Meal Prepping

Cook once on the weekend and open the fridge to ready meals all week.

Meal prepping starts in the kitchen you already have: you plan a few meals, cook them in one session, and pack them into portions for the days ahead. A single afternoon of roasting, simmering and boxing turns into lunches you can grab on a busy morning, with less weeknight cooking and fewer wasted groceries. The craft is in choosing dishes that hold up for a few days, cooking them in bulk, and storing them safely, and a beginner can pack a week of lunches from the very first session.

01

Why people love meal prepping

One session, a week of meals

Weeknights get easier

Dinner or tomorrow's lunch is already cooked, so a tired evening needs only a microwave.

It saves money

You buy for a plan, cook in bulk and eat what you bought instead of ordering out.

Less waste

A plan uses up the whole bag of peppers and the whole pack of chicken before they spoil.

One focused session replaces five scattered ones, with one round of washing up.

It is a satisfying routine

A fridge shelf of labeled, matching boxes is a small win you can see.

02

Your first prep session

Roasted chicken on a parchment-lined sheet pan with lime halves, sliced chiles and a bowl of herb sauce
One lined sheet pan roasts the protein for the whole batch

What you can prep in your first month

Fajita chicken rice bowls

Four roasted chicken, pepper and black bean lunches from one sheet pan and a pot of rice.

A two-recipe week

Pair the bowls with a second dish that shares ingredients, so one shopping trip covers both.

A roasted vegetable tray

A full sheet pan of mixed vegetables to add to bowls, wraps and eggs through the week.

A freezer stash

A big pot of sauce or stew split into single portions, labeled and frozen for the weeks ahead.

03

Keeping prepped food safe

Cool fast

Get cooked food into the fridge within 2 hours (1 hour on a day above 90°F). Bacteria multiply quickly between 40°F and 140°F.

Go shallow

Split big batches into containers about 2 inches deep so the middle cools quickly. A deep pot of rice or stew stays warm for hours in the fridge.

Fridge at 40°F or below, freezer at 0°F

A fridge thermometer tells you, since the dial on the fridge does not.

Three to four days in the fridge

Cooked meals are safe for 3 to 4 days. Anything you will not eat by then goes in the freezer on prep day, not on day four.

Freezing pauses the clock

Food kept at 0°F stays safe, and most cooked meals taste best eaten within 2 to 3 months.

Thaw in the fridge

Move a frozen portion to the fridge the night before, or thaw it in the microwave and eat it straight away. Never thaw on the counter.

Reheat thoroughly

Heat every portion to 165°F, stirring halfway in the microwave so there are no cold spots, and bring soups and sauces to a boil.

Reheat only what you will eat

Take one portion out at a time rather than warming the whole batch and putting it back.

04

Skills to build early

Plan, cook, pack

Planning with overlap

Choose recipes that share ingredients (one bag of onions, one pack of chicken) so nothing is left to spoil.

Cooking in parallel

Start the slowest item first and use the oven and stovetop at the same time.

Choosing food that keeps

Roasted vegetables, grains, beans, stews and sauces hold up for days; crisp salad leaves, fried food and cut avocado do not.

Packing wet and dry apart

Keep sauces, salsa and dressings in a small separate pot so the rest does not go soggy.

Portioning evenly

Divide by eye across all the boxes at once, a spoonful at a time, rather than filling one box before the next.

05

Two ways to prep

Weekly meal boxesCook on the weekend and pack complete meals for the next three or four days. This is where most people start, and the base kit covers it.

Start here

Pick one sheet-pan recipe and one grain, cook them on Sunday, and pack four lunches for Monday to Thursday.

Batch cookingCook a large pot of one freezer-friendly dish and freeze it in portions, building a stash that lasts for weeks. It needs a big pot and freezer portion trays.

Start here

Make one big pot of a freezer-friendly sauce or stew, freeze it in single portions the same day, and label each with the dish and date.

Big-batch bolognese recipe

Adding Batch cooking puts the stockpot and freezer trays into the kit; you can still drop either one there.

06

What trips beginners up

What to expect

  • Expect the first session to run long: two hours is normal until you learn to overlap tasks.
  • Expect some food fatigue: four identical lunches is plenty, so vary the sauce or swap the grain before you get bored.
  • Expect some textures to change: rice firms up in the fridge and roasted vegetables soften, so a splash of water before reheating helps.

Habits to drop

  • Don't plan a full seven days of fridge meals: cook for four and freeze the rest, or split the week into two shorter sessions.
  • Don't skip labels: a box with no date becomes a guessing game by Thursday.
  • Don't plan too many recipes: start with one or two and add more once the routine sticks.
07

What the kit covers

The essentials are the gear you use every session (microwave-safe glass containers, a large rimmed sheet pan, parchment and an instant-read thermometer) plus the shelf-stable ingredients for the fajita rice bowl recipe, so the kit doubles as its shopping list. Most kitchens already have a pot for rice and a knife and cutting board, so they are not on the list. The fridge thermometer and date labels are cheap and are what make storing food for several days safe. Turn on Batch cooking to add a large stockpot and freezer portion trays for big freezer batches.

Pack the week

Every line below is something you buy online. Compare the options and set your tiers in the kit. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out of the kit.

Glass meal prep containers with lids

Essential · Storage

They hold each portion in the fridge and go straight into the microwave, and glass does not stain or hold smells from sauces.

Get at least five single-compartment containers of 2 to 4 cups. Loosen or remove the lid before microwaving, since many lids are not microwave-safe.

Large rimmed sheet pan

Essential · Cookware

Roasting protein and vegetables together on one big pan is the backbone of most prep sessions, and the rim keeps juices in.
