Japanese Gardening

Compose a quiet corner from stone, evergreens and empty space.

Japanese gardening is arranging a small piece of ground so it reads like a landscape: a few stones set as if they had always been there, clipped evergreens, moss or gravel for the ground, and open space left on purpose. It works in a side yard or a corner the size of a parking space, because the style was developed for courtyards a few steps wide. The building is done in a weekend or two. The hobby is what comes after: an hour of pruning, sweeping and weeding that most people find calming, and a garden that looks better each year as the shrubs take shape and the stones weather.

01

What Japanese gardening involves

There are two phases. Building comes first: choosing a viewpoint, setting stones, planting a few shrubs and laying the ground cover, which is heavy work for a weekend or two. Tending never ends, and it is the part people take the hobby up for. A normal session is an hour or two on your feet and knees: clipping new growth back to the shape you are after, thinning a branch so light reaches the ones below, pulling weeds while they are tiny, and sweeping leaves off moss and gravel. A Japanese garden uses few plants and almost no flowers, so the upkeep is about keeping each one clean, shaped and distinct. Miss a month in summer and it starts to look like an ordinary overgrown bed.

02

Build your first corner

What you can build in your first month

A three-stone group

One tall stone, one low and one flat, each sunk a third into the ground and arranged as an uneven triangle. It is the basic unit of every Japanese garden.

A planted corner

The stone group plus a small maple, two clipped evergreens and a patch of groundcover, composed to be seen from one window.

A short stepping-stone path

Five or six flat stones set level and a comfortable stride apart, leading the eye (and feet) into the corner.

A first cloud-pruned shrub

One nursery azalea or boxwood thinned and clipped into two or three rounded pads. It will look sparse this year and right next year.

A raked gravel bed

A small dry garden with a border, a few stones and your first straight and ripple patterns, if you take the Zen gardening direction.

03

The design ideas that make it look Japanese

Leave more open ground than feels natural

Empty space is part of the design

Open gravel, moss or bare ground makes the stones and plants read clearly. If the garden looks busy, take something out.

Odd numbers, uneven triangles

Stones and shrubs go in groups of three, five or seven, with different heights and unequal gaps. Pairs, rows and symmetry look planted rather than found.

Stones before plants

Rocks are the skeleton and are hard to move later. Place them all, look from the viewpoint for a day or two, and only then plant around them.

Borrowed and hidden views

Frame anything good beyond your fence, such as a neighbor's tree, and screen what is not. A path or stone that disappears behind a shrub makes a small space feel deeper.

A narrow palette

Greens, gray stone, weathered wood and bamboo. One maple for fall color or one azalea for spring is plenty, and painted ornaments work against the style.

One ornament at most

A stone lantern is a focal point when it stands alone beside a path. Two or more turn the garden into a display.

04

Three ways to start

Courtyard cornerThe classic small garden (tsubo-niwa) of stones, a maple, clipped evergreens and groundcover, viewed from indoors. It suits most yards and uses the base kit as it is.

Start here

Pick a spot you see from a window or a seat, about 6 by 8 feet, and photograph it from that viewpoint. Sketch three stones, one small tree and two shrubs onto a print of the photo before you buy anything.

Zen gardeningThe dry garden (karesansui), where raked gravel stands in for water and a few stones for islands or mountains. It needs sun, level ground and almost no watering, and raking fresh patterns is the regular practice.

Start here

Mark a rectangle about 4 by 6 feet on level ground, then visit a stone yard for three or five rocks of one kind. Add the Zen gardening gear to the kit for the gravel, the edging that holds it and the rake that patterns it.

Moss and shade gardenMoss, ferns and stone under trees, where grass will not grow anyway. It costs the least, since the main work is weeding and sweeping until the moss fills in.

Start here

Find the dampest, shadiest part of your yard and look for moss already growing there or nearby. Clear the weeds and fallen leaves off it, keep it swept, and let it spread before buying any.

Open a direction for its first step. The courtyard corner and the moss garden use the base kit as it is. The button under Zen gardening adds the gravel, rake, weed fabric and edging to the kit list, and pressing it again takes them back out.

05

Plants that suit a first garden

Dwarf Japanese maple

The usual centerpiece. Choose a variety that stays under 8 feet, give it afternoon shade in hot climates, and check its hardiness zone before buying.

Clipping evergreens

Boxwood, Japanese holly and evergreen azaleas all take shearing into rounded mounds. Buy them small and bushy. They are cheaper and easier to shape.

A pine, if you want a project

A mugo or Japanese black pine can be trained into the layered look of temple gardens, but it takes yearly hand work and several seasons to show.

Groundcover

Dwarf mondo grass, moss in shade, or creeping thyme in sun. Plant one kind in a broad sweep and avoid a patchwork.

Ferns and hostas for shade

A few clumps at the base of a stone soften it. Three of one kind look calmer than one each of three.

