Houseplants

Turn a bright windowsill into something green that grows a little every week.

Keeping houseplants means growing leafy tropical plants in pots indoors and learning to read what each one wants: how much light, how much water, and when it needs a bigger pot. It starts with a single plant on a windowsill you already have, and the plants forgiving enough to learn on (pothos, snake plant, spider plant) cost about the same as a bunch of cut flowers. The appeal is slow and steady. A new leaf unfurls, a cutting grows roots in a glass of water, and a room that felt bare starts to feel lived in.

01

What keeping houseplants involves

Ten minutes, once a week

Most houseplants come from the floor of tropical forests, which is why they tolerate the dim, warm, steady conditions of a home. Day to day there is very little to do. Once a week you walk around with a watering can, push a finger into the soil of each pot, and water only the ones that have dried out. That check takes 10 to 15 minutes for a dozen plants. A few times a year there is a longer job: repotting a plant that has outgrown its pot, trimming a leggy vine, or wiping dust off big leaves. Growth follows the seasons even indoors. Expect new leaves from spring through early fall and almost nothing in winter, when plants need less water and no fertilizer.

02

Seven ways in

Open one to see where to start. Every direction after the first can add its own lines to the kit.

Easy foliage plantsPothos, snake plant, ZZ plant, spider plant and heartleaf philodendron, grown for their leaves in an ordinary window. This is the default start, and the base kit covers it.

Start here

Stand at your brightest window at midday and check your shadow. A crisp shadow means bright light, a fuzzy one means medium, and almost none means low. Buy one plant that matches, using the picking guide below.

Indoor gardeningGrowing under lights instead of relying on a window. A full-spectrum LED on a timer turns a bookshelf, a basement corner or a north-facing apartment into usable growing space, and it keeps plants growing through winter.

Start here

Pick the shelf, desk or corner where you want plants but the window is too far away. Add the grow light and timer to your kit, hang the light 6 to 12 inches above the leaves, and set the timer for 12 hours a day.

African violet growingCompact, fuzzy-leaved plants that flower in purple, pink and white for most of the year on a windowsill. They want steady moisture from below and dislike water on their leaves, which is why they get their own pots and mix.

Start here

Add the African violet gear to your kit. Set the plant in an east or north window, fill the pot's reservoir so the plant drinks from below, and keep water off the fuzzy leaves.

African Violet Society of America
Air plantsTillandsias take in water through their leaves and need no soil at all, so they can sit in a dish, a shell or a wire holder. Care is a weekly soak and bright light.

Start here

Add the air plants to your kit. When they arrive, soak them in a bowl of room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes, shake them out, and let them dry upside down on a towel before putting them on display.

Bromeliad Society International
Fern growingBoston, bird's nest and maidenhair ferns bring fine, feathery texture. They are the thirstiest group here: soil that never dries out fully and air more humid than most heated homes provide.

Start here

Add the fern gear to your kit and choose a spot out of direct sun and away from heating vents. Run the humidifier nearby and water as soon as the surface of the soil starts to feel dry.

American Fern Society
Plant propagationMaking new plants from pieces of ones you have. Stem cuttings root in water, spider plants send out ready-made babies, and snake plants can be divided. It is how a collection grows without spending money.

Start here

Take three cuttings from a pothos or philodendron, each with at least one node and one leaf. Add the propagation gear to your kit, stand the cut ends in water, and change the water once a week.

Bromeliad growingPineapple relatives with a stiff rosette of leaves and a colored flower spike that lasts three to six months. You water the cup at the center of the plant, and after flowering it produces offsets (called pups) to pot up.

Start here

Add a bromeliad to your kit and put it in bright light out of direct sun. Pour water into the cup formed by the leaves at the center, keep it about a quarter full, and tip it out and refill it every week or two.

Your first month, step by step

Tick each one off as you go

Pothos cuttings rooting in water

What you can grow in your first month

A rooted pothos cutting

A stem in a glass of water grows inch-long white roots in two to three weeks, ready to pot up.

Your first repot

Moving a store-bought plant out of its thin nursery pot into fresh mix and a pot one size up, which teaches you what healthy roots look like.

A new leaf

A pothos, philodendron or spider plant in good light pushes out a fresh leaf within the first few weeks during spring and summer.

A watering rhythm

A month of finger-testing the soil shows you how many days each plant actually takes to dry out in your home.

