National Park Passport Stamps

Collect a free dated ink stamp at every national park site you visit.

You can start with any notebook you own. Nearly every one of the 433 sites in the National Park System keeps a free rubber stamp at its visitor center: a round, postmark-style cancellation with the site name and the date of your visit. The Passport To Your National Parks program has run since 1986, and the collection is a small book that fills up one visit at a time. The stamps cost nothing and cannot be bought, traded for or collected from home, so each one proves you stood there on that day. People stay with it because it sends them to places they would never have picked: a battlefield off the interstate, or a president's boyhood home two towns over.

What collecting cancellations involves

A session is a park visit: usually half a day or more once you count the drive, with the stamp itself taking a minute. You find the stamp station (a desk or shelf in the visitor center or park store, sometimes a ranger station or a box outside), check the date, ink the stamp and press it into your book. Then you see the place, because the stamp is only worth having if the visit was. Between trips the hobby is planning: working out which sites sit near a route you are already driving, and which buildings hold their stamps. Many parks keep several different cancellations at different visitor centers, plus extras for trails, anniversaries and special programs, so a single large park can fill a page.

Choosing a book

Any notebook

The stamps are free and rangers will let you stamp a notebook, a travel journal or the park brochure, so the book is about how you want the collection organized.

Official pocket edition

4 by 6 inches, spiral-bound, with 112 pages split into nine color-coded regions. It fits a jacket pocket and suits most beginners, but each region gets only a few pages for cancellations. It also has printed spaces for the yearly sheet of ten picture stickers (one national, nine regional) that park stores carry; leaving them empty is fine.

Official large edition

7.5 by 10 inches with 192 pages and space set aside for more than 400 sites. Pick it if you already know you will visit dozens of sites and do not mind the weight.

Official binder edition

8 by 11 inches with rearrangeable pages. It is a home archive more than a trail book, so most people who own one still carry something smaller.

Third-party stamp books

These usually give each of the 63 national parks its own page with room for notes. They are a good fit if the big parks are your goal, and a poor one if you plan to stamp monuments and historic sites.

What to check

Paper thick enough that ink does not show through, a binding that lies flat on a counter, and blank space of at least 2 inches square per stamp.

Ways to collect

Five lists, one book

Close to homeEvery park site within a day's drive. This is the cheapest way in, and most people are surprised how many sites they have driven past for years.

Start here

Open the park finder, filter to your state and list every site within a two-hour drive. Visit the closest one this month and stamp it.

The 63 national parksThe headline parks, from Acadia to Zion. It takes years and real travel money, and it is the list most people outside the hobby recognize.

Start here

Print the list of 63 and mark the ones you can reach on trips you already have planned. Before the first of them, look up its entrance fee, since most of the 63 charge per vehicle.

One storyFollow a theme across sites, such as Civil War battlefields, presidential homes or civil rights landmarks. The book turns into a timeline.

Start here

Pick one story (the Civil War, the presidents, civil rights, westward trails) and find the three sites nearest you that tell it. Stamp them in the order the events happened.

Junior RangerFor families. Kids finish a free activity booklet at each park, take a pledge and get a badge, and stamp their own book alongside yours.

Start here

Before your next visit, read how the badge program works, then ask at the visitor center desk for the park's Junior Ranger booklet as soon as you arrive, since it takes an hour or two to finish.

Become a Junior Ranger (NPS)
Every unitAll 433 sites, plus the extra cancellations each one keeps. This is a lifetime project with its own club, awards and member-run stamp database.

Start here

Create a free account with the collectors' club and start its two-week database trial the week before a trip. Search the park you are visiting and write down every stamp it lists and which building holds each.

Open a way to see its first step. The Junior Ranger one can add a kids' activity book to the kit. The other four use the same kit.

Getting a clean stamp

Ink lightly.

Tap the stamp on the pad two or three times instead of grinding it in. Too much ink fills the letters; too little can be fixed by tapping again before you press.

