Moth Trapping

Switch on a light after dark and meet the night shift in your yard.

A porch light and an old white sheet are enough to start tonight. Moth trapping (often just called mothing) means drawing moths in with a light after dark, looking at them up close, photographing and naming them, then letting every one go unharmed. Most yards hold hundreds of species that nobody in the house has ever seen, from thumbnail-sized emeralds to sphinx moths as big as a hummingbird, and the cast changes week by week through the warm months. Your photos and counts also feed real science, because moth records from ordinary backyards are how researchers track which species are spreading or disappearing.

01

What a night of mothing looks like

Light, look, name, release

There are two ways to do it, and most people end up using both. Sheeting is the sociable one: an ultraviolet light shines on a hanging white sheet, moths settle on the cloth, and you walk out every so often with a flashlight and a phone to see what has arrived. A live trap does the waiting for you: the same kind of light sits over a funnel on top of a bucket filled with cardboard egg trays. Moths spiral down the funnel, tuck themselves into the trays and sit quietly until you open the lid at dawn. Either way, the work is the same. You photograph each new moth, put a name to it, write down the count, and release everything into thick cover before the birds find it. Nothing is killed and nothing is kept.

Tick these off as you go

03

Choosing and placing the light

  • Moths see ultraviolet far better than we do, so a light that puts out UV in the 365 to 395 nanometer range pulls in many more species than a bright white bulb of the same wattage.
  • Check three things before buying: the wavelength printed in the listing, a rating for damp or outdoor use, and how it is powered. A plug-in bar or bulb suits a yard with an outlet, while a USB-powered light runs from a phone power bank anywhere.
  • A modest 10 to 20 watt UV light is plenty for a yard. More power draws moths from farther away, and also the attention of neighbors.
  • Put the setup where the light can be seen from trees, shrubs or unmown grass, and away from competing street and security lights.
  • Before each session, wipe dew and insect scales off the light, check the cord and connections are dry and off the ground, and pull the sheet taut so it does not flap.

04

Keeping the moths safe

Handle moths as little as possible.

Coax one onto a finger or into a pot rather than pinching its wings, because the scales rub off.

Keep a potted moth in the shade and let it go within a few minutes.

A pot in morning sun overheats fast.

Empty a trap early.

By mid-morning the bucket is warm, wasps and birds have learned where it is, and the moths are restless.

Leave at least two or three nights between sessions in the same spot, so the same moths are not kept from feeding and mating night after night.

Skip nights with heavy rain forecast

A bucket that takes on water drowns its catch. Drill a few small drain holes in the base to be safe.

What trips beginners up

  • Expect slow nights. A clear, cool, breezy evening or a full moon can leave the sheet nearly empty, and the same yard can produce fifty species a week later.
  • Not every moth gets a name. Many small brown ones cannot be told apart from a photo, so recording them to family or genus is normal and still useful.
  • Other insects show up too Beetles, caddisflies, crane flies and the occasional hornet. Give a wasp room and it will leave at first light.
  • Photographing only the showy moths is a habit to drop. A sharp top-down photo of every species, with the whole wing pattern in frame, is what makes identification possible.
  • Do not leave the light running all night, every night. It wastes the moths' short adult lives and wears on the neighbors.
  • Do not look straight into the UV light or work beside it for hours with bare eyes. Wear UV-blocking glasses and aim the light at the sheet, not at your face.
06

Safety and being a good neighbor

The risks are electrical and ultraviolet, not the moths. Use an outdoor-rated extension cord plugged into a GFCI outlet, keep every connection off wet ground, and never run a light that is not rated for damp conditions in the rain. Treat a UV light like weak sunshine: glasses that block UV and long sleeves are sensible for a long session at the sheet. Tell neighbors what the purple glow is before they wonder, and point the light away from their windows. On public land, check first. Many parks close at dusk, and national parks and some state lands require a permit for any insect trapping, even when everything is released.

07

Where to learn the moths

Identification is the skill that takes time, and free tools carry most of it. iNaturalist suggests a name from a photo and its volunteers correct it, BugGuide and the Moth Photographers Group show living moths the way you will see them on a sheet, and Butterflies and Moths of North America has checklists by county. National Moth Week, held each July, lists public moth nights where you can stand at someone else's sheet and ask questions. A printed regional field guide is still worth owning, because flipping through the plates is the fastest way to learn the families.

Why the kit looks like this

The light is the only specialized purchase, and it does not need to be an expensive one. Everything else is ordinary hardware: a sheet and clamps to make a landing surface, a cord to get power to it, and a bucket, a funnel and egg trays that turn into an overnight trap in ten minutes. Ready-made moth traps exist, but they cost several times more than these parts and catch much the same moths in a backyard. Spend what is left on a good field guide. An old white bedsheet from the closet replaces the sheet line entirely, so switch that one out of the cart if you have one.

09

Rig the sheet

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out.

UV black light for attracting moths

EssentialCore equipment

Ultraviolet light is what moths steer by, so this one item decides how many species turn up. It lights the sheet and later sits over the bucket trap.

Look for 365 to 395 nm and a rating for damp or outdoor use. A long bar lights a sheet evenly; a compact bulb or USB light is easier to hang over a funnel.