04

How to pick a healthy plant

Variegated pothos in green ribbed pots on white shelves, with a larger one trailing down from the top shelf
Small pothos plants on a shelf

Match the tag to your light

The care tag lists low, medium or bright light. Believe it. A plant sold as bright-light will slowly decline in a dim corner no matter how well you water it.

Check for new growth

Look for a pale, fresh leaf or a growing tip. It shows the plant is actively growing and has not been sitting in a dark store for months.

Look under the leaves

Turn a few leaves over and check where they join the stem. White fluff, fine webbing or small brown bumps are insects. Leave that plant, and its neighbors, on the shelf.

Lift it and look at the roots

Slide the plant an inch out of its pot. Firm white or tan roots are healthy. Brown, mushy or sour-smelling roots mean it has been kept too wet.

Buy small

A 4 or 6 inch pot costs a fraction of a floor-sized plant, adapts to your home faster, and is a cheaper lesson if it dies.

05

Four skills to practice first

Reading light

Light drops off fast indoors. A spot 6 feet from a window gets a small fraction of what the sill gets, so placement matters more than any product you can buy.

Watering thoroughly, then waiting

A full soak followed by a dry-down grows deeper roots than frequent sips. Learn the weight of each pot when it is freshly watered and when it is dry, and you can check a plant by lifting it.

Repotting

Loosen the outer roots with your fingers, set the plant at the same depth it was growing before, and firm the mix gently without packing it down.

Reading leaves

Yellow lower leaves and wet soil point to overwatering. Crisp brown tips suggest dry air or uneven watering. Long gaps between small, pale leaves mean the plant wants more light.

06

What trips beginners up

Overwatering kills more houseplants than anything else

Roots need air as much as water, and soil that stays wet rots them. Watering on a fixed schedule is the usual cause.

Pots without drainage holes

A decorative pot with no hole turns into a pond at the bottom. Keep the plant in a plain pot with holes and set that inside the pretty one.

Too big a pot

Extra soil holds extra water that the roots cannot use. Go up one size at a time.

Some leaves will die

Older leaves yellow and drop as a plant grows, and most plants sulk for a few weeks after a move. One lost leaf is not an emergency.

Expect pests at some point

Fungus gnats, the tiny flies that hover over damp soil, show up in most collections. Letting the top inch of soil dry between waterings breaks their life cycle.

Buying faster than you learn

Ten new plants at once means ten sets of needs to figure out together. Add one or two at a time.

Winter is slow

Shorter days mean little or no growth. Water less often, skip the fertilizer, and move plants off cold glass and away from heating vents.

07

Plants, pets and small children

Small potted plants and a long trailing vine on wooden wall shelves, above a cabinet holding a metal watering can and a prayer plant
Trailing plants kept up on wall shelves

Several of the easiest houseplants are toxic if chewed. Pothos, philodendron, snake plant, ZZ plant and peace lily contain compounds that irritate the mouth and stomach of cats, dogs and toddlers. If you share your home with any of them, put those plants on a high shelf or in a hanging pot, or start with ones considered non-toxic to pets: spider plant, Boston fern, African violet, air plants and bromeliads. Look up every new plant before it comes home, and call your vet or a poison help line if one gets eaten.

08

Where to learn more

The quickest help with a struggling plant is a photo posted to a large online plant community, where experienced growers will usually name the plant and the problem within hours. For care instructions you can trust, university extension services and botanical gardens publish free fact sheets that are tested rather than repeated from other websites. Local plant shops often run repotting workshops, and plant swaps (search your town's name plus "plant swap") are the cheapest way to meet other growers and widen a collection. The specialist groups, African violets, bromeliads and ferns, each have a national society with beginner pages and local clubs.

09

Why the kit looks the way it does

A repotting table scattered with potting mix: terracotta pots and saucers, a bare root ball, a ball of twine and a pair of black snips
Repotting day: pots, mix and snips

The plants are the smallest cost here and the supplies are bought once. A bag of potting mix repots eight to ten small plants, a bottle of liquid fertilizer lasts a year or more, and plain pots with drainage holes get reused every time a plant moves up a size. The four essential lines are enough to keep a first plant alive and repot it. The recommended lines solve the two most common beginner problems: a moisture meter takes the guessing out of watering, and fertilizer keeps growth going after the nutrients in the original soil run out. Everything under a specialty only matters if you choose that direction, so leave those switched off until you do.

10

Fill the plant shelf

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The specialty lines (Indoor gardening, African violet growing, Air plants, Fern growing, Plant propagation, Bromeliad growing) and the optional sticky traps start out of the kit.
