small ones spread around the yard, attracts fewer parasites than one tall tower.

Keep it dry and still

A roof overhang, a solid back, a slight forward tilt so water runs out, and a mount that does not sway in the wind.

04

What trips beginners up

What to expect

  • Expect a slow start. A hotel hung in fall or winter sits empty until spring, and even a good one may fill only a few tunnels in its first season.
  • Not every guest is a bee. Spiders, earwigs and small wasps move in too, and that is the hotel working, not failing.
  • Some tunnels will be raided by parasitic wasps or pecked open by birds. Losses are normal, and the mesh guard and yearly cleaning keep them low.

Habits to drop

  • Treated lumber, paint, stain or varnish on the inside. The fumes and residue repel or harm the insects, so leave the wood bare.
  • Rough, splintered or shallow holes, usually from a dull bit or drilling too fast. Insects ignore them.
  • Plastic or glass tubes and sealed bamboo that never dries. Trapped moisture grows mold that kills the larvae.
  • Hanging the hotel in deep shade, low in damp plants, or from a wire where it spins.

A year of upkeep

A roofed bug hotel fixed to a tree trunk in a sunny garden
A hotel fixed to a trunk in the sun
Spring
Hang the hotel with fresh tubes before fruit trees bloom, and watch for the first mud or leaf plugs.
Summer
Leave sealed tunnels alone. Pull any tube that is wet, moldy or riddled with pinholes from parasites.
Fall
Once activity stops, move filled tubes and blocks to an unheated shed or garage so birds and winter rain cannot get at them.
Late winter
Set the filled tubes back outside in a box with a single exit hole, so the adults can leave but do not reuse the old tunnels.

Every year, replace paper tubes and reeds. Every two years, swap in a fresh drilled block and scrub the empty frame with a stiff brush.

06

Stings, dust and sharp edges

Solitary bees and wasps have no hive to defend and almost never sting unless squeezed, so a hotel is safe near a patio or a play area. Anyone with a known sting allergy should still let someone else handle full tubes. The real risks are in the build: wear eye protection when drilling, hold the wood down on a bench or step with your knee, never in your free hand, and fold cut mesh edges under, because the wire ends are sharp. Do not cut or sand old painted or pressure-treated wood for a hotel at all.

University extension services publish the most reliable building advice, and it is free. Start with one detailed guide on tunnel sizes and cleaning, then use a photo identification app to put names to your guests. Master Gardener programs and local native plant societies often run spring workshops where you build a hotel with the wood and tools supplied.

08

Why the kit looks like this

Most of the cost is ordinary woodworking tools, and most households already own some of them: skip any line you have. The drill is the biggest price, and a borrowed one does the job. What is specific to bug hotels is small and cheap: bare cedar that shrugs off rain without any finish, bits that cut a clean hole, and paper tubes you can throw away each year. The loose fill (pine cones, bark, dry stems) should come from outdoors for free. If you are building with a child and no tools, the stem bundle and a hand-drilled block cover the hobby for the price of the bits.

09

Stock the workbench

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out, which is the quick way to skip a tool you already own. The field guide starts out of the kit.

Untreated cedar boards

EssentialMaterials

Cedar resists rot with no paint or sealer, so the frame lasts for years outdoors without anything on it that could harm the insects.

About 4 feet of board 4 to 6 inches wide builds a single-room hotel with a roof, so check the total length in the listing: short craft-length packs may take two or three to make one box. A cedar fence picket from a local lumberyard is the cheapest source. Let strongly scented cedar air outdoors for two weeks before hanging the hotel. Untreated pine or fir also works but rots sooner. Never use pressure-treated wood.

Hand saw

EssentialTools

Every part of the frame is a straight cut across a board, and the same saw trims stems and reeds to length.
