What a building session looks like

A boxed set contains numbered bags and a picture-only instruction booklet. You open bag one, find the handful of parts each step calls for, press them on, and turn the page. A 300-piece set takes about an hour; a 2,000-piece display model fills several evenings. Free building works the other way around: you start from a loose pile and an idea, try things, pull them apart, and keep whatever holds together and looks right. Most adult builders end up doing both.

Reading instructions

Each step lists the new parts in a box and outlines where they go. Count studs on the picture to place a part instead of guessing.

Telling look-alikes apart

Dark gray against black, or a 1x6 against a 1x8. The booklet prints long parts at actual size, so hold the piece against the page.

Pressing parts fully home

A brick left half a hair high throws off everything stacked on it. Run a fingernail along each seam.

Overlapping joints

Stack bricks like a bricklayer, each one bridging the gap below, and the model stops falling apart in your hands.

The basic proportions

Three flat plates stack to the height of one brick. Most clever building tricks come from that one ratio.

What trips beginners up

Expect a mistake you only notice ten steps later. Backing up is part of building, and nothing is ever ruined.
Expect sore fingertips after a long session of small parts. Stop at a bag break.
Expect your own designs to look blocky at first. Smooth shapes come from parts and tricks you pick up by building sets.
Opening every bag at once turns a relaxing build into a parts hunt. Go one numbered bag at a time.
Pulling stuck plates apart with teeth or a knife scars the plastic. Use the separator tool packed in most medium and large sets.
Applying stickers freehand leaves them crooked. Hold the sticker on the tip of the separator or a pair of tweezers and line up one edge first.
Small parts are a choking hazard. Keep builds in progress away from children under three and from pets.

How to choose a set

Read the box before you buy

Judge value by price per piece. Around 10 cents a piece is the long-standing rule of thumb; licensed film and game themes run higher.
Read the age mark as difficulty, not audience. An 18+ box means a long, display-focused build, not harder techniques.
Check the finished dimensions on the listing. Photos hide how big, or how small, a model really is.
Start under 500 pieces. A first set you finish in an evening teaches more than a huge one that stalls halfway.
Buy the theme you care about. A subject you love gets finished; a bargain you feel nothing for sits in the box.
Before each session, wash your hands and lay out only the current bag. Skin oil dulls bricks and a crowded table hides parts.
Used bricks sold by the pound are the cheapest way to get loose parts. Wash them in warm soapy water, never hot, and air dry.

Where to learn more

Nearly everything worth knowing is free online. Fan databases track every set and part ever made, and local adult fan clubs welcome beginners at meetups and public shows, which are the best place to see advanced techniques up close and ask how they were done.

About the shopping list

The only thing you need is one set, and a small one costs less than a movie ticket. Sorting trays and a storage case earn their place the moment you take a model apart, because loose parts in a single bin are slow to build from. Everything past that depends on your direction: a larger model for the shelf, loose bricks and baseplates for your own designs, or a geared set to learn mechanisms. Add one direction at a time. Bricks hold their resale value well, so a set you outgrow is rarely money lost.
