Fruit Growing

Pick a lemon or a pineapple off a plant you raised in a pot.

Fruit growing at home means keeping one or two fruiting plants alive long enough to eat from them, and a sunny patio or a south window is enough room to do it. Most beginners start with a young grafted plant in a pot rather than a seed, because a grafted lemon or lime can flower in its first or second year while a seedling takes most of a decade. The work is small and regular: check the soil, water deeply, feed through the warm months, and move the pot when the weather turns. In return you get scented blossoms in the living room in February and fruit that never saw a truck.

01

What fruit growing involves

A fruit plant in a pot needs four things from you: sun, water at the right moment, regular feeding and protection from cold. Sun is the one you cannot fake cheaply, so the hobby starts with finding the brightest spot you own, usually a south or west facing patio, balcony or yard corner. From spring to fall the plant lives there and you check it every few days. Potting, feeding, pruning and pest checks are the longer jobs, an hour or two on a weekend. When frost threatens, the pot either rolls indoors or gets covered, and through winter you water far less. Flowers come first, often within months. Fruit takes longer and ripens slowly: a lemon hangs on the tree for six to nine months before it is ready.

02

Choose what to grow first

Citrus growingDwarf lemons, limes, kumquats and calamondins are the classic first fruit in a pot. They stay under 6 feet, most are self-fertile so one plant is enough, and they put up with a winter indoors by a bright window. Pick this if you live where it freezes and want fruit anyway.

Start here

Buy a grafted dwarf lemon, lime, kumquat or calamondin in a 1 to 3 gallon nursery pot, and before you bring it home pick the spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sun.

University of Maryland Extension: Growing Dwarf Citrus
Tropical fruit growingPineapple, dwarf banana, guava, passion fruit and dragon fruit grow fast in heat and look like nothing else on the block. They stay outside all year in zones 10 and 11. Everywhere else they need a warm, bright place indoors and cover on cold nights, so pick this if you garden in a warm climate or have room to shelter a large plant.

Start here

Twist the leafy top off a grocery store pineapple this week, strip the lowest leaves and plant it 3 inches deep in a pot of fast-draining mix. It costs nothing and teaches you the watering before you spend money on a banana or guava.

Open a card for the first thing to do. Its button adds that fruit's fertilizer and its light or frost gear to the kit at the bottom of the page, and takes the other fruit's gear back out. To grow both, switch both on in the bench list.

03

Your first two weeks

One plant, one pot, the sunniest spot you have

What you can grow in your first month

A repotted tree

Your nursery plant moved into its bigger pot, sitting at the right depth with the graft above the soil.

A watering rhythm

Four weeks of checking the soil before every watering, by which point you know how many days your pot takes to dry.

A first flush

New pale green leaves at the branch tips, the sign that the roots have settled into the fresh mix.

A planted pineapple top

A crown from a grocery store pineapple set in a small pot, where it roots over the next several weeks.

04

How to pick a healthy plant

Buy grafted

Look for a slight bulge or bend a few inches above the soil where the fruiting variety joins the rootstock. Grafted plants fruit years sooner than seedlings and stay a predictable size.

Read the tag

It should name the variety, say dwarf or semi-dwarf, and say self-fertile. A plant that needs a second variety for pollination means buying two.

Check the leaves

Deep green, no sticky residue, no fine webbing and no brown bumps on the stems. Turn a few leaves over, because pests hide underneath.

Check the roots

Thick roots pushing out of the drainage holes or wound in a tight circle mean the plant sat too long in its pot. Pick a younger one.

Skip the plant covered in fruit

A small tree carrying a dozen lemons was pushed hard for the sales bench and often sulks for a year afterward. A leafy plant with a few flower buds settles in faster.

05

Skills to practice early

Watering by feel

Soak the pot until water drains out, then wait until the top 2 inches are dry. In July that can be every other day, in January every two weeks.

Feeding on a schedule

Nutrients wash out of a pot with every watering, so feed from spring through late summer and stop in early fall so soft new growth is not caught by cold.

Moving plants gradually

Leaves grown indoors scorch in full sun. Give a plant a week in shade, then a week of morning sun, each time it changes places.

Hand pollinating

Indoors there are no bees. Brush the center of each open flower with a small dry paintbrush, or flick the blooms, every day or two while the plant flowers.

Light pruning

Cut out dead twigs, crossing branches and any shoot that sprouts below the graft, and leave the rest alone for the first year.

06

What trips beginners up

Expect leaf drop after a move.

A plant carried from patio to living room often sheds a third of its leaves, then regrows them once it adjusts.

Expect most baby fruit to fall.

A young tree sets far more than it can carry and drops the extras at marble size.

Expect a wait.

Even a grafted plant may give only a handful of fruit in its first two years.

Stop watering on a calendar.

Constantly wet mix rots roots, and it kills more potted fruit plants than cold or pests do.

Do not jump to a huge pot.

Extra soil around a small root ball stays soggy, so go up one size at a time, every 2 or 3 years.

Do not trust a bright room.

A spot that looks sunny to you may give a tree a tenth of the light it gets outdoors, which is why indoor plants stall and drop leaves in winter.

Do not ignore sticky leaves.

Scale insects and spider mites multiply fast indoors, and washing the leaves, undersides included, every few weeks keeps them down.

Quarantines and plant shipping rules

Buy citrus locally and never carry it across a quarantine line

Citrus greening is a bacterial disease with no cure, spread by a small insect called the Asian citrus psyllid. It is found throughout Florida and Georgia and in parts of Alabama, California, Louisiana, South Carolina and Texas, and those areas are under quarantine. It is illegal to move citrus plants, cuttings or homegrown fruit out of a quarantined area, including by mail. The practical rules for a beginner: buy citrus only from a licensed nursery, never bring a plant or cuttings home from a trip, and expect online sellers to refuse citrus orders to several states. Hawaii, California and Arizona also restrict other fruit plants at the border, so check your state agriculture department before ordering any live plant from out of state.

09

Why the kit looks like this

A plant, a pot that drains, and a way to move it

The plant is the biggest single cost and the one thing here to buy in person, so it leads the list without a product link. Everything else exists to keep it alive in a pot: a container that drains, a mix that does not stay wet, and a few small tools that take the guessing out of watering and moving. Fertilizer and cold or low-light gear differ by fruit, which is why they sit under the citrus and tropical add-ons instead of the base kit. Skip decorative glazed pots for now. They are heavy, often lack drainage holes and can cost more than the tree.

10

Fill the potting bench

The first line, the plant itself, is not something you buy online, so it has no products under it. For the rest, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the bench list. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The citrus and tropical lines stay out of the kit until you switch that add-on on.

Young grafted fruit plant from a local nursery

Essential · The plant

The plant is the hobby. A grafted one in a 1 to 3 gallon pot is old enough to flower within a year or two and small enough to carry home.

Not sold on Amazon · buy at a local nursery

Not sold on Amazon. Buy in person from a licensed local nursery so you can check leaves and roots, and so the plant is legal to sell in your state. Look for a variety tag that says dwarf and self-fertile. Expect to pay $30 to $80.

Plant pot with drainage holes, about 10 gallon

Essential · Core equipment

A nursery plant needs a pot one size larger within its first season, and it must drain freely or the roots rot.
