Garden Railways

Run big, weatherproof trains through your own backyard.

A garden railway is a model railroad built outdoors, with large-scale trains running on real metal rail through living plants, rock and soil. The trains are big (a locomotive is about a foot long and weighs several pounds) and built to take rain and sun, so the track can stay in the yard all year. Half the hobby is railroading and half is gardening: you grade a route, lay track on crushed stone the way full-size railroads do, then plant ground covers that pass for meadows and trees beside the line. A boxed set runs on a patio the day it arrives, and the railway around it grows a few feet at a time.

Ways to run a garden railway

Four ways in, and most people try the first two in order

Set-out loopThe set's own circle of track laid on a patio, deck or mown lawn for an afternoon, then lifted and stored. No digging, and the right way to spend the first few weeks.

Start here

Clear a flat 5 by 5 foot patch of patio, deck or short grass, snap the set's circle together and run a train this weekend. Lift the track when you are done.

Permanent Garden LineTrack left outdoors all year on a bed of crushed stone, with plants and buildings growing up around it. This is what most people mean by a garden railway.

Start here

Lay a garden hose on the ground in the shape of the route, somewhere you can see from a chair and within reach of an outdoor outlet. When the shape looks right, add the dig-in gear to your kit.

Battery power and radio controlThe locomotive carries its own battery and takes orders from a handheld radio, so dirty rail stops mattering. Most people who switch do it after a season or two on track power.

Start here

Run your first season on track power and note where the train stalls and how often. Then read how the two power methods compare before deciding whether a conversion is worth it.

Live steamSmall locomotives that boil real water over a butane or alcohol flame. They cost more, need your full attention while running, and are best met at a club before you buy one.

Start here

Find a garden railway or live steam club near you and go to a steam-up before buying anything. Owners are usually glad to let a newcomer watch a locomotive being fired.

Open a card for its first step. The permanent line's card also adds the dig-in gear (wider curves, clamps, roadbed, power box, plants and a building) to the wheelbarrow.

02

How to choose a starter set

  • Buy a complete set: a locomotive, two or three cars, a circle of track, and a power pack with a speed controller.
  • Check the rail material first. Solid brass rail can live outdoors for decades. Hollow steel rail, which comes in some lower-priced sets, rusts within a season outside.
  • Look for an outdoor rating on the box. Trains built for the garden use sun-resistant plastic and sealed gearboxes.
  • All of these trains run on the same 45 mm track (about 1.75 inches between the rails) whatever scale is printed on the box, so sets and track from different makers work together. The models range from 1:20 to 1:32, so later additions look best beside trains of a similar scale.
  • Pick a short locomotive with four or six wheels. It handles the tight 4-foot circle in a set, while long locomotives need curves 8 feet across or more.
  • Before every run: walk the line and clear twigs and leaves, wipe the railheads with a cleaning block, and check that no rail joint has pulled apart.

Your first month, step by step

Tick these off as you go

Track held in crushed stone ballast

What you can build in your first month

A set-out patio loop

The starter circle running on a hard surface, which teaches you the controller and the couplers before any digging.

An oval with straights

A box of straight track turns the circle into a route long enough to watch a train travel.

A first dug-in loop

A small oval on a stone roadbed, clamped, ballasted and level, that can stay out through the winter.

A trackside scene

One weatherproof building and a patch of ground cover beside the line, the first corner that looks like a place.

04

Space, power and weather

A starter circle is 4 feet across, so a set-out loop fits on most patios. A permanent line wants a bed of at least 6 by 10 feet, and it should climb no more than 2 to 3 inches over 100 inches of track, because short trains stall on anything steeper. A spade, a board for tamping and a carpenter's level are the only tools the digging takes. In the US, call 811 a few days before you trench so buried utility lines can be marked for free. The rails carry low-voltage current (under 24 volts) that is safe to touch, but the power pack plugs into house current: use a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet and keep the pack dry. Track and buildings can stay out all year. Carry the locomotive and cars indoors after each session, since sun, damp and curious animals are hard on them.

05

What trips beginners up

Expect stalls

Outdoors, rail joints work loose and power fades on the far side of the loop. Clamped joints cure most of it.

Expect the garden to move

Frost, rain and roots shift the roadbed, so a few feet of track need re-leveling each spring. Track that floats on stone makes that a ten-minute job.

Expect it to grow slowly

Track is the big expense, so most lines are extended one box at a time.

Drop the urge to bury the track flush with the soil

Mud washes over the rails in the first storm. Keep the roadbed an inch or two higher than the ground around it.

Drop round pea gravel as ballast

It rolls instead of locking. Only sharp crushed stone holds track in place.

Drop full-size plants near the line

They swallow the track within a season. Choose slow growers with small leaves and keep them a hand's width back from the rails.

Drop the tight S-curve

A curve one way followed straight away by a curve the other way derails long cars. Put at least one straight section between them.

Where to learn more

A magazine archive, two forums and a club near you

The archive of Garden Railways magazine is free to read online and covers every stage from planning to planting. Two forums, one American and one British, are where builders post progress photos and answer beginner questions. A local garden railway club is the fastest teacher of all: most hold open-house tours each summer where you can walk other people's lines and see track power, battery power and live steam running side by side. Search for your city or state plus "garden railway society" to find one.

07

Why the kit looks like this

The starter set is most of the cost and the only thing you need to run trains this week, since it carries its own track and power. Straight track and a cleaning block are the two additions every owner ends up wanting. Everything for digging in sits under Permanent Garden Line, so you can leave it out until you are ready to break ground. Large-scale equipment is built to last and holds its value, which makes used sets and track from club members and estate sales a sound way to save. Check that used track is solid brass and that a used locomotive runs smoothly in both directions.

08

Fill the wheelbarrow

The starter set, a box of straight track and a cleaning block start in the barrow. The seven dig-in lines stay out until you switch on Permanent Garden Line, here, in the kit or from its card above. Compare the options, set your tiers and check out from the kit. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card takes that line out.

essential · Core equipment

One box holds the locomotive, cars, a 4-foot circle of track and the power pack, so a train can run the day it arrives. It costs far less than the same pieces bought one at a time.

All three join to any solid brass set track. The 1-foot sections suit a small oval. The 2-foot sections cover twice the distance per box with half the joints.

Track cleaning block

recommended · Track care

Brass rail tarnishes outdoors, and the film blocks power on its way to the wheels. A few passes with an abrasive block before a run bring back the shine and the electrical contact.

Each box makes a full circle about 5 feet across, enough for the two ends of an oval. If your bed only fits a 4-foot circle, reuse the set's curves and leave this line out.

Brass rail clamps (pack of 10)

situational · Track · Permanent Garden Line add-on

The slide-on joiners fitted to the track loosen and corrode outdoors, and each bad joint starves the rail beyond it of power. A clamp screws the two rail ends together so the joint stays tight and conductive for years.
