Reading tags and spotting fakes

Two tags

The paper hang tag is for the shop and the sewn-in tag is for you. A genuine plush has a sewn-in tag with a maker name, a materials line and a batch or date code.

Condition words

"new with tags" means both tags attached and clean. "Tags detached" or "no hang tag" is fine for a shelf piece and should cost much less.

Counterfeit signs

Eyes set unevenly, colors a shade off, thin fabric you can see stuffing through, and a tag with misspellings or no maker at all.

Price as a signal

A sought-after plush listed far below what others sell for is usually a copy. Compare against sold listings, not asking prices.

Sellers

On marketplaces, buy from the maker's own storefront or the marketplace itself where you can. Third-party listings with stock photos are where most copies come from.

Size check

Listings give height in inches. Measure a plush you own first, because 8, 12 and 16 inches look far more different on a shelf than they sound.

Cleaning without ruining the fur

Surface wash first

A damp white cloth with one drop of mild detergent, wiped with the nap, handles most marks and is safe for nearly everything.

Never machine wash

Mohair or wool fur, anything stuffed with wood shavings, plush with a music box, sound chip or battery pack, glued-on eyes, and any piece whose paper tag you want to keep.

No heat

A tumble dryer on anything but a no-heat air setting melts the tips of synthetic fur into a rough, permanent frizz.

Dry all the way through

Squeeze water out inside a towel without wringing, then give a dense plush two to three days. A damp core grows mildew.

Dust monthly

A soft brush, or a vacuum hose with a stocking stretched over the nozzle, keeps displayed plush from going gray.

Storage

Use a lidded bin or a cotton pillowcase in a cool, dry closet. Vacuum-seal bags crush stuffing and leave creases that do not come out.

What trips beginners up

Expect the shelf to fill faster than you planned. New releases never stop, and most collectors hit a space problem before a money problem.
Expect to miss releases. Popular plush sell out and reappear at resellers for three or four times the price, and many are restocked within months.
Sun fades one side of a displayed plush in a single summer, so a window ledge is the worst spot in the room.
Drop the idea that plush is an investment. The 1990s bean-bag craze ended with most pieces worth a few dollars, and that is the normal outcome.
Do not cut the tags off a plush you might ever sell or trade. Tuck the hang tag behind the plush on the shelf.
Do not buy everything cute. Ten pieces that fit your focus look like a collection, and forty unrelated ones look like a pile.

Ask, identify, trade

Most of the hobby's knowledge lives in free online communities, where people post a photo of an unknown plush and get a maker and a year back within the hour. Fan-run databases list every release for the big makers, with the tag changes that date a piece. In person, the best hunting is at thrift stores, estate sales, antique malls and toy or collectible shows, and teddy bear collectors have their own shows and clubs in most regions.

Why the kit is mostly care gear

The plush itself depends on which kind of collection you want, so each first plush sits behind its own add-on and only the care gear is shared.
