Fountain Pens

Liquid ink, a steel nib and handwriting you look forward to.

A fountain pen writes with liquid ink that flows down a slit in a metal nib, so it needs almost no pressure: the pen glides where a ballpoint has to be pushed. That makes long writing easier on the hand and gives each line a little character a ballpoint cannot. The hobby is part tool and part ritual. You choose a nib width that suits your handwriting, pick from thousands of ink colors, refill instead of throwing away, and slowly find the pen, ink and paper that make you want to write more. A good starter pen costs less than a paperback and can last for decades.

What using a fountain pen is actually like

Uncap, write, cap

Day to day it is simple: uncap, write, cap. A typical session is a journal page, a letter or the notes you were going to take anyway, ten to twenty minutes at a desk. Every few weeks the pen needs more ink, and every month or two it gets a rinse with water. The hobby part is tuning three things against each other: the nib (how wide and how wet a line it lays down), the ink (color, and how it behaves) and the paper. Some people settle on one pen and use it for years. Others end up with a rotation of pens and a shelf of ink, and both are normal.

02

How to choose a first pen

  • Nib width is the main decision. Fine suits small handwriting and ordinary office paper. Medium is smoother and shows more of the ink color. If you are unsure, pick medium.
  • Japanese nibs run about one size narrower than European ones, so a Japanese medium writes close to a European fine.
  • Every starter pen has a steel nib, and steel writes well. Gold nibs are a later luxury, not something a beginner is missing.
  • Start with a cartridge pen. A cartridge is a sealed tube of ink you push into the pen until it clicks, and the same pen can take bottled ink later.
  • Look at the grip. Some beginner pens have a molded three-sided grip that sets your fingers in place. It helps most people and annoys a few, so choose a round grip if you hold a pen in an unusual way.
  • A snap cap is quicker for notes and a screw cap seals better in a bag. Metal bodies feel solid, while plastic ones are lighter over a long page.
  • Before you buy, check that the listing includes a cartridge and names the nib width. The same pen is usually sold as a separate listing for each width.

04

Filling, cleaning and storing

  • Keep the pen capped whenever you are not writing. An uncapped nib dries in minutes and skips when you come back to it.
  • Store and carry it nib up, so ink settles away from the cap.
  • If the pen has sat for a week and will not start, touch the nib to a damp paper towel to draw the ink through.
  • Flush it every four to eight weeks, and every time you change ink color. Remove the cartridge, run cool water through the grip section until it runs clear, then rest it nib down on a paper towel overnight.
  • Never use hot water, rubbing alcohol or household cleaners. They can warp the feed (the finned part under the nib) and cloud clear plastic.
  • Use only ink labeled for fountain pens. Drawing ink, India ink and dip-pen calligraphy ink contain binders that dry solid inside the feed and can ruin the pen.
  • When you fly, carry the pen either completely full or empty, and keep it nib up during takeoff and landing. A half-full pen is the one that leaks as cabin pressure drops.
05

Why paper matters as much as the pen

Fountain pen ink is mostly water, and absorbent paper drinks it. On cheap copy paper and most bargain notebooks the line feathers (spreads into fuzzy edges) and bleeds through to the back. Paper made for fountain pens is coated or pressed more tightly, so the ink sits on the surface: edges stay crisp, colors look richer and both sides of the page are usable. The trade-off is drying time. Allow 10 to 30 seconds on smooth paper before you close the notebook or drag a hand across the line. That matters most to left-handed writers, who usually do best with a fine nib, a quicker-drying paper and the hand kept below the line of writing.

Where people take it

Open one to see where to start

Bottled ink and colorFilling from a bottle opens up thousands of colors, including inks that shade from light to dark within a single letter, at a fraction of the cost of cartridges. Most people get here within a few months.

Start here

When your first cartridge runs dry, rinse it out, draw ink from a bottle with a blunt-tip syringe and fill the cartridge to just below its neck. Push it back into the pen and you are writing in a new color.

