Magnet Collecting

Turn the fridge door into a map of everywhere you have been.

You almost certainly own the start of a collection already: the magnets holding takeout menus and school photos to your fridge. Magnet collecting is choosing a theme (places you have visited, one subject such as lighthouses or cats, old advertising pieces) and adding to it one small, cheap piece at a time. Most magnets cost $3 to $10, weigh almost nothing in a suitcase, and go on show the moment you get home, with no shelf or cabinet needed. Collectors sometimes call themselves memomagnetists, and the biggest collections run to tens of thousands of pieces, but fifty magnets with a clear theme already make a display people stop to read.

What magnet collecting involves

Most sessions take a few minutes. You pick up a magnet on a trip, at a museum gift shop, at a flea market or from a business handing them out, then find it a spot at home. The slower, more satisfying part is arranging: grouping by place, color or subject, and rearranging the door or board when a new piece changes the layout. Because each magnet is small and cheap, the hobby rewards having a rule more than having a budget. One magnet per place, or one subject only, keeps the display readable and makes each new piece a small decision instead of a reflex at the checkout.

Ways to build a collection

Travel souvenirsOne magnet for every city, state or country you visit. This is how most collections start, and the display doubles as a record of where you have been.

Start here

Write down every city, state or country you have been to, then check which ones are already on your fridge. On your next trip, buy one magnet near the end of the stay, after you have seen what several shops charge.

Advertising and giveaway magnetsFlat magnets from local businesses, sports schedules, campaigns and events. They cost nothing and quietly date themselves, so a few years of them becomes a small local history.

Start here

This week, ask at three places you already go (a pizza shop, the vet, a hardware store) whether they have a magnet. Date each one on the back in pencil, since businesses change names and phone numbers.

One subjectLighthouses, cats, food miniatures, landmarks, cartoon characters. A single subject turns every gift shop and thrift store into somewhere worth checking.

Start here

Pick one subject you never get tired of and write it as a one-line rule, such as lighthouses only, or food miniatures under 2 inches. Then pull every magnet you own that fits and put them together.

Complete setsSeries with a fixed number of pieces, such as state-shaped magnets that fit together into a map. A checklist gives the hunt an end point.

Start here

Choose a set with a fixed number of pieces, such as one magnet for each of the 50 states, and print or draw a checklist. Mark off what you have and keep the list in your phone for shops and swaps.

Vintage magnetsMolded rubber, plastic and ceramic pieces from the 1970s and 1980s, often fruit, vegetables and kitchen characters. They turn up in thrift stores and estate sales for a dollar or two.

Start here

Go through the housewares bins at two thrift stores and one flea market and look for older rubber, plastic and ceramic magnets. Flip each one over: an older piece usually has a single dark block or disc magnet glued in a molded recess.

Photo And Handmade MagnetsMagnets you make from your own trip photos or small flat keepsakes, for the places and moments no shop sells a magnet for.

Start here

Print three of your own trip photos at wallet size, press each one onto an adhesive magnetic sheet and trim around it with scissors. They fill the gaps for places where you never bought a magnet.

Open a direction to see its first step. The last one can add its magnetic sheets to the kit. The other five use the same kit.

04

How to check a magnet before you buy

Grip

Stick it to the shop rack or any steel surface and tug it sideways. A heavy resin or ceramic piece on one small magnet will creep down a door and fall the first time it slams.

The back

Look for a magnet set into a recess or glued flat across a wide area. A magnet held by a small dot of glue on a smooth back is the first thing to come loose.

Material

Resin shows the most detail but chips at thin points. Glazed ceramic and metal last longest. Soft rubber and flat printed magnets bend, fade and crack sooner.

Paint and print

Check edges, noses and lettering for missing paint, and check that a domed plastic cover has no bubbles or yellowing under it.

Where it is from

The same stock design is often sold with a different place name on it. A piece made or designed locally, or sold by a museum or park, says more about the place.

Price

Tourist-strip shops charge the most. Look in two or three shops, including a grocery store or market, before you buy.

05

Where to display and how to look after them

  • Many stainless steel fridge doors do not hold magnets at all. The sides of the same fridge often do, and a steel board on the wall always will.
  • Keep the display away from the stove and out of direct sun. Cooking grease coats magnets in a sticky film, and sunlight fades printed and painted ones within a couple of years.
  • Lift a magnet straight off instead of sliding it. Grit trapped under a magnet scratches a fridge door or a painted board.
  • Put heavy pieces low and near the hinge side of a door, where the swing is gentlest.
  • Dust with a soft dry brush. Wipe glazed ceramic, glass and metal with a barely damp cloth, and keep water off wood, paper and unsealed paint.
  • Store spares flat in a divided box with a paper towel between layers, so painted faces do not rub and strong magnets do not snap together and chip.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Buying one of everything. Without a rule the door fills up in a year and nothing stands out.
  • Buying at the first shop. The same magnet is often a few dollars cheaper two streets from the main attraction.
  • Packing magnets loose in a suitcase. Wrap each one in a sock or a piece of clothing so fragile parts do not snap.
  • Throwing away a magnet when its back falls off. Regluing takes five minutes and the join never shows.
  • Not writing anything down. In five years you will not remember which trip or which year a magnet came from.
  • Expecting them to gain value. Nearly all souvenir magnets are worth less than you paid, so collect for the memory and the look of the display.
07

Safety around children and pets

Decorative fridge magnets are safe to handle, but the small magnets on their backs are not safe to swallow. Two or more swallowed magnets can pull together through the walls of the intestines and cause serious injury, and the small silver-colored high-strength kind is the most dangerous. Keep the display above the reach of toddlers and pets, throw away or reglue a loose back magnet the day you notice it, and store spare magnets in a closed container. If a child may have swallowed a magnet, go to an emergency room right away. People with a pacemaker or other implanted device should ask their doctor before handling high-strength magnets.

08

Where to learn more

There is no price guide or grading system to study, which is part of the appeal. An encyclopedia article on refrigerator magnets covers how they are made and how the hobby began, and the world record entry shows how far one person took it. Day to day, most collectors learn from each other in social media groups and online forums for fridge magnet collectors, where people post displays, identify older pieces and arrange swaps by mail. Swapping is worth trying early: a duplicate from your town is something a collector elsewhere cannot buy.

09

Why the kit looks like this

The first line is the magnets themselves, which you find in person or are given. The steel board gives the collection a home away from kitchen heat and grease, and it is the only way to display at all if your fridge door is not magnetic. The brush is for dusting raised and painted pieces without scratching them, and the magnetic sheets only matter if you want to make photo magnets. The adhesive, the replacement disc magnets and the divided box can wait until a back magnet comes unglued, a weak one needs swapping or the spares outgrow a drawer.

Stock the fridge door

The first line is your first magnets, which you find in person and do not buy online. For the rest, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there. The display board and the brush start in the kit. The magnetic sheets join when you switch on the photo and handmade add-on, and the adhesive, disc magnets and storage box are there for later.

Essential · The collection

A collection starts with pieces that mean something to you, and those come from places you have been or people you know. Choosing them in person also lets you test the grip and check the back.

Recommended · Display

A steel board on the wall gets the collection away from stove grease and door slams, and it works when the fridge door is stainless steel that magnets will not stick to.

A board about 12 by 17 inches holds roughly 25 to 35 souvenir magnets. Check that the listing says steel or iron: aluminum looks the same and holds nothing. Panels sold in pairs can hang side by side as the collection grows.

Soft dusting brush

Recommended · Care

Raised resin and painted magnets collect dust in every groove, and a cloth snags on thin parts. A soft brush clears them without lifting paint.
