Metal Model Kits

Turn a flat sheet of steel into a model you can hold.

A metal model kit is a build-once model made of metal parts: most often a postcard-sized sheet of laser-cut steel or brass whose pieces you clip out, bend and lock together with tiny tabs, with no glue or paint. The finished models are small and finely detailed (landmarks, aircraft, ships, movie vehicles), and a starter kit is an evening's work at a desk. Die-cast kits are the other common kind: a pre-painted metal car body that screws together in under an hour.

What building one involves

A sheet-metal kit arrives flat in an envelope: one to four thin sheets, each about 4 inches square, with every part held in place by hair-thin bridges. You clip a part free, bend it along its etched fold lines, push its tabs through the matching slots on the next part, then twist or fold each tab to lock the joint. The instructions are wordless diagrams, read one numbered step at a time. Most of the work is slow and close: lining up a tab about 1/32 inch wide, rolling a flat strip into a clean cylinder, and deciding which joint to close first so your pliers can still reach the next one.

02

Two kinds of kit

Sheet-Metal KitsLaser-cut steel or brass sheets that you clip, bend and tab together. This is the bigger half of the hobby, with thousands of subjects, and it is the one that needs hand tools of your own.

Start here

Pick a one-sheet kit rated easy, clip out only the parts for step one, and practice twisting a tab a quarter turn on the first joint before you go further.

Metal Earth instruction sheets
Die-Cast KitsA painted cast-metal body with a chassis, interior, wheels and screws. There is no bending and far fewer parts, so it suits anyone who wants a finished car on the shelf more than a fiddly build.

Start here

Choose a 1:24 car you like, lay the screws out by size against the parts list, and dry-fit the chassis to the body before driving a single screw.

Open a card to see its first step. Each kind adds its own kit and tools to the bench, and you can take them back out from the kit.

How to choose a first kit

Read the package before you buy

Count the sheets.

One sheet is one to two hours. Each extra sheet adds roughly an evening, and four-sheet kits are a week of sittings.

Check the difficulty rating.

Most makers print one on the package or the product page, and it mostly tracks how many curved and layered parts there are.

Favor boxy subjects first.

Tanks, trucks, buildings and bridges are mostly flat folds. Aircraft, ships and anything with wheels need rolled cylinders and cones, which is the hardest technique.

Start with bare steel.

Color-printed and plated kits show every plier mark and cannot be touched up.

Look at the finished size.

Many starter models are only 2 to 4 inches long, which is smaller than the package photo suggests.

Size up a die-cast kit by its scale.

At 1:24 the car is about 7 to 8 inches long, and a metal body on a plastic chassis is normal at that price.

Your first build, step by step

Tick these off as you go

What you can build in your first month

A one-sheet vehicle or landmark

About 20 to 40 parts with mostly flat folds, finished in a single evening.

A two-sheet kit with curved parts

A plane fuselage or a ship's hull teaches you to roll a panel around a pen before it goes on.

A color-printed kit

The same build, but the printed faces show scratches, so it rewards the careful handling you learned on the first two.

A 1:24 die-cast car

A break from bending, and a screw-together build that is done in under an hour.

05

What trips beginners up

  • Tabs break. Thin steel survives one bend, sometimes two, so a tab straightened and re-bent will usually snap off. Get the part seated before you lock anything.
  • Rolled parts spring back. Form a cylinder around something slightly narrower than the finished shape, or the seam will not close.
  • Parts vanish. A piece that springs off the cutters can travel several feet, so clip with your free hand cupped over the part.
  • The edges are sharp enough to nick a fingertip, and the packaging age guide is usually 14 and up for that reason.
  • Fold direction matters. Etched lines go on the outside of some folds and the inside of others, and a fold made the wrong way cannot be reversed cleanly.

Where to learn more

There are no classes for this hobby, and you do not need one: the printed diagrams carry you through a first kit. When a step is unclear, search the kit's name plus "build" on a video site, since most popular kits have a start-to-finish video you can pause at the step you are stuck on. Maker catalogs are the easiest way to compare difficulty ratings before buying, and builder forums are where people post fixes for the steps that go wrong most often.

07

Why the kit looks the way it does

The kits themselves are cheap, so most of a first order is tools you buy once. Tweezers and a mat help with either kind of kit. Cutters and smooth-jaw pliers are only for sheet metal, and a screwdriver set is only for die-cast, which is why each sits behind its own switch. The magnifier and the display case can wait until you know you will build more than one.

08

Lay out the bench

Tweezers and a mat start on the bench. The kit and tools for Sheet-Metal Kits or Die-Cast Kits join once you pick that kind, above or from the add-ons in the kit. Compare the options, then check out from the kit. Clicking a card selects it there.

Choose by size, not price. Measure the finished model first: most starter builds fit a 4 to 6 inch cube, while a 1:24 car needs a case about 12 inches long.