Stamp on a hard, flat surface.

A book held in the air or resting on your knee gives a half-moon. Slide a card under the page if the spiral lifts it.

Plan the page.

A cancellation is about 1.5 inches across, so four to six fit a pocket-size page. Start at the top left and work in rows so the dates read in order.

Protect the facing page.

Fresh ink transfers when the book closes, so wait a minute or lay a scrap slip between the pages.

Stamp a spare slip at every site.

It costs nothing and covers you if the book gets wet or a page tears.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Arriving after the visitor center closes. Hours shrink in the off season and some small sites open only a few days a week. Check the park's page that morning and call if the stamp is the reason for the detour.
  • Leaving the book in the car or at home. Stamp a slip of scrap paper and mount it later; nobody can tell the difference in ten years.
  • Missing a stamp entirely. Many parks will stamp a sheet and mail it back if you send a polite request with a self-addressed stamped envelope, but ask first and do not count on it.
  • Never stamp a real travel passport. The State Department treats unofficial markings as damage, and a damaged passport can be refused at a border.
  • Expecting one stamp per park. Large parks spread different cancellations across visitor centers miles apart, so decide before the trip whether you want one or all of them.
  • Treating the visit as a stamp run. The collectors who last are the ones who walk the trail or take the tour first and stamp on the way out.
  • Fixing the date yourself. The date wheels are small and easy to jam, and the next visitor inherits whatever you set.

Where to learn more

The program's official page explains the book editions and posts new stamp locations each month. The National Park Service keeps the authoritative list of all 433 units, which matters because stamp books and guidebooks disagree about what counts. For the stamps themselves, the collectors' club runs the only thorough record: a database, updated by members, of every known cancellation and the building it lives in, along with forums where people post trip reports and stamp sightings.

08

What it costs

The stamps are free and so is entry to most park sites, so the kit is short on purpose: a book, a way to plan and a pouch to keep the book dry. The real cost is travel. Entrance fees apply mainly at the large national parks; the passes page lists them along with the annual pass, the groups who get in free and the fee-free days published each year. The ink pad and tape runner solve problems you may never have, so leave them until you do.

09

Pack the passport pouch

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there. The stamp book, the map or guide and the pouch start in the kit. The kids' activity book joins when you switch on the Junior Ranger add-on, and the ink pad and tape runner are there for later.

National park stamp book

Essential · The book

Cancellations are free, so the book is the whole collection: one place that keeps every dated stamp in order and survives years in a glovebox or daypack.

Any book takes the ink, so buy on paper and layout. The official program book is spiral-bound, sorted into nine color-coded regions and has room for every kind of park site; most others give a page to each of the 63 national parks only. Park stores sell the official pocket edition at its cover price, which is often well under the online price, so buy it at your first visitor center if you can wait.

Recommended · Trip planning

Most stamps are at sites you have never heard of: battlefields, historic homes, seashores and trails. A map or guide of the whole system shows which ones sit along a drive you are already making.

Check that it covers every kind of park site, not only the 63 national parks. A folding map is enough for route planning; a full guide adds a short write-up of each site.

Water-resistant zip pouch for the book

Recommended · Protection

A stamp book rides in a daypack next to a water bottle and comes out in the rain at trailhead stations. Wet pages wrinkle and old cancellations bleed, and a filled book cannot be replaced.

Choose a small, acid-free pad made for paper. Each region has its own ink color and station pads follow it, so use the station pad whenever it is wet and keep your own for the dry ones. Ask a ranger before inking a park stamp with it.

Acid-free tape runner

Optional · Stamping

When the book stays in the car or at home, you stamp a slip of paper and mount it later. A dry adhesive holds the slip flat without the ripple a wet glue stick leaves. This is for later, after your first forgotten-book visit.

Look for "acid-free" or "photo-safe" on the package so the adhesive does not yellow the page. Trim the slip close to the cancellation before mounting.
