Two chatty, hay-munching herd animals who learn the sound of your fridge.
Guinea pig keeping is caring for a small herd (two at minimum) of gentle, vocal rodents that live on a big flat floor rather than in a tall cage. They rarely bite, they are awake when you are, and they greet you with a loud squeal called a wheek when they hear a vegetable bag rustle. The work is steady rather than hard: a mountain of hay, a daily plate of fresh vegetables, and a cage that is larger than most pet stores sell. In return you get five to seven years of animals with real personalities who hop in the air when they are happy.
Ten minutes, morning and evening
Mornings and evenings each take about ten minutes: top off the hay, refill the water, hand out vegetables, and pick up the wettest patches of bedding. Guinea pigs nap in short bursts around the clock, so they are up and moving whenever you walk by. Most owners add a stretch of floor time in the evening, with the pigs loose in a pen while you sit with them. Once a week the whole cage gets emptied and wiped down, which takes 20 to 30 minutes. They talk constantly, and you will learn the sounds fast: a wheek for food, a low purr when relaxed, teeth chattering when annoyed.

Floor space is the whole game.
Guinea pigs do not climb, so ramps and upper levels do not count. Humane World for Animals puts the bare minimum at 7.5 square feet (about 30 by 36 inches) and recommends at least 10.5 square feet (30 by 50 inches) for a pair.
Most pet store cages are too small.
Measure the floor before you buy anything. Cages built from wire storage grids around a corrugated plastic tray are the standard way to get enough room cheaply.
Solid floor only.
Wire or mesh floors cause sore, infected feet.
One hideout per guinea pig, each with room to turn around.
As prey animals they need somewhere to bolt, and a single hide starts arguments.
No wheels and no exercise balls.
Their spines do not bend that way, and both cause back injuries.
Watch the heat.
Guinea pigs cannot sweat. Above about 80°F they are at risk of heat stroke, so a sunny window or a hot upstairs room is a bad spot.
Skip cedar and other scented wood shavings.
The oils irritate their airways. Unscented paper bedding or washable fleece liners are the usual choices.
Unlimited grass hay.
Timothy or orchard grass should make up most of what they eat. It keeps the gut moving and grinds down teeth that never stop growing. If the pile runs out, refill it.
A small measure of pellets.
About 1/8 cup per adult per day of plain timothy-based pellets with added vitamin C. Skip mixes with seeds, nuts or colored bits.
About a cup of fresh vegetables per guinea pig per day.
Romaine, green or red leaf lettuce, cilantro and bell pepper are everyday staples. Skip iceberg lettuce.
Vitamin C is not optional.
Like people, guinea pigs cannot make their own, and they need 10 to 50 mg a day depending on age and health. A slice of bell pepper daily plus fresh pellets covers a healthy adult.
Keep pellets fresh. The vitamin C in them fades over time, so buy small bags and check the date. Skip vitamin drops for the water
They break down fast and can put the animals off drinking.
Fruit and carrots are treats.
A small piece a couple of times a week is plenty.
Alfalfa is for the young.
It is too rich in calcium for adults. Use alfalfa hay or pellets only for pups under about six months and for pregnant sows, if your vet agrees.
Check a food before you offer it
Buying one.
A single guinea pig is a lonely one. They are herd animals, and you are not a substitute for another guinea pig.
Trusting the pet store on sex.
Mis-sexed pairs are common, and females can get pregnant from about four weeks old. Have a vet or an experienced rescue check.
Expecting cuddles on day one.
They are prey animals. Plan on a few weeks of running and hiding before they relax around you.
Underestimating the mess.
Two guinea pigs produce a surprising amount of droppings and go through a lot of hay. Daily spot cleaning keeps the smell away.
Housing them with a rabbit.
Rabbits can injure guinea pigs and carry bacteria that make them sick.
Planning around a child.
They live five to seven years, and the daily care lands on an adult.
Forgetting the vet budget.
Exotic vet visits cost more than you expect, so set money aside from the start.
Two long-running owner sites cover almost every question a beginner will have. A local guinea pig rescue is worth finding too: most will trim nails, help with introductions, and board your animals when you travel.
The cage is the one place not to save money by going small, though a grid-and-plastic cage gives you the most floor for the price. Everything after that is modest, and the real cost of guinea pigs is the monthly one: hay, pellets, bedding and vegetables for a pair run roughly $50 to $80 a month. Buying hay in large boxes cuts that noticeably. The animals themselves are not in the kit total. Adoption fees for a pair usually run $40 to $80.

Not sold on Amazon. Look for a shelter or guinea pig rescue with an already bonded same-sex pair, and ask their ages, their current diet, and whether a vet has confirmed their sex. Expect an adoption fee of about $40 to $80 for the pair.
A pair needs a big, flat, solid floor to run on, and most cages sold for guinea pigs fall short of it.
