Dioramas

Build a whole scene small enough to sit on a shelf.

A first diorama can be made from a shoebox lid, white glue, cardboard and a cup of sifted dirt from the yard. A diorama is a three-dimensional scene in miniature: a patch of ground with its rocks, grass and water, and usually a figure, a vehicle or a building that gives it a story. Unlike a model on a plain stand, the setting is the point. You carve the landform from foam, skin it with filler, paint it in thin earth-colored layers, then glue down grass and scatter until the foam disappears and it reads as a real place. The work is forgiving, most of the materials are cheap, and a scene the size of a paperback is enough to learn every core technique.

01

What building a diorama involves

Five stages, from bare base to finished ground

Every diorama goes through the same five stages. You plan a scene and mark it on a base. You build the landform, usually from stacked insulation foam cut with a knife. You cover the foam with a thin skin of filler and press in sand or grit for texture. You paint the ground dark, then brush lighter earth tones over the raised parts. Last, you add vegetation and details: flock, static grass, tufts, rocks, and the figure or model the scene is about. Each stage takes twenty minutes to an hour of hands-on work, followed by drying time, so a scene comes together over several short sittings instead of one long one.

02

Which kind of scene do you want to build?

Natural LandscapesForest floors, riverbanks, hillsides and coastlines, sometimes with wildlife and often with no figures at all. Pick it if the scenery itself is what you enjoy. It leans on trees and convincing water.

Start here

Pick a photo of a real place you like, a creek bank or a trail bend, and copy one square foot of it. Working from a photo teaches you what ground actually looks like faster than working from memory.

Boulder Creek Railroad
Military ScenesA tank, truck, aircraft or squad of figures set in the place it served, most often at 1/35 or 1/72 scale. Pick it if you already build model kits and want them to tell a story. Mud, dust and rust are the signature effects.

Start here

Take one finished vehicle or figure you already have and build a base only an inch or two bigger than it on each side: a stretch of muddy road, a field edge or a broken wall.

Night Shift
Fantasy and tabletop scenesRuins, dungeons and alien ground built for display or for gaming miniatures, usually at 28mm scale. The base kit covers it completely, since nearly everything is carved foam and paint.

Start here

Carve a short stone wall or a ruined doorway from a foam offcut, press a ball of crumpled foil into it for rock texture, and paint it dark gray with a lighter gray brushed over the top.

Book NooksA lit scene in a narrow box that slides between books on a shelf, such as an alley, a library or a tiny street. Pick it if you want a finished decorative piece and like precise assembly more than freehand terrain.

Start here

Measure the gap on your bookshelf first, then start with a kit. The pre-cut parts teach you how the box, the forced perspective and the lighting go together before you design your own.

Open a card for the first thing to do. Where a scene needs gear of its own, the button on the card adds it to the kit, and you can switch on more than one.

03

Plan the scene before you cut anything

Pick one scale and hold it.

Scale is the ratio between the model and the real thing. At 1/35 a six-foot person stands about two inches tall. Everything in the scene, from door heights to grass length, has to agree with the subject.

Go smaller than you think.

A base that barely fits the subject looks deliberate. A big base leaves empty ground that takes hours to fill and weakens the scene.

Give it one story.

Decide what is happening in a sentence, such as a hiker stopping at a stream, and cut anything that does not serve it.

Set things at an angle.

Roads, walls and vehicles placed parallel to the base edges look stiff. Turn them 10 to 30 degrees.

Build in height.

A slope, a bank or a raised corner gives the eye somewhere to travel. Dead-flat ground is the hardest kind to make interesting.

Dry fit first.

Set the subject and the main shapes on the bare base, look from the angle a viewer will, and trace the positions in pencil.

04

Build your first small scene

Tick these off as you go

What you can build in your first month

A single-figure vignette

One figure or toy on a base the size of a drink coaster, with a rock, a few tufts and painted ground.

A dirt road section

A rutted track with a grass verge, the standard practice piece for texture, washes and drybrushing.

A rocky hillside

Layered foam carved into a slope with exposed stone faces, which teaches carving and the whole paint sequence.

A ruined stone wall

Foam scored into blocks and painted as masonry, with weeds growing along the foot.

A shoebox scene

A boxed view with a painted sky backdrop and everything arranged to be seen from the front.

05

What trips beginners up

Drying time sets the pace.

Glue, spackle and paint each need hours. Rushing a wet layer tears it up, so plan short sittings across several days.

Spray cans melt bare foam.

The solvent in aerosol paint and sealer eats insulation foam on contact. Cover every bit of foam with spackle and brushed paint before any spray goes near it.

Dull blades tear foam and slip.

Change the blade as soon as a cut starts to drag, always cut away from your other hand, and cut on a mat, not the table.

One flat green looks like felt.

Real ground is patchy. Mix two or three shades of grass, leave bare dirt showing, and vary the height.

Clean ground looks fake.

Scatter fine debris, dead leaves and small stones where things meet, and tone everything down with a thin brown wash.

Floating subjects break the illusion.

A vehicle or figure sitting on top of the grass looks placed. Sink wheels and feet a little into the ground texture.

Hot wire cutters and resin need fresh air.

Both give off fumes. Work by an open window and wear gloves when pouring resin water.

06

Where to learn

Build videos and two communities

Diorama building is taught almost entirely by video, and the best channels film each step close up so you can copy the hand movements. Watch one full build from start to finish before you begin, then keep a second one running while you work. The two online communities are worth joining early: posting a work-in-progress photo and asking what looks off gets specific, friendly answers. A local model club or hobby shop will often have a build night where you can see materials in person before buying them.

07

How the kit is put together

The essentials are the materials every scene uses whatever its subject: foam for the landform, a base, a knife, glue, filler, paint, brushes and ground cover. Most of them are bought once and last through many small scenes, so the second diorama costs a fraction of the first. The recommended lines make the work cleaner and the result last longer. The add-on groups hold what only one kind of scene needs, so switch on the one that matches your direction and leave the rest. The kit leaves out the subject itself, because a first scene works best around a figure, toy or model you already have.

Figures give a patch of sand a story
08

Stock the workbench

The foam, base, knife, glue, spackle, paint, brushes and ground cover start on the bench, along with the mat, tufts, tweezers and sealer. Trees and water, weathering pigments, and a book nook kit join when you switch on Natural Landscapes, Military Scenes or Book Nooks, above or from the scene types in the kit. The hot wire cutter stays out until you add it. Compare the options, then set your tiers and check out from the kit. Clicking a card selects it there.

Insulation foam sheets for terrain

essential · Core materials

Dense extruded foam is what hills, banks, rocks and walls are carved from. It cuts cleanly with a knife, weighs almost nothing and takes texture well.
