Element Collecting

Build a periodic table you can hold, one real sample at a time.

You already own a handful of chemical elements: the aluminum in kitchen foil, the copper in electrical wire, the iron in a nail, the carbon in a pencil. Element collecting is the hunt for a real, pure sample of as many of the 118 elements as you can get, each one labeled and set in its place on the periodic table. About 80 of them can sit safely on a shelf, and the first 20 or 30 cost a few dollars apiece. The appeal is physical. A one-inch cube of tungsten weighs more than half a pound, bismuth grows into rainbow staircases, and gallium melts in a warm hand. Chemistry stops being a wall chart once you have lifted it.

01

What element collectors actually do

Part of it is a scavenger hunt and part is careful shopping. The common elements hide in ordinary objects, so early on you spend more time reading packaging in a hardware store than buying anything. After that, samples come from specialist dealers who sell small pieces of pure metal, sealed glass ampoules of gases and liquids, and crystals. Each sample gets a container, a label and a line in a log. Most collectors keep a checklist of all 118 elements and fill it in by atomic number, and the gaps become the to-do list. A good evening is an hour or two: one new square filled, then some reading on why that element behaves the way it does.

Four ways to build a collection

Found, cubed, crystallized or ready-made

Found SamplesElements pulled from everyday objects and hardware stores. It is the cheapest route and the one that teaches you the most about where elements show up in daily life. The base kit below covers it.

Start here

Search the house, the garage and one hardware store aisle with a photographic periodic table open on your phone. Bag anything that is a single element, then vial and label it the same day.

Metal CubesIdentical 10 mm cubes (about 3/8 inch), one per metal, each stamped with its symbol. Because every cube is the same size, the differences in weight and color are obvious in the hand. Sets cover anywhere from five to several dozen metals.

Start here

Order a small set of common-metal cubes. When they arrive, pick up the lightest cube and then the tungsten one: the same size, several times the weight.

Crystals And NuggetsElements in a form that shows off their structure, such as stair-stepped bismuth crystals and natural copper nuggets. These are the showpieces of most collections and need no special handling.

Start here

Buy one bismuth crystal this week. It is safe to handle, cheap, and shows how different an element can look from the gray lump you expected.

Ready-Made DisplayA clear acrylic periodic table with a small real sample cast into most squares. You skip the hunt and get the whole table on a desk at once. Radioactive and very unstable elements appear as a picture or an empty square.

Start here

Compare two or three displays and read each listing for how many squares hold a real sample. Count that number, not the total number of squares, when you compare prices.

Open a route to see its first step. Metal Cubes, Crystals And Nuggets and Ready-Made Display each end in a button that adds their samples to the kit.

04

What makes a good sample

Purity

Look for a stated figure, usually 99 percent or higher. An alloy is not a sample, which rules out most coins, jewelry and cutlery.

Form

A solid lump, rod, foil or crystal is easier to store and safer to handle than a powder. Many metal powders can catch fire.

Size

A gram or a 10 mm cube is plenty. Price climbs with weight, and a one-inch cube holds about sixteen times the metal of a 10 mm one.

Seal

Elements that tarnish or react in air should arrive in a glass ampoule sealed under argon. Leave the seal intact.

Label

Record the symbol, atomic number, purity, seller and date for every piece. An unlabeled gray metal is nearly impossible to identify later.

Proof

Check a metal by density. Weigh it, divide by its volume and compare the result with the published figure. A 10 mm cube is one cubic centimeter, so its weight in grams is its density.

Magnet test

Iron, cobalt and nickel are the only common elements a magnet picks up. A cube sold as tungsten or titanium that jumps to a magnet is steel.

05

Elements to leave alone

!

Mercury

The liquid gives off toxic vapor at room temperature and a spill is hard to clean out of flooring. Admire it in photos.

!

Lead, cadmium, arsenic, thallium and beryllium

All are poisonous. Lead is acceptable sealed in a vial if you wash your hands after handling it and never file or sand it. Skip the other four.

!

Lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium

These react with water and damp air, some violently. Never open a battery to get lithium. Buy them later, and only as factory-sealed ampoules.

!

Chlorine, bromine and white phosphorus

Corrosive, toxic or able to ignite in air. They are sold only as sealed ampoules by specialist dealers and are not a first-year purchase.

!

Radioactive elements

Uranium ore, old thorium lantern mantles and radium watch dials are collected by experienced hobbyists with a radiation meter and sealed storage. Beginners should wait. Never take apart a smoke detector for its americium.

!

Glass ampoules

Treat them as breakable. Store them padded and upright, and never heat one.

!

Children

Small cubes, vials and magnets are choking hazards. Keep the collection in a closed case.

06

What trips beginners up

  • The price curve is steep. The first thirty elements can be had for about a hundred dollars in total, but gold, platinum, rhodium and several rare earth metals are priced by the gram or the fraction of a gram.
  • A complete table is not possible. Every element past bismuth is radioactive, technetium and promethium have no stable form, and the heaviest elements have only ever existed as a few atoms in a laboratory.
  • Gases are invisible. A vial of air does not show nitrogen or oxygen, so collectors buy gases as sealed ampoules or as small discharge tubes that glow when powered.
  • Counting compounds. Table salt contains sodium and chlorine but is neither one.
  • Trusting the listing. Marketplace sellers sometimes ship plated steel as tungsten or titanium, so test anything that arrives without paperwork.
  • Bare fingers. Skin oils tarnish copper, bismuth and many other metals within weeks.
  • Buying big too early. A larger piece fills the same square on the table and costs many times more.

Where to learn more

  • The Royal Society of Chemistry's periodic table has a free page of data and history for each element.
  • Ptable is a quick interactive table for looking up a density or a melting point while you test a sample.
  • Periodic Videos is a set of short films from University of Nottingham chemists, one per element, showing reactions you should not try at home.
  • The r/elementcollection community on Reddit is where collectors compare samples, displays and dealers.
08

How the kit is put together

The base kit holds no elements at all. It is the storage, labels and reference that every collection needs, because the first samples come out of your own house for free. The samples themselves sit in three add-ons that match the directions above, and you can pick one, all three or none. The pocket scale at the end is for checking purchased metals by density once you start buying them.

Stock the sample shelf

Every line, with its options side by side

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The vials, labels, book, gloves and display case start in the kit. The cubes, the crystals and nuggets, and the ready-made display join when you switch on their add-on, and the pocket scale is there for when you start buying metals.
