02

How to read a mask before you buy

Turn it over first.

A mask that was worn shows darkened, smoothed wood where the forehead, nose and cheeks touched, and nothing where they did not.

Check the holes.

Cord holes on a danced mask are worn oval and polished on the pulling side. Crisp round drill holes mean it never held a strap for long.

Look through the eye holes.

A dancer has to see. Eye openings too small or misplaced to see through point to a piece carved for a wall.

Compare front and back aging.

Dirt rubbed evenly into every recess, a uniform dark stain, or a back that smells of shoe polish or smoke is aging applied in a workshop.

Read the paint in layers.

Masks in use get repainted before festivals, so old ones often show earlier colors at the chips. One thin coat over bare wood is usually recent.

Feel the weight.

Dance masks are carved thin and light because someone wore them for hours. A heavy, thick-walled mask was made to sit still.

Ask what it is.

Decorative, made for dance, and danced are three different things at three different prices, and an honest seller will say which without being pushed.

03

Directions you can take it

Six traditions people start in

Mexican dance masksCarved and painted wood from village festivals, with tigers, devils, old men and Moors. Decorative examples are cheap, and worn ones with a known town are still affordable.

Start here

Browse the Mexico pages of an online mask museum, pick one dance (the tiger, the devil, the old man) and look for a single worn example of that character from a dealer who names the town it came from.

Second Face: Museum of Cultural Masks
African masksThe deepest field and the one with the most fakes. Most of what is on the market was carved for sale, which is fine at decorative prices and a problem at danced prices.

Start here

Pick one people or region rather than a whole continent, read its chapter in a reference book, then buy an honest decorative carving sold as decorative before you spend real money on a piece claimed to be danced.

Venetian carnival masksPapier-mache, hand-painted, made in workshops that are still open. The easiest tradition to buy new and genuine.

Start here

Buy one hand-painted papier-mache mask from a workshop that signs or stamps the inside, and learn the traditional character shapes (the long-nosed doctor, the white full-face ghost) so you can spot plastic copies.

Japanese theater and festival masksCarved, lacquered wood with fixed character types. Festival masks from shrine dances are the affordable way in.

Start here

Learn to tell the three main families apart (slow court theater, comic interludes, shrine festival dances), then look for a signed festival mask, which costs far less than a stage-quality theater mask.

Latex Halloween and monster masksStudio-made masks from the 1960s onward, collected by maker and year. Condition is everything because latex breaks down.

Start here

Choose one studio or one decade to chase, check the stamp inside the neck, and squeeze the latex gently before buying: if it crackles or feels sticky, it is already rotting.

Wrestling masksStitched fabric and vinyl, from souvenir-stand copies up to masks worn in the ring and signed.

Start here

Decide whether you want wearable replicas or ring-worn masks. Start with one professional-grade replica that has lacing up the back, and set it on a head form so it keeps its shape.

Open a direction to see its first step. Each one ends in a button that adds the right display gear to the kit: stands and wall hooks for carved and rigid masks, head forms for latex and fabric ones.

04

How will you display them?

Picking one adds its display gear to the kit and takes the other kind out. Pick it again to remove it.

  • Either way, pick a wall that never gets direct sun. Sunlight fades pigment in a season and turns latex brittle.
  • Keep the room between about 40 and 55 percent humidity. Wood cracks when it dries fast, and mold starts above 65 percent.
  • Leave a hand's width between masks so you can lift one down without knocking its neighbor.
05

What you should not buy

  • Native American ceremonial masks. Many are sacred objects that tribes have asked not to be sold or displayed, and trading in items taken from tribal or federal land is a federal crime. Leave them alone.
  • Anything sold as Native American made that is not. Federal law makes that misrepresentation illegal, so buy contemporary Native work directly from the artist or a gallery that names them.
  • Masks trimmed with feathers of wild native birds, ivory, sea turtle shell or the hide of a protected animal. Owning or shipping these can be illegal no matter how old the mask is. Ask what every material is.
  • Old pieces with no export paperwork from countries that restrict the export of cultural property. Ask the seller how and when the mask left its country, and walk away from a vague answer.
  • Keep every receipt and every note about where a mask came from. That paper trail is what lets you sell, insure or donate it later.
06

What trips beginners up

  • Expect most masks you see for sale to be made for sale. Truly used old masks are a small share of the market, and learning to tell them apart takes handling a lot of examples.
  • Expect no price guide. The same mask can be $40 at a flea market and $400 at a gallery, so sold auction results are your only real reference.
  • Expect slow growth. A good collection adds a handful of pieces a year.
  • Drop the habit of buying one of everything. Ten masks from one tradition teach you more than ten from ten countries.
  • Do not oil, wax, polish or wash a mask. Cleaning removes the wear and surface that give it value. Dust with a dry soft brush and stop there.
  • Do not trust a story without evidence. Age claims, tribe names and tales of a ceremony mean nothing unless the object itself agrees.
  • Watch for fine powder under a wooden mask. It means wood-boring insects are active. Seal the mask in a bag and keep it away from the others until it has been treated.
07

Where to learn

Your eye improves fastest by comparing a lot of masks, and the best comparisons are free. Online mask museums and major museum collection databases show hundreds of documented examples with country, character and date. Folk art museums let you see scale and surface in person, which photos hide. Auction houses that run tribal and folk art sales publish their sold results, and reading those catalogs is the closest thing this hobby has to a price guide. Collector sites and forums will often look at photos of a mask and tell you what they think it is.

08

Why the list looks like this

Almost all of your money should go into masks, so the kit is small. The mask itself is not on the list as a product because good ones come from dealers, auctions, markets and makers. A reference book is the one essential, since it is cheaper than a single mistake. The recommended items are about looking closely and not causing damage: a loupe, a soft brush, gloves, tissue and a humidity gauge. Display gear depends on what you collect, so choose your type in the kit and it adds either stands and wall hooks or head forms. The ultraviolet light and storage boxes can wait until you own more masks than wall.

A shop wall crowded with Venetian carnival masks: long-nosed doctors, jesters and feathered faces
09

Outfit the mask wall

Every line, with three options each

The first line, the mask itself, is not something you buy online, so it carries advice and no products. For the rest, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there. The book and the care items start in the kit. Stands and wall hooks join when you pick Wood and Rigid Masks, head forms and stuffing when you pick Latex and Fabric Masks. The ultraviolet light and the storage box are for later and start out of the kit.

Essential · The collection

The collection starts with one real mask from the tradition you chose, bought from someone who can tell you where it was made.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon. Look for a folk art gallery, a tribal art show, an estate or regional auction, or a maker's own workshop. Ask whether the piece is decorative, made for dance, or danced, and get the answer on the receipt. Expect $30 to $150 for an honest first piece.