JetPens: How to Refill an Ink Cartridge Using a Syringe
Daily journaling and notesOne reliable pen, one notebook and a page a day. For many people this is the whole hobby, and the base kit is all it takes.

Start here

Leave the pen and notebook where you will see them tonight and write half a page before bed: what happened today, in plain sentences. Do the same tomorrow.

Italic calligraphyA pen with a wide, flat-tipped nib makes thick downstrokes and thin cross-strokes on its own. Italic is the easiest formal script to learn, and it tidies up everyday handwriting too.

Start here

Hold the flat nib at a steady 45-degree angle to the writing line and fill a page with straight downstrokes, then with the letters n and o. Those two shapes carry most of the italic alphabet.

CollectingPens come in endless materials, colors, filling systems and limited editions, and most collections begin as a small rotation of inked pens. Pen shows and local meetups let you try a pen before you buy it.

Start here

Look up the pen show nearest you and put it on your calendar. Most sell a day pass, and vendors expect you to pick pens up and try them.

Fountain Pen Day: Pen Show Schedule
Vintage pensPens from the 1920s through the 1960s are plentiful and often inexpensive, with soft, expressive nibs that are rarely made today. Many need a new ink sac or seals before they will write, so this is a direction to grow into.

Start here

Before buying anything, read how the common vintage filling systems work, so you can tell a pen that needs a five-minute flush from one that needs a new ink sac.

Open a direction to see its first step. Bottled ink, italic calligraphy and collecting each add their own lines to the kit, and you can switch on more than one.

07

What trips beginners up

Habits to drop, and what to expect

  • Pressing down. Ballpoint habits bend nibs and make the pen feel scratchy. If the two halves of the tip spread apart as you write, lighten up.
  • Blaming the pen for the paper. Fuzzy lines and ink showing through the page nearly always trace back to absorbent paper, not a faulty pen.
  • Expect a hard start now and then. A pen left uncapped, or unused for several days, may skip for the first word. That is normal and not a defect.
  • Expect inky fingers for the first few refills. Most ink washes off skin within a day but stains fabric and unsealed wood, so refill over a paper towel.
  • Lending the pen to someone who has never used one. They will press hard, and the nib is the one part that is expensive to fix.
  • Buying five pens in the first month. One pen used every day teaches you what you like in a nib far faster than a drawer of barely used ones.
  • Starting with shimmer or waterproof inks. Glitter particles and permanent pigments clog a pen that is not cleaned often, so begin with an ordinary dye-based ink.
08

Where to learn more

The best teaching in this hobby is free and online. Specialist retailers publish thorough beginner guides and how-to articles. Long-running forums and a very active subreddit answer troubleshooting questions within hours, and review blogs have covered nearly every pen and ink you might be considering. In person, pen shows and local pen meetups are worth a trip, because trying a dozen nibs in an afternoon tells you more than any review.

09

How the kit is put together

The base kit is two things: a pen, and paper that lets it write well. Every pen option ships with its first ink cartridge, so there is nothing else to buy on day one. Cartridges are shaped differently by each pen maker and are not interchangeable, which is why refill cartridges are not a line here. The refill route in this kit is the Bottled Ink add-on, which works with any brand of pen because you refill the cartridge you already have. Turn it on when your first cartridge runs low. The Italic Calligraphy and Pen Storage add-ons belong to those two directions only. Nothing here needs upgrading: a starter pen that is rinsed now and then keeps writing for decades.

10

Fill the pen tray

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the pen tray. Clicking a card selects it there. The pen and the notebook start in the tray. The bottled ink, italic calligraphy and pen storage lines join once you switch on that direction.

Each listing is for one nib width, so check the title names the width you want (medium unless your handwriting is small). The cheapest option is a clear plastic pen that writes far better than its price suggests; the other two add a sturdier body. Refill cartridges are shaped differently by each pen maker, which is why they are not a separate line: the Bottled Ink add-on refills any of these pens.
