Ephemera Collecting

Save the everyday paper that was never meant to last.

You can start with the ticket stubs, menus and receipts already in your drawers. Ephemera is printed paper made for a short working life: tickets, trade cards, billheads, labels, menus, programs, timetables, invitations and handbills. Collectors keep it because it records ordinary life in a way books rarely do: what a meal cost, how a shop advertised, what a train ride looked like on paper. Most pieces cost a few dollars, the hunt happens at flea markets and paper fairs, and the main skills are looking closely and storing paper so it survives another century.

What counts as ephemera

The working definition, from the collector who founded the first ephemera society, is "the minor transient documents of everyday life" (Maurice Rickards, Collecting Printed Ephemera, 1988). In practice that means anything printed or written to do a job and then be thrown away. A typical week in the hobby is an hour digging through a dealer's box, then an evening at a table dating what you bought, reading it, sleeving it and adding a line to your list. Almost nobody collects all of it. People pick a lane (a town, a trade, a kind of object, a decade) and the lane is what turns a pile of old paper into a collection.

Pick a lane

One lane turns a pile into a collection

Your own paper trailFamily letters, report cards, ration books, wedding invitations and ticket stubs from your own life. Free, and the only category where you know the full story.

Start here

Empty one drawer, wallet or family paper box this week. Sort what you find by decade, then write down who it belonged to while someone still remembers.

Advertising and trade cardsSmall color-printed cards that shops handed out from the 1870s to about 1900, plus labels, blotters and billheads. Plentiful and usually a few dollars each.

Start here

At your next flea market or antique mall, ask dealers for their trade card or advertising box and buy five cards from one kind of business, such as thread, patent medicine or stove makers.

Travel and transport paperTimetables, tickets, baggage tags, luggage labels and road maps. Easy to date and easy to organize by route or company.

Start here

Pick one railroad, airline, steamship line or road trip route and search online listings for its timetables, tickets and luggage labels. Buy one dated piece to anchor the set.

Menus, programs and pamphletsMulti-page pieces from restaurants, theaters, fairs and campaigns. They hold the most to read per dollar.

Start here

Choose one city or one venue and look for its menus or theater programs from a single decade. Read each one before filing it: the prices and cast lists are the point.

Broadsides, newspapers and large sheetsSingle-sided notices, auction bills and full newspapers. Striking, but they need flat storage bigger than a binder.

Start here

Browse scanned broadsides online to learn what the formats look like, then buy one inexpensive local newspaper or handbill and store it flat, never rolled or folded.

04

How to judge a piece before you buy it

Date it from the evidence

Look for a printed date, a printer's line, a street address, a phone number format or a price. A five-digit phone number or a two-cent postage rate narrows the decade fast.

Look at the printing under a loupe

Old color lithography shows irregular grain and solid overlapping colors. A regular pattern of tiny dots in four colors means modern process printing, which on a supposed 1880s card means a reproduction.

Check the paper

Old stock is cream to tan and slightly uneven. Bright blue-white paper points to the second half of the 1900s, and a uniform tea-brown color with white fresh-cut edges suggests artificial aging.

Grade condition honestly

Tears into the image, tape, trimming, glue residue and water stains all cut value hard. A clean common piece usually beats a damaged scarce one for a beginner.

Ask what it is before asking what it costs

A dealer who can tell you where a lot came from is giving you provenance for free. Write it down the same day.

Handling and storage

  • Handle paper with clean, dry hands and support it from below with a sheet of card. Gloves make you clumsy with thin paper and are only worth it for photographs.
  • Never use tape, glue, lamination, rubber bands, paper clips or sticky notes. Every one of them leaves a stain or a tear within a few years.
  • Store pieces in sleeves or folders marked acid-free, and avoid soft vinyl (PVC) pages, which smell like a shower curtain and leach onto ink.
  • Keep newsprint apart from everything else. It is acidic and browns whatever touches it.
  • Keep the collection in a lived-in room, in the dark, away from outside walls. Attics, basements and garages swing in heat and humidity and grow mold.
  • Leave repairs and cleaning alone. Flattening a crease under a book is fine. Anything involving water or adhesive is a conservator's job.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Expect most pieces to be worth what you paid or less. This is a hobby of interest, and the few valuable items are found by people who know one lane deeply.
  • Dating takes practice. Your first estimates will be off by decades until you have handled a few hundred pieces.
  • Reproductions are common in advertising, and many were made honestly as decoration decades ago, so they look old too.
  • Buying everything that looks old fills boxes quickly. Set the lane first and pass on anything outside it.
  • Skipping the notes loses the story. A piece with no record of where it came from can never get that back.
  • Peeling items out of old scrapbooks tears them. Keep the page whole unless the piece lifts with no pull at all.
07

Where to find paper and learn more

The best prices are in person: flea markets, antique malls, estate sales, library book sales and used bookstores, where loose paper often sits in a dollar box. Dedicated paper fairs and antiquarian book fairs put dozens of specialist dealers in one room, and most will talk you through a category if you ask. Online auction listings are useful for learning what a piece commonly sells for: filter to sold listings, not asking prices. The two ephemera societies publish free articles, and large library collections put scans online so you can compare your finds against cataloged examples.

08

Why the kit looks like this

The money in this hobby goes to housing, since the paper itself is cheap. Sleeves, a binder and acid-free folders cover almost anything up to letter size and are all a beginner needs. The box, loupe and reference book are worth adding once you have more than a binder's worth or start buying from dealers. The three add-ons match the lanes above: pocket pages for cards and tickets, bags and boards for multi-page pieces, and oversize sleeves for sheets too big for a binder. Add only the one that fits what you actually collect.

09

Fill the document box

Compare the options on each line, then check out from the kit panel. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The sleeves, binder, folders, box, loupe and reference book start in the kit. The housing for Small Pieces, Booklets And Pamphlets and Large Sheets joins when you switch on the add-on it belongs to.
