Flower Arranging

Turn a grocery-store bunch into something you would pay a florist for.

A clean jar, kitchen scissors and one bunch of grocery-store flowers are enough for a first arrangement. Flower arranging is the craft of cutting, conditioning and placing fresh stems so they look good together and last: loose arrangements in a vase, and bouquets tied in the hand. A session takes about 20 minutes, the result sits on your table for a week, and every new bunch is a fresh attempt. The gear is small and cheap. Most of what you spend goes on the flowers themselves.

01

Your first arrangement, start to finish

Three bunches, one vase, about 20 minutes of placing

What you can arrange in your first month

One-flower vase

A dozen tulips or a single bunch of alstroemeria, cut to one height and nothing else. It teaches stem length and vase fit without any color decisions.

Grocery-bunch rework

One mixed supermarket bouquet taken apart, stripped and rebuilt lower and rounder in your own vase.

Tape-grid arrangement

Three bunches (greens, a filler and a focal flower) placed through a clear tape grid so each stem stays where you put it.

Hand-tied posy

15 to 20 stems spiraled in one hand, tied with twine and cut flat so it stands on its own.

Bud vase row

The short and broken stems from the week, one or two per small vase, lined up down a table or windowsill.

02

The skills that carry every arrangement

Conditioning

A fresh angled cut and a long drink before arranging adds days of vase life. Stems seal over within minutes out of water, so recut any stem that has sat on the counter.

Building a recipe

Think in roles, not flower names. Greenery makes the shape, focal flowers draw the eye, filler connects them, and a tall or trailing stem gives the outline some movement.

Proportion

Aim for an arrangement about one and a half times as tall as the vase. Taller than that and it tips, shorter and the vase looks empty.

Mechanics

Something has to hold stems at an angle. A tape grid does it in a wide vase, a narrow neck does it for free, and crossed greenery stems do it in a jar.

The spiral

For a hand-tied bouquet every stem leans the same way, like the spokes of a twisted fan. It keeps the heads apart and lets the bunch stand up when cut flat.

Limiting color

Two or three colors plus green reads as designed. Five reads as leftovers.

03

Buying flowers and choosing snips

What to check at the bucket and at the blade

At the store

Squeeze a rose where the petals meet the stem. Firm means fresh, soft means it will droop in two days. Pick bunches with buds just showing color, green leaves and stem ends that are not brown or slimy.

Where to buy

Grocery stores and warehouse clubs are fine for learning. Farmers markets sell stems cut that week, and they usually outlast store bunches by several days.

Long-lasting first choices

Chrysanthemums, carnations and alstroemeria last up to two weeks. Tulips, irises and daffodils are done in under one.

Snips

Look for bypass blades (two blades passing like scissors) that cut a pencil-thick stem cleanly, a spring that opens them for you and a lock. Anvil cutters and dull kitchen scissors crush the stem and block water.

Before each session

Wipe the blades with rubbing alcohol and wash the vase and bucket. Bacteria from the last bunch is what clouds the water and shortens the next one's life.

After

Change the water completely every two or three days, add fresh flower food and trim half an inch off the stems.

04

Three ways to arrange

Vase arrangementsStems placed one at a time into a vase, using a tape grid or the vase neck to hold them. The slowest, most forgiving way to learn, because any stem can be moved.

Start here

Buy three bunches this week (one greenery, one filler, one focal flower) and arrange them in a vase 6 to 8 inches tall, following the steps above.

Hand-tied bouquetsStems spiraled in one hand and tied, then dropped into a vase or wrapped as a gift. Faster once learned, and it needs nothing beyond the base kit.

Start here

Lay 15 to 20 stripped stems on the counter, then build the bouquet in one hand: add each stem at the same slant and give the bunch a quarter turn after every two or three. Tie it where your hand was holding it.

Flower Crown MakingShort stems taped in small bunches onto a wire ring sized to the wearer. A crown is out of water, so it is made the same day it is worn.

Start here

Measure paper-covered wire around your head, twist it into a ring, and tape on small bunches of two or three short stems, each bunch covering the stems of the one before.

Instructables: Fresh Flower Crown

Open a card for the first thing to do. The crown card has a button that adds its wire, tape and ribbon to the kit.

05

What trips beginners up

Leaves in the water

Any leaf below the waterline rots within days and takes the flowers with it. Strip more than feels necessary.

Stems cut once and too long

Beginners are afraid to cut, so everything stands tall and stiff at one height. Cut in small steps, hold each stem against the vase first, and vary the heights.

Too many kinds

Six varieties in one vase fight each other. Three kinds, with several stems of each, looks fuller than twelve single stems.

The wrong vase

A wide mouth with no grid lets everything flop to the rim. A vase taller than half the stem length swallows the flowers.

A bad spot

Sun, heat vents and ripening fruit (which gives off ethylene gas) all age flowers fast. A cool room overnight buys extra days.

Expecting florist fullness

A shop arrangement can hold 30 or more stems. Three grocery bunches make a modest, pretty vase, and flowers that open over the week will fill it out.

06

Lilies, cats and sap

Lilies and cats

True lilies and daylilies can cause kidney failure in cats from a nibble of leaf, a lick of pollen or a drink of the vase water. Do not bring them into a home with a cat.

Other pets

Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and chrysanthemums upset the stomach of dogs and cats. Check each flower on a pet poison list and keep vases out of reach.

Daffodil sap

Freshly cut daffodils leak a sap that wilts other flowers. Stand them alone in water for a few hours, then add them without recutting.

Skin

Alstroemeria, tulip and chrysanthemum sap gives some people a rash after repeated handling. Rinse your hands after stripping stems, and wear thin gloves if your fingertips get sore.

Blades

Cut away from the hand holding the stem, and lock the snips shut before they go in a drawer.

07

Where to learn more

Florist-run sites

Free articles and videos from working designers show mechanics and color choices up close, which photos in books cannot.

Flower farm blogs

Growers write about when each flower is cut and how long it lasts, which helps you shop by season.

Garden clubs

Local clubs run design workshops and flower shows where a beginner entry gets written comments from a judge.

A florist workshop

A two-hour class at a local shop includes the flowers and the vase, and you get to watch a professional's hands.

08

Why the kit looks like this

The four essentials are the flowers, snips that cut cleanly, one vase and flower food. Flowers are the running cost: three bunches a session, bought locally. The recommended lines each fix one early frustration: tape so stems stay put, a stripper so cleaning 30 stems takes two minutes, a bucket so flowers drink before you arrange, and twine for bouquets. The crown lines only matter if you want to make crowns. Floral netting and bud vases can wait until the first vase feels easy.

09

Stock the flower bench

The first line is the flowers, which you buy locally and not online. For everything else, compare the options and set your tiers. Clicking a card selects it in the bench list, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The three crown lines stay out until you switch on Flower Crown Making, and the netting and bud vases are for later.

Fresh flowers and greenery

Essential · Flowers

The one thing you buy every session. Three bunches (a greenery, a filler and a focal flower) fill a medium vase.

Not sold on Amazon · buy from a store or market near you

Not sold on Amazon. Buy from a grocery store, warehouse club or farmers market the day you plan to arrange. Expect $4 to $9 a bunch, and pick bunches with buds just starting to open.

Floral snips

Essential · Cutting tools

A clean angled cut is what lets a stem drink. Kitchen scissors crush soft stems and stall on woody ones.