Bamboo, with caution

Running bamboo spreads under fences and is very hard to remove. Use a clumping type, keep it in a container, or get the look from a bamboo screen.

06

Pruning, and choosing the shears that do it

What to check on hand pruners

Bypass blades (two blades passing like scissors) in carbon or high-carbon steel, a grip that fits your hand fully open, and a simple catch you can work with one thumb.

Before each session

Wipe the blades with rubbing alcohol so disease does not travel between plants, and add a drop of oil at the pivot if they feel stiff.

After each session

Clean off sap with a damp rag, dry the blades and wipe on a little household oil. Carbon steel holds an edge well but rusts overnight if put away wet. Touch up the edge with the sharpener when cuts start to tear.

Thin first, then clip

Remove dead, crossing and straight-down branches with the pruners so you can see the structure. Only then shear the outline with the long-bladed shears.

Cut to a side branch or bud

A stub left in the middle of a stem dies back and looks ragged. Cut just above a leaf, bud or fork.

Little and often

Take a third of a plant at most in one year. Two or three light trims a season keep a shrub dense, where one hard cut leaves bare patches.

Timing for flowers

Prune azaleas within a few weeks of flowering, because they set next year's buds in summer. Prune maples in midsummer or late fall, when they do not bleed sap.

07

What trips beginners up

×

It looks bare at first

A new garden has small shrubs and a lot of ground showing. That is correct. Filling the gaps with more plants is the most common way to spoil it.

×

Shaping takes years

A clipped mound takes two or three seasons to become dense, and a trained pine much longer. Buy plants for their branch structure and not their current outline.

×

Upkeep is constant

Weeds show at once against moss and gravel, and leaves need sweeping weekly in fall. Start with a space you can tend in an hour.

×

Stones perched on the surface

A rock sitting on top of the soil looks dropped there. Bury the widest part so it appears to rise out of the ground.

×

Too many ornaments

Lanterns, bridges, statues and bright pots together read as a theme display. Choose one piece, or none.

×

Mixed materials

Three kinds of stone or two colors of gravel fight each other. Use one kind of rock and one ground surface throughout.

×

Moss in the wrong place

Moss needs shade and steady moisture. In full sun it browns by midsummer, so use gravel or a tough groundcover there.

Open raked gravel around a few set stones
08

Digging and lifting safely

Call before you dig

Buried gas, power and cable lines can be only a few inches down. A utility locate is free and usually takes two or three business days.

Move stone with leverage

A rock the size of a basketball weighs about 100 pounds. Roll it, or walk it corner to corner. Lift with your legs, and get help for anything larger.

Protect your eyes and hands

Clipped twigs spring back at face height and stone edges are sharp. Wear any glasses or sunglasses when shearing, and work gloves when handling rock.

09

Where to learn more

The fastest lesson is standing in a real garden. There are a few hundred public Japanese gardens in North America, and many run pruning workshops and volunteer days where staff gardeners teach as you work. Take photos from a single spot and count what is in the frame. For design, a good illustrated book on small Japanese gardens covers stone setting and layout more thoroughly than most videos, and online photo guides to gardens in Japan show how the same ideas work in spaces smaller than a driveway. Local bonsai and Japanese garden societies often welcome garden hobbyists to pine and maple pruning demonstrations.

10

Why the kit looks like this

Most of the money in a Japanese garden goes to things that are better bought near home: stones are priced by weight and cost as much to ship as to buy, and shrubs and maples should be chosen in person for their branch structure. So the kit below is the tending gear, which is what you will hold every week. Three tools do nearly all the work: hand pruners for thinning, long-bladed shears for shaping and a small sickle-style hoe for weeding. The saw, sharpener, broom and book earn their place within the first season. The Zen gardening add-on holds what a dry garden needs on top of that: the gravel, the fabric and edging that keep it clean and contained, and the wide-toothed rake that draws the patterns. Budget tools cut just as well when sharp but need sharpening sooner, so spend on the pruners first if you spend anywhere.

11

Lay out the tools

The first line is the stones and plants, which come from a local yard and nursery and are not something you order online. For the rest, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the kit panel. Clicking a card selects it there. The pruning and cleanup tools and the book start in the kit. The gravel, rake, fabric and edging join when you switch on Zen gardening, and the lantern and bamboo screen start out of it.

Stones and plants from a local stone yard and nursery

Essential · Garden materials

The stones, the small tree and the shrubs are the garden itself, and you need to see and handle them before you buy.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon. Stone yards sell landscape rock by the pound and let you hand-pick: three to five stones of one type run about $40 to $120. At a nursery, look for a dwarf Japanese maple ($40 to $150), two or three small evergreen shrubs ($15 to $30 each) and a flat of groundcover, all rated for your hardiness zone.

Bypass hand pruners

Essential · Pruning tools

Thinning branches one at a time is the main job in a Japanese garden, and these make every one of those cuts.
