Grape Growing

Two vines, two posts and one hard winter pruning a year.

Grape growing is training a woody vine along a wire and cutting most of it off again every winter. A grapevine lives for decades, climbs anything it can reach, and fruits only on shoots that grow from last year's wood, so the whole craft is shaping a permanent trunk and choosing which canes stay. Two vines on a 16-foot trellis take up a strip of sunny yard about 3 feet wide and, once mature, give 20 to 40 pounds of fruit for the table, the freezer or the jelly pot. The work is light and seasonal: a weekend to build and plant, a few minutes a week of tying and watering in summer, and an hour with the pruners each winter.

01

What a year with grapevines looks like

Late winter is the main event. While the vine is bare you cut away around 90 percent of last summer's growth, which feels brutal and is exactly right. In spring the buds you left push shoots that can grow an inch a day, and you tuck or tie them so they hang in an orderly curtain. Flowers open in early summer, small and green and easy to miss. Through the summer you water young vines, pull weeds from under the row, and watch the leaves for mildew and beetles. Berries color up in late summer and are picked in early fall. After harvest the leaves drop and the vine sleeps until you come back with the pruners.

02

Pick a grape that suits your climate

American grapes

Cold-hardy, vigorous and the most forgiving of disease. The fruit is the classic purple juice-and-jelly grape with a skin that slips off the pulp. The safest first vine across the Northeast, Midwest and Northwest.

Seedless table grapes

Mostly American-type hybrids bred for eating fresh. Slightly less hardy than the juice grapes, so check the zone on each variety. Choose these if the goal is a bowl on the kitchen table.

Cold-climate hybrids

Crosses bred to survive winters down to 20 or 30 below zero and still ripen in a short season. The pick for the upper Midwest and northern New England.

European grapes

The grocery-store and classic wine species. They want long, dry, warm summers and mild winters, and in humid regions they are prone to every fungal disease grapes get. Reliable mainly in California and the dry West.

Muscadines

A separate species native to the Southeast that shrugs off heat and humidity. Large, thick-skinned berries in loose clusters. Vines are huge, so plant them 16 to 20 feet apart, and check whether the variety needs a second vine for pollination.

03

From bare yard to planted vines

Posts and wire first, then the vines

What you can get done in your first month

A chosen spot

A strip with at least seven hours of sun and soil that drains within a day of heavy rain, checked with a soil test.

A standing trellis

Two braced end posts with a wire pulled tight at 6 feet, ready years before the vines need its full strength.

Planted vines

Dormant bare-root vines set 8 feet apart, watered in and cut back to two buds each.

A staked shoot

The strongest new shoot on each vine tied to a stake every foot or so, on its way to becoming the trunk.

A fenced-off base

A tube or guard around each young vine, so rabbits and the string trimmer leave it alone.

04

Building a trellis that outlasts the posts

One high wire is enough

A single wire at 6 feet, with the vine's arms running along it and the shoots hanging down, is the simplest system to build and to prune. It suits vigorous American and hybrid grapes.

End posts carry the load

A mature vine in full leaf and fruit weighs a lot and catches wind. Use posts at least 4 inches thick, set them 2 to 3 feet deep, and brace them with a diagonal prop or a ground anchor.

Use heavy galvanized wire

Thin, soft wire stretches every summer and never stops sagging. Twelve-gauge galvanized wire is the minimum for a short row. For rows longer than about 30 feet, step up to 12.5-gauge high-tensile wire from a farm store.

Add a tensioner per wire

An in-line ratchet lets you take up slack each winter after pruning with a quarter turn instead of restapling.

Add a line post for long rows

Past about 20 feet between end posts, put a lighter post in the middle so the wire does not belly under the crop.

A fence or arbor works too

Grapes will cover a sturdy fence or pergola, and the pruning rules are the same. An arbor gives shade and less fruit, because the top is hard to reach.

A bare reddish cane and a dried tendril on a trellis wire in winter, with a person working down the row behind
05

Pruning and training, the two skills that matter

Read the wood, then cut most of it off

Reading the wood

One-year-old canes are smooth and tan or reddish, about as thick as a pencil. Older wood is gray with shaggy bark. Only buds on the one-year-old canes carry fruit, so that is the wood you choose from.

Pruning hard

Each late winter, keep a handful of well-placed pencil-thick canes or short two-bud spurs and remove everything else. A mature American vine ends up with 40 to 60 buds, a European wine vine with 20 to 30.

Keeping the shape

The trunk and the two arms along the wire are permanent. Every cut is about returning the vine to that T shape, so fruit stays within reach and sunlight gets in.

