What collecting dolls involves

Read, compare, record, then buy

Very little of the hobby is buying. An ordinary week is an hour or two of reading sold listings, checking a maker's mark against a reference, dusting a shelf, or logging a new arrival with photos and what you paid. Buying happens in bursts: a show a few times a year, a release date, an estate sale. Collections stay interesting when they have a rule, such as one maker, one decade or one size, because the rule tells you what to pass on. Ball-jointed and artist dolls are a further path, usually ordered direct from the maker at $300 and up, and most collectors reach them after a year or two with something cheaper.

18-Inch DollsLarger vinyl and cloth-bodied dolls with rooted or wigged hair and big wardrobes. They cost $30 to $150 new and take far more shelf space, so collections tend to stay small.

Vintage DollsAnything from 1950s hard plastic back to bisque heads from the 1880s. Prices run from $20 at an estate sale to thousands at auction, and condition is everything, so this path rewards study before spending.

How to judge a doll before you buy

Marks

Most dolls are marked on the back of the neck, the shoulders or the lower back. Read the mark with a loupe and match it to a reference. A date in the mark is usually the mold's copyright year, not the year that doll was made.

Hair

Look for the original set, uncut ends and no missing plugs along the part. Hair that has been cut or restyled cannot be put back.

Face paint

Check lips, brows and cheek blush for rubs. Repainted faces look sharper than the rest of the doll is worn.

Body

Move every joint. On vinyl, look for green stains at the ears from old metal earrings, bite marks on hands and sticky patches. On composition, look for fine cracking in the surface. On bisque, shine a flashlight inside the head to show hairline cracks.

Smell

Smoke and mildew sink into vinyl, cloth and wigs and rarely come out fully. Ask the seller directly when buying online.

Clothing and box

An original tagged outfit can be worth more than the doll wearing it. A never-opened box matters most for fashion dolls and least for antiques.

Display and storage

Keep dolls out of direct sun and away from bright windows. Light fades fabric and face paint, and the damage is permanent.
Aim for a lived-in room: 60 to 75°F and 40 to 55 percent humidity. Attics, garages and basements swing too far for vinyl, glue and old fabric.
Dust with a soft dry brush every few weeks, working from the head down. Water and household cleaners lift paint and loosen wigs.
Store in acid-free tissue inside a lidded box, never in sealed plastic bags, which trap moisture and can react with vinyl.
Take off rubber bands, metal earrings and dark or red clothing before long storage. All three stain or mark vinyl over time.
Set stands to hold the waist loosely. A tight wire clasp dents soft bodies and creases clothing.
Wash and dry your hands before handling. Skin oil and lotion mark matte vinyl and bisque.

What trips beginners up

Expect most dolls to be worth less than you paid. Mass-produced dolls from the 1980s onward were saved in huge numbers, so buy what you like and treat any gain as a bonus.
"Limited edition" on a box says nothing about demand. Look up what that doll has actually sold for.
Buying fast in the first three months fills a shelf with dolls you later sell at a loss. One a month is a good pace while your taste settles.
Do not clean, restring or restyle a doll until you know what it is. A well-meant wash has ruined more value than years of dust.
Online photos hide repairs and odors. Ask for close-ups of the face, hands and marks, and read the return policy first.
Keep receipts and photos from the first doll on. Without records you cannot insure a collection or sell from it sensibly.

The United Federation of Doll Clubs lists local groups across the US. Members bring dolls to meetings, which is the fastest way to handle many types.

Doll shows

Regional shows put dozens of dealers in one room. Admission is usually under $10, and dealers will explain what they are selling if you ask.

Reference sites

How the kit is put together

The base kit is small and cheap on purpose: a dusting brush and acid-free tissue cover care from day one, and a storage box and desiccant packs follow once you own more than you display. The rest depends on the direction you chose. Fashion and 18-inch dolls each have their own doll and stand lines, because stands are sized to the doll. The vintage add-on has no doll in it. Those are bought in person or from dealers, so it holds the tools for identifying and supporting one instead. Put the bulk of your budget into the doll itself.
