What a home cocktail session looks like

You squeeze citrus, measure each ingredient with a jigger, then either shake it hard with ice (anything with juice, cream or egg) or stir it gently (spirit-only drinks like the Old Fashioned or Martini). Ice does half the work: it chills the drink and adds the water that makes it taste smooth rather than hot. Then you strain it into a chilled glass, taste, and note what you would change. Most beginners make one or two drinks an evening, often for a partner or a couple of friends, and get noticeably better within a few weekends.

Your first week behind the counter

Syrup, ice, two bottles and two classic drinks

Tick these off as you go

What you can mix in your first month

Daiquiri

The classic sour of rum, lime and sugar, and the best way to learn shaking and balance.

Old Fashioned

Whiskey, sugar and bitters stirred over a big cube, your first stirred drink.

Whiskey Sour

The Daiquiri template with lemon and whiskey, optionally shaken with egg white for foam.

Gimlet

Gin, lime and simple syrup, proof that one template makes a whole family of drinks.

A house batch of simple syrup

Equal parts sugar and hot water, kept in the fridge for about a month.

03

Skills to practice first

Measuring

Pour to the brim of the jigger every time. Half a quarter ounce of lime changes a drink.

Shaking

Seal the tins, shake hard over your shoulder for 12 to 15 seconds, and stop when the tin is frosty.

Stirring

Spin the bar spoon smoothly around the inside of the glass for 20 to 30 seconds without splashing.

Balancing

Start sours at 2 parts spirit, 3/4 lime, 3/4 syrup, then adjust sour or sweet by a quarter ounce.

Tasting

Dip a straw into the drink before you strain, so you can fix it while it is still in the tin.

04

Choosing a shaker and prepping each session

  • Pick a two-piece tin-on-tin shaker (a large and a small tin). It seals better, chills faster and never shatters like a glass pint.
  • Check that the tins are weighted at the base and seal with a firm tap. A tin set that leaks or sticks shut is the most common beginner frustration.
  • Skip the three-piece shaker with a built-in strainer cap: its holes clog with pulp and the cap often freezes shut.
  • Before each session, squeeze citrus fresh (lime juice tastes flat after a day), refill the syrup jar if it is cloudy, and chill your glasses.
  • Use plenty of fresh, dry ice from the freezer. Ice that has been sitting in a bucket waters drinks down.

Directions to take it

Classic cocktailsSours, Old Fashioneds, Martinis and Negronis. Everyone starts here, and the base kit covers it.

Start here

Make a Daiquiri three nights this week, changing only the syrup by a quarter ounce each time, so you learn what balance tastes like to you.

TikiRum-heavy tropical drinks over crushed ice, built around almond orgeat syrup and big flavors.

Start here

Crush a bag of ice with the mallet and build a Mai Tai with a simpler two-rum split before chasing the full spec.

PUNCH: Mai Tai
MocktailsZero-proof versions of the classics using non-alcoholic spirit alternatives, with the same tools and balance rules.

Start here

Swap the rum in your Daiquiri for a zero-proof rum alternative and add a splash of soda water, then adjust lime and syrup until it tastes finished.

Cocktail SmokingCapping a glass with wood smoke from a torch-lit smoker for stirred whiskey drinks.

Start here

Smoke the glass for one stirred Old Fashioned, then make a second without smoke and taste them side by side to decide how much you actually like.

PUNCH: Old-Fashioned

Classic cocktails are the base kit. Open any other card and add its gear to put it in the kit and the total; you can add as many styles as you like.

What trips beginners up

Lopsided drinks, stuck tins and too many bottles

07

Drinking responsibly and staying safe

  • The legal drinking age in the US is 21. Mocktails use the same tools and skills if you are underage or not drinking.
  • Most classic cocktails hold more than one standard drink. Taste with a straw while practicing and pour the rest into a shared round rather than finishing every test.
  • Never drive after drinking, and keep water on the counter during a session.
  • Raw egg white carries a small salmonella risk. Use pasteurized egg whites if you serve anyone pregnant, very young, elderly or immune-compromised.
  • Cocktail smoking uses an open butane flame: work on a clear, heat-safe surface away from curtains, never leave the torch lit, and smoke in a ventilated room.
  • Never shake carbonated drinks; add soda after shaking or the tins can burst open.
08

Where to learn

Difford's Guide has tested specs for nearly any drink you will hear about, and Kindred Cocktails lets you search by the bottles you already own. For technique on video, The Educated Barfly and How to Drink both run free channels that cover the classics step by step. A good book helps too: the kit below includes one that teaches why drinks work, not just what goes in them.

09

Why the kit looks like this

The essentials are the four tools every shaken drink uses (tins, jigger, strainer and a citrus press), a bar spoon for stirred drinks, and aromatic bitters, which the Old Fashioned and many classics call for. Spirits are not sold on Amazon, so pick up a white rum and a rye or bourbon at a liquor store; they are not counted in the startup cost. Sugar for simple syrup is a pantry staple and any brand works. The recommended tools make fine straining and drinks on the rocks easier, the optional ones help with stirred and muddled drinks later, and the tiki, mocktail and smoking add-ons only matter if you take that direction.

An amber stirred drink strained over one big ice cube with an orange peel on the rim
10

Stock the home bar

Six essentials, then a style if you want one

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the kit list. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The tiki, mocktail and smoking lines stay out of the total until you add that style, and the optional tools start out of the kit.