Tying loosely

Use stretchy tape or soft ties in a figure eight, loose enough to slide a finger through. A tight tie strangles a trunk that doubles in thickness over a summer.

Judging ripeness

Grapes color weeks before they sweeten and do not ripen further once picked. Taste from several clusters, check that the seeds have turned brown, and wait for the flavor to lose its sharp edge.

06

What trips beginners up

Expect a three-year wait

There is no fruit to speak of until the third summer, and full production arrives in year four or five.

Expect bleeding

Vines pruned in late winter drip clear sap from the cuts for days. It looks alarming and does no harm.

Expect fungus where summers are humid

Black rot and mildew turn berries into hard black mummies. A disease-tolerant variety, an open canopy and a few well-timed sprays between bud break and a month after bloom prevent most of it.

Expect company at harvest

Birds strip a vine in two or three days once the fruit sweetens. Netting has to go on when the berries first change color.

Stop pruning timidly

Leaving too much wood gives a tangle of shade, many small sour clusters and more disease. The pile on the ground should be bigger than what is left on the wire.

Stop cropping young vines

Pinch off the flower clusters in the first two summers. Fruit on a vine that young steals the growth it needs for roots and trunk.

Stop feeding and spraying carelessly

Rich soil and lawn fertilizer make leaves instead of fruit, and lawn weed killer drifting on a breeze curls and stunts grape leaves from yards away.

07

The first three years on the wire

Year one, the trunk

Grow a single straight shoot up the stake. If it reaches the wire, cut it just above the wire in winter. If it falls short, cut it back to three or four buds and try again; the second attempt grows much faster on an established root.

Year two, the arms

Let two shoots near the top grow in opposite directions along the wire and tie them down. Rub off shoots lower on the trunk.

Year three, the first crop

In late winter, cut each side shoot on the arms back to a two-bud spur, spaced a hand-width apart. Each bud grows a shoot carrying one to three clusters.

Every year after

Repeat the winter cut back to spurs, retighten the wire, and replace a tired arm with a fresh cane when its spurs grow long and crowded.

Where to learn more

State extension guides

Land-grant universities publish free home grape guides with variety lists and spray timing written for your state's climate. Search your state's name plus extension and grapes.

Pruning diagrams

Pruning makes sense in pictures. The two university guides linked here draw the vine before and after the cut for each of the first four years.

Master Gardener help lines

Volunteers answer questions for free and can identify a leaf spot from a photo. Many county offices run a hands-on pruning morning in late winter.

A neighbor's vine

Offering to help prune an established vine in February teaches more in an hour than a season of reading, and the cuttings root easily if you want more plants.

09

Why the kit looks the way it does

Trellis first, then what guards the crop

Most of the money goes into the ground once: posts, wire and the tools to set them. The vines themselves are the cheapest part, and two are plenty for a household. The essentials cover the planting weekend and the first summer of training. The recommended lines are the things that protect a vine and its crop: a guard for the young trunk, a sprayer and fungicide for humid summers, and netting for the weeks before harvest. Loppers and a refractometer earn their place once the vines are mature and cropping.

10

Rig the row

The first two lines, the vines and the posts, are not things you buy online, so they have no products under them. For the rest, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the row list. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out.

Dormant bare-root grapevines

Essential · The vines

The vines are the hobby. One-year-old dormant bare-root plants are the cheapest way to buy them and establish faster than potted ones.

Not sold on Amazon · order from a grape nursery

Not sold on Amazon. Order in winter from a mail-order grape nursery or a local garden center that names the variety and its hardiness zone and sells certified virus-tested stock. Ask for number one grade one-year-old vines. Two vines is a sensible start. Expect $12 to $30 each.

Trellis end posts

Essential · Trellis

Two solid posts hold the wire and the whole weight of the vines for the next few decades.

Not sold on Amazon · buy at a lumber yard or farm store

Not sold on Amazon. Buy two 8-foot pressure-treated posts rated for ground contact from a lumber yard or farm store, at least 4 inches thick, plus a third for a brace or mid-row support if the row is longer than 20 feet. Expect $15 to $35 each.

Galvanized trellis wire

Essential · Trellis

The wire is what the vine actually lives on. Heavy 12-gauge galvanized wire carries the crop of a backyard row and will not rust through.

The options differ in active ingredient: sulfur covers powdery mildew only, copper adds downy mildew and some black rot control, and the systemic concentrate is the strongest against black rot. Check that grapes and the disease you are fighting are both named on the label, and follow its mixing rates and days-before-harvest interval. Sulfur burns the leaves of some American varieties, so read the variety warnings too.
