Music Box Collecting

Collect small machines that play a tune from a steel comb and a spring.

You may already own the first one: a jewelry box with a dancer inside, a snow globe that plays a carol, a keepsake from a grandparent's dresser. Music box collecting is finding, playing and looking after mechanical boxes that make music with no electricity, only a wound spring, a pinned cylinder or a punched disc, and a comb of tuned steel teeth. It runs from ten-dollar novelty boxes to Swiss cylinder boxes from the 1800s that cost as much as a used car, and the same mechanism sits inside all of them. Every box in a collection does something when you wind it, and a tune from 1890 sounds today exactly as it did then.

What collecting music boxes involves

Most of the hobby is hunting and listening. You look through thrift stores, estate sales, antique malls and online auctions, wind what you find, and keep the ones that play well and fit the theme you have chosen. At home the routine is short: play each box now and then so its spring and gears keep moving, dust it, and note where it came from and what it plays. A session is ten or twenty minutes. Collections stay small by nature, because a shelf holds only so many boxes and each one has to earn its place by sounding good.

The parts every seller will mention

Seven words that turn up in every listing

Comb

A flat steel plate cut into teeth, each tuned to one note. The number of teeth is the note count. Novelty boxes have 18, better modern ones 30 to 72, and antique boxes often 100 or more.

Cylinder

A brass barrel set with hundreds or thousands of tiny pins. As it turns, each pin lifts a tooth and lets it go, which sounds the note.

Disc

A flat steel sheet with punched projections that does the cylinder's job and can be swapped for another tune. Disc boxes arrived in the late 1880s.

Spring and governor

A wound spring drives the movement, and a tiny spinning fan (the governor, or fly) holds the speed steady. If the governor fails while the spring is wound, the cylinder spins free and strips pins and teeth. Collectors call that a run.

Dampers

Fine wires or feather tips under the teeth that stop a tooth from buzzing when the next pin arrives. Worn dampers cause squeaks and chirps.

Tune sheet

The printed or handwritten card inside the lid of a cylinder box that lists its tunes. It is the best single clue to the maker and date.

Movement

The whole mechanism as one unit. In most boxes made since the 1950s it is a small standard part held in by two or three screws.

03

Four ways to collect

New and novelty boxesHand-crank boxes, carved wooden boxes, carousels and musical globes sold today. The cheapest way in, and you choose the tune.

Start here

Choose one tune you would be glad to hear a hundred times and buy a new box that plays it. Then decide what the next four have in common: the same tune in different cases, one composer, or one style of box.

Vintage keepsake boxesMusical jewelry boxes, figurines and souvenirs from the 1950s through the 1980s. They turn up in thrift stores for a few dollars and often play better than new novelty boxes.

Start here

Spend a Saturday at two thrift stores or an estate sale. Wind every musical jewelry box, figurine and globe you find, and bring home only ones that play a whole tune at a steady speed, for a few dollars each.

AntiqueSwiss cylinder boxes from the 1800s and the German and American disc boxes that followed them until about 1910. They sound far richer and cost from a few hundred dollars into the thousands, so this direction is mostly about learning to inspect before you pay.

Start here

Hear the real thing before you price one. Look up the nearest museum or collection on the society's worldwide list, go on a day with a demonstration, and write down which sound you liked: cylinder or disc.

MBSI worldwide museum list
Repair BenchBuying boxes that do not play and getting them going again. On modern boxes that is a ten-minute movement swap. On antiques it is specialist work that beginners should leave alone.

Start here

Buy a silent novelty box for a dollar or two, unscrew the movement from under the base, and fit a new one of the same size. Read the society's advice first so you know which boxes not to open.

MBSGB repair and restoration advice

Open a direction to see its first step. Antique can add a loupe and a humidity gauge to the kit, and Repair Bench a movement, screwdrivers and oil. The first two use the kit as it is.

What to check before you buy one

  • Play it all the way through. A box with several tunes should change cleanly from one to the next, and a seller who will not let it play is telling you something.
  • Look along the comb for missing teeth and broken tips. One missing tooth is a note gone from every tune, and replacing it costs more than most small boxes are worth.
  • Listen for the faults: a dull click is a bent or missing pin, a squeak is a worn damper, and a tune that speeds up or drags points at the governor.
  • Check for rust on the comb and green corrosion on the cylinder. Light dust is harmless, but pitted steel never sounds right again.
  • Count the teeth and compare with the price. More teeth means fuller music, and a seller calling an 18-note box rare is wrong.
  • On an antique, look for the tune sheet, a serial number stamped on the brass bedplate, and a case that matches the movement. Missing sheets and swapped cases both cut the value.
  • On a disc box, ask which discs come with it. A disc fits only the make and size it was cut for, and a machine with no discs is silent until you find some.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Old is not the same as valuable. Millions of musical jewelry boxes were made after World War II, and most sell for under twenty dollars however old they look.
  • Online listings rarely include sound. Ask for a video of the whole tune before you bid, and assume a box described as untested does not work.
  • Repair costs more than the box. A professional overhaul of an antique movement runs to hundreds of dollars, so a cheap non-runner is seldom a bargain.
  • Forcing the key. When the spring is fully wound the key stops. Pushing past that point breaks the spring or the winding click.
  • Stopping a tune halfway. Pins left resting against lifted teeth strain both, so let the tune finish before closing the lid or moving the box.
  • Reaching for household spray oil. It gums up as it dries and stops the governor. A stiff movement needs cleaning, not more oil.
  • Opening an antique movement with the spring wound. That is how a run happens, and it can destroy the comb in two seconds.
07

Looking after the collection

  • Keep fingers off the comb and cylinder. Skin oils start rust on steel and tarnish on brass.
  • Dust with a soft dry brush, stroking along the teeth from base to tip, never across them. Do not use water or polish on a movement.
  • Keep lids closed and exposed movements covered. Dust in the governor is the usual reason a box slows down.
  • Aim for steady room conditions, around 40 to 55 percent humidity. Damp rusts combs, and dry heat cracks veneered cases.
  • Before putting a box away for months, let it play until the spring has run down, so it is not stored under tension.
  • Carry a box level and with both hands, and never while it is playing.

08

Where to learn more

  • The two big collectors' societies publish free introductions and glossaries, and their journals are where new research on makers appears.
  • A local chapter meeting is the fastest education available: members play their boxes, explain what they paid and why, and often know who is selling.
  • The long-running email digest for mechanical music has decades of searchable answers on identification and repair.
  • A museum with working instruments lets you hear a large disc machine or an orchestral cylinder box, which no recording captures properly.
09

How the shopping list is built

The only thing you have to buy is a music box, and the ones listed here are examples of new boxes with sound movements, not a set to complete. A reference book and a soft brush are worth having from the start, because identifying what you find and keeping dust out of it are the two jobs that never stop. The Antique add-on holds what you need to inspect an old box and keep it in steady air. The Repair Bench add-on holds what a modern movement swap takes: a new movement, small screwdrivers and a needle oiler. The glass dome is for later, once you own a box whose movement sits in the open.

10

Stock the music shelf

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there. The box, the book and the brush start in the kit. The loupe and the humidity gauge join when you switch on Antique, and the movement, the screwdrivers and the oil when you switch on Repair Bench. The glass dome is there for later.
