Patch Collecting

Every patch records a place, a unit or a mission, and most cost a few dollars.

Patch collecting is building a set of embroidered cloth emblems around a theme: the national parks you have visited, your Scout council, one military branch, a space program, the fire departments of your state. New patches cost $4 to $8 at the source, a few hundred fit in one binder, and each one carries a date, a place and a maker you can look up. Most collectors start with patches they already own and never run out of ones to chase, because a patch exists for nearly every unit, event and trailhead.

What patch collecting involves

A typical session is quiet desk work: sorting new arrivals, looking up what each one is, sliding it into a pocket page and writing a slip that records where and when you got it. The hunting happens elsewhere, at visitor center stores, Scout shops, flea market boxes, militaria shows and in trades by mail. Because a patch is flat, light and cheap to post, trading is a bigger part of this hobby than of most: duplicates are currency, and many collectors meet most of the people they know in the hobby through an envelope.

Pick a direction

Scout patchesCouncil shoulder patches, lodge flaps and jamboree issues. The best-documented corner of the hobby, with organized trading events most weekends somewhere in the country.

Start here

Start with your own council. Find its current shoulder patch at the local Scout shop, then list the earlier designs it has issued and hunt them one at a time.

Military PatchesUnit shoulder insignia from the First World War to now. The deepest history and the highest prices, and the one direction where reproductions are a daily problem.

Start here

Choose one unit, such as a relative's division, and buy its current-issue shoulder patch first. Compare every older example you are offered against that known modern one under ultraviolet light.

US Militaria Forum
Morale PatchesUnofficial hook-backed patches made in small runs by independent designers. Bought new, displayed on loop boards, and traded when a run sells out.

Start here

Buy two or three hook-backed patches direct from a small maker whose designs you like, and press them onto a loop board so you can see how sizes sit together.

Travel and park patchesOne patch from each park, state or country you visit. The collection doubles as a record of where you have been, and every piece is bought at face price.

Start here

On your next park visit, ask at the visitor center store for the park patch and write the date of your visit on its slip the same day.

Space mission patchesEvery crewed mission has its own crew-designed emblem, so a program makes a finite set you can complete.

Start here

Pick one program, such as the first crewed moon landings, list its missions in order and buy the first patch on the list.

Police and fire patchesDepartment shoulder patches, usually collected by state or county and obtained by writing to the department or trading with other collectors.

Start here

Write to your hometown department, say you are a collector, and ask whether it sells or trades its shoulder patch. Enclose a stamped return envelope.

Open a direction to see its first step. Military Patches adds an ultraviolet flashlight to the kit, and Morale Patches adds a hook-and-loop display board. The other four directions use the base kit as it is.

How to read a patch

Two round orange rally patches dated 2019 lying on a wooden table, each with a black rolled edge
A rolled edge wraps the rim

Edge

A raised, rope-like border wrapped around the rim is a merrowed edge, standard on machine-made patches from the 1960s on. Older patches have a flat cut edge where the cloth was trimmed close to the stitching.

Backing

Loose white gauze points to the 1940s through 1960s, a stiff plastic film to the 1970s and later, and a shiny heat-seal glue or hook fastener to recent decades.

Coverage

On a twill patch the design is stitched onto visible woven cloth, while a fully embroidered patch is thread from rim to rim. Many issues exist in both, and collectors count them as separate varieties.

Thread

Cotton and early rayon stay dull under ultraviolet light, while modern synthetic thread glows bright. A glow on a patch sold as pre-1950 is a reason to walk away.

Condition

Unused patches are worth the most, but stitch holes and light soiling on a worn one are honest evidence of age. Glue residue, trimmed borders and iron scorch marks cut value sharply.

  • Expect most of what you find to be common. A box of 50 flea market patches usually holds one or two worth more than a couple of dollars.
  • Expect identification to take longer than buying. Undated patches often need a reference list or a forum question before you know what you have.
  • Expect reproductions in every military category that sells for real money, especially airborne and special forces insignia, many of them artificially aged.
  • Drop the habit of collecting everything. A drawer of unrelated patches has nothing to complete and little to trade toward.
  • Do not wear or display police, fire or military patches in a way that suggests you hold the job. Collecting them is legal, but posing as an officer is a crime in every state, and some departments will not release current-issue patches at all.

Where to learn more

Societies, forums, trading events

The collector societies below publish the reference lists that tell you what exists in your theme, which is the first thing you need once you have a few pages filled. Their forums and shows are also where questions about authenticity get answered by people who have handled thousands of examples. Scout collectors should look for a local trade-o-ree, a one-day swap meet where beginners are welcome and many tables have dollar boxes.

08

Why the kit looks like this

Nearly all of your money should go to patches, so the kit is only what keeps them safe and findable: pocket pages, a binder to hold them and clear sleeves for the pieces you carry to trades. The ultraviolet flashlight is listed for military patches only, because that is the one direction where telling an original from a copy decides whether a purchase was a good one. The loop board serves hook-backed morale patches, which do not sit well in pockets. A shadow box is optional and comes last: it is for the day you finish a small set and want it on the wall.

Fill the binder

The first line is the patches themselves, which you buy from the issuer and not online here. For everything else, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the binder. Clicking a card selects it there. The pocket pages, binder and clear sleeves start in the kit. The ultraviolet flashlight joins when you switch on Military Patches, and the display board joins with Morale Patches. The shadow box is optional and starts out of the kit.

Your first patches

essential · The collection

Three to five current patches bought at the source give you known-genuine examples to study and something to put on your first page.

Not sold on Amazon · buy from the issuer

Not sold on Amazon. Buy at face price from the issuer: a park visitor center store, a Scout shop, a department or an official mission patch seller. Expect $4 to $8 a patch.

Four-pocket binder pages

essential · Storage

Each pocket holds one patch flat and visible from both sides, so you can check the backing without handling it.

essential · Storage

A D-ring binder lets filled pages hang square instead of curling around a round ring, which keeps thick embroidered patches from bending.
