Rose Growing

Plant one tough shrub rose and cut your own blooms all summer.

Rose growing is the craft of keeping rose bushes healthy enough to flower again and again from late spring to frost. You plant a bush in a sunny spot, water it at the roots, feed it through the season, snip off faded blooms and give it one real pruning a year. Modern shrub roses shrug off most of the diseases that gave roses a fussy reputation, so a first bush is far more forgiving than people expect. A healthy bush gives you scent by the door and cut flowers for months, and it can live for decades.

01

What rose growing actually involves

Most weeks a rose asks for little: a deep drink at the roots once or twice, and a short round with the pruners taking off spent flowers. Planting day and the annual prune are the two longer sessions, an hour or two each. A few times a season you scatter fertilizer around the base, and once a year, as winter ends, you cut the whole bush back hard to shape it. In between you learn to read the plant. Yellowing leaves, spotted leaves and curled buds each mean something different, and noticing them early is most of the skill.

02

How to pick a first rose

Start with a shrub rose

Modern shrub and landscape roses were bred to resist disease and rebloom without spraying. Hybrid teas give the classic long-stemmed flower but need more feeding, spraying and winter care.

Check the zone on the tag

The rose must be rated for your USDA hardiness zone or colder, or it may not come back in spring.

Look for disease resistance in the description

Resistance to black spot matters most in humid summers, and to powdery mildew in dry ones.

Potted or bare-root

Potted roses can go in the ground any time the soil is workable and are the easier first plant. Bare-root roses are dormant, cheaper and sold only in late winter and early spring.

Own-root or grafted

An own-root rose regrows true to type if a hard winter kills it to the ground. A grafted rose has a knobby joint near the base that needs protecting in cold climates.

Judge the plant, not the flowers

Look for three or more thick green canes and clean leaves. Skip plants with shriveled canes, spotted leaves or roots circling out of the pot.

Leave climbers for year two

Climbing roses need a sturdy support and regular tying in, which is a second skill on top of basic care.

03

The spot matters more than the plant

Six hours of sun, and ground that drains

Sun

At least six hours of direct sun a day. Morning sun is best because it dries dew off the leaves before fungus can take hold.

Drainage

Roses rot in soggy ground. Dig a test hole a foot deep, fill it with water, and choose another spot if it has not drained within a few hours.

Air

Leave about 3 feet between bushes and keep them off solid walls and fences, so leaves dry quickly after rain.

Soil

Slightly acidic, around pH 6.0 to 6.5, and loosened with compost. A basic soil test from your state extension office tells you where you stand.

Room

A single shrub rose fills a circle roughly 3 to 4 feet across when grown.

04

Plant your first rose

What you can grow in your first month

A planted bush

One shrub rose in the ground at the right depth, watered in and settled.

A mulched, watered bed

A soaker hose looped around the bush under 2 to 3 inches of mulch, so watering takes one turn of the tap.

Your first deadheading round

Faded flowers cut back to a five-leaflet leaf, which tells the bush to make more buds.

A bud vase of your own roses

A potted rose bought in bud usually opens within weeks, and one stem is enough to scent a room.

05

The skills that keep a rose blooming

The pruning cut

Cut a quarter inch above a bud that faces outward, angled away from the bud so water runs off. Sharp, clean blades leave a cut that heals. Dull ones crush the cane.

The annual prune

In late winter or early spring, when the buds swell, remove dead, damaged and crossing canes first, then shorten what is left by about a third to open the center to air.

Watering at the roots

Water the soil, not the leaves, and do it early in the day. Wet foliage overnight is how black spot spreads.

Feeding on a schedule

Roses are hungry plants. Regular light feeding through the growing season does more than one heavy dose.

Reading the leaves

Black spots with yellow halos, a white powdery coating, and clusters of small green insects on new buds are the three problems you will meet first. Each is easy to manage when caught on a few leaves.

06

A year with a rose

Late winter to early spring

The annual prune and a fresh layer of mulch.

Spring

First feeding as new growth appears. This is also planting time.

Summer

Watering once or twice a week, deadheading every few days, feeding every 4 to 6 weeks.

Early fall

Stop feeding and stop deadheading so the plant slows down and hardens off for winter.

Late fall

Rake up fallen rose leaves, which carry disease over winter. In cold climates, mound 8 to 10 inches of soil or mulch over the base after the ground starts to freeze.

07

What trips beginners up

The first year is quiet

A new rose spends its first season growing roots. Expect modest flowers in year one and a real show from year two or three.

Some leaf spotting is normal

Even resistant roses pick up black spot in a wet summer. A bush that drops some leaves is not dying.

Insects will find the buds

Aphids and, in much of the eastern US, Japanese beetles show up most summers. A blast from the hose or hand-picking into soapy water handles most of it.

Too little sun

A rose in part shade grows leaves but few flowers. Moving it to a sunnier spot in early spring works better than waiting for it to improve.

Timid pruning

Leaving a tangle of thin canes gives small flowers and more disease. Roses grow back strongly from a hard cut.

08

Thorns and sprays

Cover your forearms

Rose thorns puncture deeply, and wrist-length gloves leave the part that reaches into the bush bare.

Treat punctures properly

Wash thorn wounds with soap and water. Soil and plant matter can carry tetanus and a fungal skin infection called sporotrichosis, so keep your tetanus booster current and see a doctor about a puncture that turns into a sore that will not heal.

Protect your eyes

Wear glasses or safety glasses when leaning into a bush to prune. Canes spring back.

Follow the label on any spray

Mix and apply garden fungicides exactly as directed, spray in the evening when bees are not flying, and store them out of reach of children and pets.

09

Where to learn more

Local rose societies

Most hold free pruning demonstrations in late winter, and members know exactly which varieties thrive in your area.

Public rose gardens

Visiting one in June shows you grown bushes side by side, with labels, before you commit to a variety.

Your state extension office

Offers low-cost soil tests and region-specific advice on rose diseases and planting dates.

10

Why the kit looks like this

A plant, three tools, and what it lives on

The four essentials get a rose into the ground and let you care for it without bleeding: the plant, a shovel, a pair of pruners and gloves long enough for thorns. The recommended lines are what the rose lives on through its first season, namely something to enrich the planting hole, fertilizer, mulch and a soaker hose that waters the roots while keeping the leaves dry. If you already garden, you likely own the shovel and may have compost on hand, so switch those lines off. The one optional line solves a problem that may never come: a fungicide for a summer when leaf spot gets ahead of you.

11

Stock the garden shed

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the shed list. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. Everything starts in the kit except the fungicide, which you may never need.
