Orchid Growing

Keep a moth orchid alive, then coax it into flowering again every year.

Orchid growing is keeping tropical orchids as houseplants and getting them to bloom again, year after year. Most people start with a moth orchid (Phalaenopsis), the kind sold in flower at grocery stores, because it likes the same temperatures people do and holds its blooms for two to three months. In the wild these plants cling to tree branches with their roots in open air, so they are grown in chunks of bark instead of soil and watered by soaking. Care takes a few minutes a week. The reward is a new flower spike that you watch lengthen and open over several months, on a plant that can live for decades.

01

What growing orchids involves

A few minutes a week, mostly looking at roots

Week to week, you look more than you do. You check the roots through the side of the pot, soak the plant when they have turned silver, and feed it lightly. Once a year or two you repot into fresh bark, because bark breaks down and starts to hold too much water. The rest is patience: a moth orchid grows one or two new leaves a year, rests after flowering, and sends up its next spike when fall nights cool down.

02

Your first weeks with an orchid

Tick each one off as you go

What you can do in your first month

A plant read by its roots

Two or three weeks of watering only when the roots in the clear pot turn silver, which is the habit that keeps an orchid alive.

A feeding routine

Fertilizer mixed at a quarter of the label strength in a marked jug and used at three waterings out of four.

A humidity tray setup

The pot raised over a little water, so the air around the leaves stays moist while the roots stay out of the wet.

A staked flower spike

The stem clipped loosely to a stake so the blooms face one way and the pot does not tip.

A rescue repot, if yours needs one

A plant found sitting in soggy moss with brown, mushy roots, moved into fresh bark right away instead of waiting for the flowers to finish.

03

How to pick a healthy first orchid

Start with a moth orchid

It tolerates household light and warmth better than any other type, and a blooming plant costs less than a bouquet.

Leaves

Look for firm, medium-green leaves that hold themselves up. Limp, wrinkled or yellowing leaves mean root trouble.

Roots

Plump green or silver roots are healthy. Brown, flat or mushy roots in the pot are rotting.

Buds

A spike with a few unopened buds at the tip gives you the longest show. Yellow buds that drop at a touch mean the plant was chilled or dried out.

The crown

The point where the leaves meet should be dry and clean, with no black or soft patches.

Pests

Check under the leaves and in the joints for white fluff or brown bumps before the plant goes near any others.

04

Light, water and warmth

Light

Bright shade with no direct midday sun. Leaves that turn dark green and floppy want more light. Leaves with a yellow or red tint, or dry tan patches, are getting too much.

Watering rhythm

In bark, most homes land on about once a week in summer and every 10 to 14 days in winter. Let the roots, not the calendar, decide.

Water quality

Tap water is fine in most places. If yours is softened with salt, use rainwater or filtered water.

Temperature

65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit suits a moth orchid. Keep it away from heating vents, cold glass and drafty doors.

Humidity

40 to 60 percent is the target. A tray of water under a grid lifts it a little around the plant. Misting does not last long enough to help.

Air movement

Roots that grow in open air in the wild need to dry between waterings, which is why orchid pots have slots in the sides.

05

Getting it to flower again

Cool fall nights, then two to three months of buds

Cool nights start a spike

A moth orchid sets a flower spike after three to four weeks of nights around 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit in fall. A spot near a window that cools off at night is usually enough.

Spike or root

A new spike comes out between the leaves and has a flattened tip shaped like a mitten. A new root has a smooth, rounded, shiny tip.

The timeline

From the first sign of a spike to open flowers takes two to three months. Do not turn the pot once buds form, or the flowers will twist to face the light.

After flowering

If the spike is still green, cutting it just above the second node from the base can bring a smaller side branch of flowers. If it has turned brown, cut it off at the base.

Light is the usual reason for no blooms

A healthy plant that grows leaves but never flowers needs a brighter spot or a grow light.

06

What trips beginners up

Overwatering

Rot from roots that never dry kills far more orchids than drought. If the pot feels heavy and the roots are green, wait.

Water in the crown

Water left sitting where the leaves meet causes crown rot, which can kill the plant in days.

Regular potting soil

It suffocates the roots. Use bark or moss made for orchids only.

Repotting in bloom

Disturbing the roots while the plant is flowering often makes it drop its buds. Wait until the flowers finish unless the roots are rotting.

Cutting aerial roots

The silver roots that climb out of the pot are healthy. Leave them alone.

Expect a long quiet stretch

After the flowers fall the plant can look like nothing but leaves for six months or more. That is rest, not failure.

Expect to lose a bottom leaf

One lower leaf yellowing and falling each year is normal. Several at once is a watering problem.

07

Where to learn more

The American Orchid Society publishes free culture sheets for every common type and lists affiliated local societies, where members sell divisions cheaply and will look at a struggling plant in person. For a quick diagnosis, post a photo of the roots and leaves to r/orchids or OrchidBoard. MissOrchidGirl's videos show repotting and root trimming up close, which is easier to follow on screen than in text. Once a moth orchid has rebloomed for you, the same sources cover the next types people try: dendrobiums, oncidiums, cattleyas and slipper orchids.

08

Why the kit looks like this

The plant is the cheapest part to get right, since one healthy moth orchid is all you need to learn on. The bark, the clear slotted pot and the snips are for the repot that every store orchid needs after its first flowering, and the fertilizer is there because bark holds almost no nutrients. A humidity tray and stakes make care easier without being required on day one. The moss, the grow light and the thermometer can wait until you are nursing a plant with few roots, chasing a rebloom in a dim room, or checking that nights are cooling off.

09

Pot up your first orchid

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The three optional lines start out of the kit.

Bark holds almost no nutrients, so a diluted feed at most waterings is what fuels new leaves and the next flower spike.
