Poster Collecting

Own the printed paper that once sold a film, a band or a journey.

Poster collecting is hunting down original printed posters (the ones made to advertise a film, a concert, a railway or a product) and keeping them in good condition. The appeal is that each one is a real working object: it hung in a theater lobby or on a venue wall before anyone thought of it as art. You can start with a current film poster for the price of a pizza, the skills are mostly looking and measuring, and a good one ends up framed on your wall instead of in a drawer.

What poster collecting involves

Most of the hobby happens before you buy. You pick a lane (a director, a band, a decade, an artist), learn what the original printing of each poster looks like, and then watch dealers, auctions and fairs until a good copy turns up at a fair price. An original means a poster printed for the event or release it advertises. A reprint or reproduction was printed later to be sold as decoration, and it is worth a few dollars however good it looks. Once a poster arrives you measure it, check it against what you learned, record what you paid, and either sleeve it for storage or frame it so it can go on the wall.

02

Which posters should you start with?

Pick one lane to begin with

Movie PostersThe largest and best documented field. The standard US size is the one-sheet, 27 x 41 inches until the mid-1980s and 27 x 40 inches since. Current and recent releases cost $15 to $40, which makes them the cheapest way to learn.

Start here

Pick one film you love from the last ten years and search past auction results for its original one-sheet. Note the size, whether it is double-sided and what it sold for, then buy one that matches from a dealer who states it is an original.

Heritage Auctions movie poster results
Concert PostersScreen-printed show posters, usually 18 x 24 inches, signed and numbered by the artist in editions of a few hundred. Most cost $30 to $80 at the show or from the artist, and edition sizes are public, so you always know how many exist.

Start here

Go to a show by a band you like and buy the tour or show poster at the merch table, or look up the venue's poster artist and buy a signed, numbered print directly from their site.

Vintage Travel & AdvertisingStone lithographs made from the 1890s to the 1950s for railways, airlines, liquor and bicycles. Sizes vary widely, most are sold mounted on linen, and prices start around $200, so buy from a dealer who guarantees authenticity in writing.

Start here

Visit a vintage poster dealer or a poster fair and ask to see pieces under $300. Ask whether each one is linen-backed and what restoration it has had, and measure the one you bring home before you buy a frame for it.

04

How to spot an original

Measure first.

Decorative reprints are almost always 24 x 36 inches. A US film one-sheet at that size is not a theater original.

Look at the back.

Since around 1990 most studio one-sheets are double-sided, with the image printed in reverse on the back so it glows in a theater light box. Reprints are blank on the back.

Expect folds on older film posters.

Until the mid-1980s studios shipped one-sheets folded, so fold lines on a 1970s poster are normal and a rolled, flawless copy deserves a second look.

Read the bottom border.

Older US film posters carry a printed studio credit line and often a National Screen Service number such as 77/21 (the year, then the release number). Reproductions crop or blur this text.

Check the printing under a loupe.

Originals show a clean dot pattern or solid layers of ink. A scan-and-print copy shows a fuzzy double pattern or inkjet spray.

For screen prints, check the pencil.

A numbered edition (for example 112/300) and a signature in pencil or a stamped artist mark should match what the artist announced.

Feel the paper.

A glossy, photo-like stock on a poster that should be decades old is a warning sign.

What trips beginners up

  • Listings that say "vintage style", "reproduction" or give no size at all are selling decoration. Most posters on big marketplaces are reprints, sold honestly, so read the description before the title.
  • Condition drives price more than age. Pinholes, tape stains, trimmed borders and fading can cut value in half, and sellers grade generously, so ask for close photos.
  • Restoration is common on older posters and is fine when disclosed. The problem is paying an unrestored price for a restored poster.
  • Buying in ten lanes at once leaves you with a pile and no expertise. One lane, learned well, is cheaper and more fun.
  • Tape, poster putty, thumbtacks, dry mounting and lamination are permanent damage. A poster that has been dry mounted is worth a fraction of an untouched copy.
  • Posters are a slow, uncertain investment. Buy what you want to look at, and treat any rise in value as a bonus.
06

Storing and framing posters

  • Store posters flat in archival sleeves or loosely rolled in a wide tube, in a closet in the lived-in part of the house. Attics, basements and garages swing too far in heat and humidity.
  • Do not flatten the folds of an older film poster with an iron or heavy pressing. Leave folded posters folded or have a conservator handle them.
  • Handle a poster with two hands and support it from underneath. Most tears start at an edge when a large sheet is lifted by one corner.
  • Frame with UV-filtering acrylic and an acid-free backing, and keep the poster loose in the frame or held with archival corners. Nothing should be glued or taped to it.
  • Hang framed posters away from direct sun and from the wall above a radiator or a shower. UV-filtering glazing slows fading but does not stop it.
  • Linen backing (mounting a poster on canvas and acid-free paper) is a job for a professional restorer. It is standard for valuable older posters and unnecessary for modern ones.

07

Where to learn and look

The fastest education is past auction results: thousands of photographed, measured and graded posters with the price each one made. Auction houses and collector databases keep these archives online, and reading them for your lane costs nothing. Poster fairs, comic and film conventions and dealers' shops are where you see paper in person, which teaches more about condition than any photo. Collector forums and social media groups for your lane will usually look at a listing and tell you whether it is right before you buy.

08

What you need and why

The poster is the main expense and it is not on the list below as a product, because originals come from dealers, auctions, artists and merch tables. The gear is small: a tape measure and a loupe to check what you are buying, and gloves for handling. Storage and frames have to match your poster, so those lines sit under the three directions. Movie Posters adds a tube and a frame for 27 x 40 inch one-sheets. Concert Posters adds sleeves, a portfolio and a frame for 18 x 24 inch prints. Vintage Travel & Advertising adds only interleaving tissue, because those posters come in too many sizes for a ready-made frame. Turn on the one you chose. A frame is worth buying only for a poster you plan to hang.

09

Stock the flat file

The first line, the poster itself, is not something you buy online. For everything else, compare the options on each line, then check out from the kit panel. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The tape measure, gloves and loupe start in the kit. The gear for Movie Posters, Concert Posters and Vintage Travel & Advertising joins when you switch on the add-on it belongs to, and the UV flashlight stays out until you want it.

The collection starts with one real poster, and an inexpensive one teaches every check you will use on a costly one later.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon. Buy from a poster dealer, an auction house, the artist's own site or a merch table. Look for a written statement that it is an original printing, a measured size and a return policy. Recent film one-sheets run $15 to $40 and current show posters $30 to $80.

Tape measure

Essential · Inspection

Size is the first test of whether a poster is an original, and it decides which sleeve and frame will fit.
