Learning Spanish

It is spelled the way it sounds, and half a billion people speak it.

You can start Spanish tonight with a phone and a free lesson. It is the most forgiving major language for an English speaker to begin: five vowel sounds that never change, a spelling system where every word is said the way it is written, and thousands of words (animal, hospital, importante) you can already read. The work that follows is the verbs, which change their endings for who is acting and when. People stay with it because it gets used. Spanish is the everyday language of twenty countries and of more than forty million people in the United States, so a neighbor, a coworker, a taquería counter or a week in Mexico City can all turn into practice.

02

How Spanish works

A Spanish sentence is built around its verb. The ending of the verb says who is doing the action, so the word for I or you is usually left out: hablo is I speak, hablas is you speak, and each tense has its own set of six endings. That is the bulk of the memory work in the first year, and it pays back quickly because the three regular patterns cover most verbs. Every noun is either masculine or feminine, and the words around it (the, a, adjectives) change to match. Adjectives usually come after the noun. Two things have no English equivalent and take time to settle. Spanish has two verbs for to be, one for what something is and one for how or where it is right now. It also has two words for you, a familiar one for friends and family and a formal one for strangers, older people and work.

03

Five vowels and a spelling you can trust

The five vowels

A, e, i, o, u each have one sound (ah, eh, ee, oh, oo), and it never changes or fades the way English vowels do. Getting these short and pure does more for your accent than anything else.

Read it as written

Once you know the letter sounds you can say any Spanish word you see, including ones you have never heard. There are no silent-letter traps beyond the letter h, which is always silent.

Letters that differ from English

J is a throaty h, ll is close to the y in yes, ñ is the ny in canyon, v is said like b, and z is an s in Latin America and a th in most of Spain.

The two r sounds

A single r between vowels is a quick tap of the tongue, like the tt in the American butter. The double rr is a trill. Many learners need months for the trill, and people will understand you long before you have it.

Stress

Words ending in a vowel, n or s are stressed on the second-to-last syllable, and all others on the last. A written accent mark means the word breaks that rule, so the mark tells you exactly where to put the weight.

Speed

Spanish packs more syllables into a second than English, and words run together across the gaps. Understanding it by ear lags behind reading for most of the first year, which is normal.

04

Spain or Latin America?

It matters less than beginners fear. Spanish speakers from Madrid, Mexico City, Bogotá and Buenos Aires understand each other the way Americans, Britons and Australians do, and every beginner course teaches the same core grammar. There are three real differences. Most of Spain says z and soft c as th. Spain uses a separate plural you for groups of friends (vosotros), with its own verb endings, which Latin America does not use at all. And everyday words for food, clothes and transport vary from country to country. Pick the variety you expect to hear most. For most people in the United States that is Latin American Spanish, and Mexican Spanish in particular. Then keep your course, your podcasts and your tutor on that one variety for the first year so you hear a consistent accent.

Where Spanish can take you

Open one to see where to start

Travel SpanishEnough to greet, order, ask the way and deal with a bus station. A few weeks of set phrases changes a trip, and outside the big resort areas of Mexico, Central America, South America and Spain you will need them.

Start here

Learn the dozen things you will say every day of a trip: hello, please, thank you, excuse me, I would like, the check, where is, how much, and do you speak English. Say each one aloud until it comes out without thinking, since a phrase you have to read off a page arrives too late.

DELE PrepThe official Spanish diploma is issued by the Instituto Cervantes for Spain's education ministry, comes in six levels and never expires. The lowest level tests reading, listening, writing and a short spoken interview, and gives a first-year learner a clear target and a date.

Start here

Open the official exam page, read what the lowest level asks for and try a sample listening task with its audio. Mark every question you missed and make those words your first flashcards.

Instituto Cervantes: DELE exams
Reading SpanishShort stories written for learners first, then books with Spanish and English on facing pages. Because the spelling is regular, every word you read is also a word you can say, so reading feeds speaking directly.

