Pool Care

Keep your own pool clear, balanced and ready to swim in.

If there is a pool in your backyard, you already own the expensive part. Pool care is the weekly routine that keeps it swimmable: skimming and brushing, running the pump and filter, and testing the water so the sanitizer and pH stay in range. People who take it on themselves save the cost of a weekly service, and many end up enjoying it. A test kit turns guesswork into a few numbers, and a pool you balanced yourself is a satisfying thing to jump into. A small set of hand tools and a handful of chemicals covers nearly all of it.

01

The three jobs

Everything in pool care is one of these

Circulation

The pump pushes water through the filter, which traps fine debris and spreads the sanitizer around. Most pools need it running 8 to 12 hours a day in swimming season.

Cleaning

You skim what floats, brush the walls and steps so algae cannot take hold, vacuum what sinks, and empty the skimmer and pump baskets.

Chemistry

You test the water, then add small measured doses so the sanitizer can kill germs and algae without irritating skin or damaging the pool.

02

Your first week

03

The numbers to aim for

Free chlorine

1 to 3 ppm, and at least 2 ppm when the water contains stabilizer.

Acidity (pH)

7.2 to 7.8, with 7.4 to 7.6 the most comfortable for eyes and skin.

Total alkalinity

80 to 120 ppm. It steadies pH, so fix it before chasing pH.

Stabilizer (cyanuric acid)

30 to 50 ppm for an outdoor pool. It shields chlorine from sunlight, but too much makes chlorine sluggish.

Calcium hardness

200 to 400 ppm. It matters most for plaster and concrete pools.

Combined chlorine

Under 0.5 ppm. Higher means used-up chlorine is building up and it is time to shock.

04

Chlorine or saltwater: which pool do you have?

Chlorine PoolYou add the sanitizer yourself, usually as slow-dissolving tablets in a floating dispenser, topped up with shock. The tablets also add stabilizer with every dose, so test that level monthly.

Start here

Check how the last owner or installer dosed the pool. If there is no salt cell plumbed in after the filter, it is a chlorine pool: load a floating dispenser with tablets and test free chlorine the next day.

Saltwater PoolA salt cell turns dissolved salt into chlorine automatically. It is still a chlorine pool, so the same target numbers apply. You keep the salt and stabilizer topped up and watch pH, which tends to drift upward.

Start here

Find the salt cell and its control box, read the salt level it reports, and compare that with the range printed in the manual. Then test the stabilizer level, because a salt cell cannot keep up in sunlight without it.

Open your pool type to see what to check first. Each one ends in a button that adds its chemicals to the kit: tablets and a floating dispenser for a Chlorine Pool, salt and stabilizer for a Saltwater Pool. Picking one switches the other off.

05

Choosing and using a test kit

The test kit is the one tool every decision depends on, so it is worth choosing carefully. Drop-based kits, where you count drops of reagent into a water sample until the color changes, are more precise than dip strips and are what experienced owners rely on. Check that a kit measures free and combined chlorine separately rather than only total chlorine, and that it covers pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabilizer. Take the sample from elbow depth, away from the return jets and the skimmer. Rinse the vials in pool water before and after, hold reagent bottles straight up and down so the drops are the same size, and read colors in daylight against a white background. Reagents fade, so store the kit indoors out of the heat and replace the reagents each season.

06

What trips beginners up

What to expect

  • Expect the water to drift every week. Sun, rain, swimmers and top-up water all move the numbers, so testing never stops being necessary.
  • Expect a chemical change to take hours to show. Retesting ten minutes after a dose gives a false reading.
  • Expect at least one algae bloom in your first season, usually after a heat wave or a party. It is fixable with brushing, shock and patience.

Habits to drop

  • Stop adding a full dose in one go. Add half to three quarters, circulate, and retest.
  • Stop skipping the brush because the pool looks clean. Algae starts on walls and in corners before it is visible in the water.
  • Stop relying on tablets alone all season without testing stabilizer. Once it climbs past about 80 ppm, the only fix is draining some water.
  • Stop running the pump for only a few hours to save power. Poor circulation causes most cloudy water.
07

Handling pool chemicals safely

  • Never mix chemicals with each other, wet or dry. Different types of chlorine can ignite or explode on contact, and chlorine mixed with acid releases toxic gas.
  • Add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals. Pre-dissolve granules in a clean bucket of pool water only if the label says to.
  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves and splash goggles, open containers outdoors, and stand upwind.
  • Use a separate dry scoop for each product, and close lids tightly right after use.
  • Store everything cool, dry and locked away from children and pets. Keep acids and chlorine on separate shelves, and liquids below powders.
  • Run the pump while adding chemicals, and wait for the time on the label before anyone swims.
  • Chemistry is only one part of pool safety. A four-sided fence with a self-latching gate, compliant drain covers and constant adult supervision prevent drownings.
08

Where to learn more

Free owner communities walk through every test and dose in detail and will look at your numbers if you post them. Many local pool stores also test a water sample at no charge, which is a useful cross-check on your own results in the first few weeks. Treat the product recommendations that come with a store test as optional and compare them with what your own numbers say.

09

Why the kit looks like this

The kit splits into hand tools you buy once and chemicals you use up. One telescopic pole carries the net, the brush and the vacuum head, so buy a sturdy one and the attachments will last for years. The test kit is where spending a little more pays off, because every chemical purchase follows from its readings. Chemicals are sold in sizes that last a typical backyard pool anywhere from a month to a season, so the first shop costs more than the weekly upkeep that follows. Pick the Chlorine Pool or Saltwater Pool add-on to match how your pool makes its sanitizer. A robotic cleaner is the one big-ticket item and is entirely optional.

10

Stock the pool shed

Every line, with its options side by side

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The cleaning tools, the test kit, shock, the balancing chemicals and the safety gear start in the kit. Tablets and a dispenser join when you switch on Chlorine Pool, salt and stabilizer join with Saltwater Pool, and the robotic cleaner stays out until you add it.
