Try it on, change one thing, look again

A session looks like this: you pull pieces out, try combinations in front of a mirror, change one thing at a time (a tuck, a cuff, a belt, a different shoe) and notice what each change does. You photograph what works so you can find it again. Between sessions you collect references, looking at outfits you like and working out what they have in common. Care is part of it too. A wrinkled shirt or a pilled sweater undoes a good outfit, so steaming and de-pilling are as much a styling skill as choosing colors.

The four ideas that do most of the work

Fit

Shoulder seams sit at the edge of the shoulder, sleeves end at the wrist bone, trousers break once or not at all. Fit is the one thing you cannot style around.

Proportion

An outfit divided in thirds (a shorter top over a longer bottom, or the reverse) reads better than one cut in half. Tucking, cuffing and belting are how you move that dividing line.

Color

Start with one or two neutrals plus one accent. On a color wheel, neighbors look calm together, opposites look bold, and a single color in three shades looks polished.

Texture and weight

Mixing a smooth fabric with a rough one (denim with silk, knit with leather) adds interest without adding color. Heavy fabrics below light ones look grounded.

One focal point

Let one piece lead (a print, a bright color, a statement shoe) and keep the rest quiet.

Expect most outfits you try in a session not to work. Three keepers out of ten attempts is a good hour.
Expect photos to disagree with the mirror. The camera shows proportion more honestly, which is why you take them.

Habits to drop

Do not shop to fix a styling problem. Buying before you know your gaps is how closets fill with single-outfit pieces.
Do not copy a reference outfit piece for piece. Copy the idea (the proportions, the color scheme) using what suits your build and your life.
Do not judge clothes that are wrinkled, pilled or the wrong size. Steam it, shave it or have it hemmed first, then decide.
Do not change five things at once. Swap one element per try so you learn what made the difference.