Start here

Read one page of a beginner story tonight with a pencil in hand. Underline only the words that stop you from following the plot, look up three of them, then read the page again.

Medical SpanishThe questions, body vocabulary and polite forms that nurses, EMTs, clinic staff and other health workers need with Spanish-speaking patients. It works best as a focused layer on top of a general beginner course, and it does not replace a trained interpreter.

Start here

Write down the five questions you ask most often in your job and learn to say those first, along with the answers you are likely to hear back. Learn the formal form of you for all of them, which is the one used with patients and strangers.

Listening firstHours of slow, clear Spanish made for learners, then podcasts, series and music made for native speakers. This is the route for people who want to understand real conversation and are willing to let speaking come later.

Start here

Watch one beginner-level video spoken entirely in slow Spanish today, with no subtitles, and let the pictures and gestures carry the meaning. Fifteen minutes a day of speech you mostly understand trains your ear faster than an hour you cannot follow.

ConversationRegular talk with a tutor or an exchange partner. Spanish speakers are easy to find in most American cities and online, so a beginner can be having slow, real conversations within a few months.

Start here

Install a free language exchange app this week and send one voice message in Spanish: your name, where you live and that you have just started. Ask your partner to correct one thing.

What trips beginners up

What to expect, and the habits to drop

  • Expect verbs to take most of your effort. A single verb has dozens of forms across its tenses, and the most common verbs are the irregular ones. Learn one tense at a time and use it for weeks before adding the next.
  • Expect the past tense to split in two. Spanish uses one past for finished events and another for background and habits, and choosing between them stays hard well into the second year.
  • Expect a long road, even on the easy list. The US Foreign Service Institute puts Spanish among the fastest languages for English speakers and still budgets about 30 weeks of full-time class to reach working proficiency. At 30 minutes a day, plan on a year or more before conversation feels comfortable.
  • Expect to mix up the two verbs for to be and to guess noun genders wrong for a long time. Neither stops anyone from understanding you.
  • Stop translating word for word from English. Spanish says I have hunger and I have 30 years, and learning whole phrases avoids the errors that single words invite.
  • Stop trusting every look-alike word. Most are real friends, but embarazada means pregnant and not embarrassed, and a few others like it are waiting.
  • Stop studying silently. Reading and tapping answers builds recognition only, and speaking is a separate skill that grows only when you say things out loud, from the first week.

Where to learn and look things up

A structured course

A coursebook with audio or a single well-built app gives the order that scattered videos lack. Free audio courses and podcasts cover the first months well if you would rather not buy anything yet.

A dictionary with examples

Look words up in a learner's dictionary that shows full sentences and conjugations, since one English word often maps to several Spanish ones.

Listening made for learners

Slow, level-sorted videos and podcasts let you hear real sentences at a speed you can follow, months before native media is within reach.

Spaced-repetition flashcards

A free flashcard program shows you each card just before you would forget it, which is the most efficient way to hold on to vocabulary.

People

A weekly session with an online tutor, or a free exchange with a Spanish speaker learning English, is where a beginner starts to talk. Many public libraries and community centers also run free Spanish conversation groups.

About the kit

Nothing here is required. Spanish has more good free material than any other language an English speaker might pick, and you can go months on it. The kit is for when you want one course on paper that takes you from zero in order, and a workbook that makes you write the verb endings until they stick. Those two cover every beginner. The add-ons each serve one goal: a phrasebook for a trip, a prep book for the official exam, graded stories and a facing-page reader for reading, and a pocket guide for health workers. Check any course for how its audio is delivered before you buy, since some still ship discs, and buy the current edition, because older ones can lose their audio downloads.

09

Pack the mochila

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there. The coursebook and the grammar workbook start in the bag. The travel, exam, reading and medical books stay out until you switch them on in section 05 or with the chips in the cart, and the verb reference stays out until you add it.
