Sauna Building

Frame, insulate and panel a small hot room you will use for decades.

Sauna building is planning and constructing your own hot room: a small insulated box lined in softwood, with tiered benches and a heater full of stones you ladle water over. Most first builds are a converted closet or basement corner, or a shed-sized cabin in the yard. It is ordinary carpentry on a small scale, so someone who can frame a wall and cut trim square can do nearly all of it. The parts that are not yours are few and firm: a licensed electrician wires the heater, and a wood stove goes in to its listed clearances with a proper chimney. The reward is a room that costs a fraction of a prefabricated one and gets better with every hour you put into the details.

What a sauna build involves

A sauna is five layers, built from the outside in: a stud frame, mineral wool between the studs, aluminum foil with taped seams, thin furring strips that leave an air gap, and softwood boards. Inside go two tiers of benches, a heater or stove, a light, a door that swings outward and two vents. Most of the hours go to cutting and nailing paneling and to building benches. Plan on working in half-day and full-day blocks: a weekend each for framing, insulation and foil, paneling, and benches, with waits in between for the electrician and the inspector. This guide covers the traditional hot room with stones and steam. Infrared cabins are a different product and nearly always arrive as a kit.

Permits, fire and health

Read this before you buy a heater or cut a board

Permits come first

A new 240-volt circuit needs an electrical permit almost everywhere. A wood stove, a new outbuilding or a change to a bathroom usually needs a building permit too. Call your building department before buying anything, and tell your home insurer about a wood stove.

The heater wiring is an electrician's job

Most electric sauna heaters need a dedicated 240-volt circuit of 30 to 50 amps, high-temperature wire and a disconnect. Do the carpentry yourself and hire a licensed electrician for the circuit, the heater connection and the light.

Buy a listed heater and follow its manual exactly

Look for a heater certified to the sauna heater safety standard (UL 875 in the US). The manual gives the minimum room size, ceiling height and distances to wood. Those numbers are not suggestions.

Wood stoves need listed clearances and a real chimney

Keep the stove and its pipe the listed distance from anything that burns, set it on a noncombustible floor such as concrete or tile, and run an insulated Class A chimney through the roof. The top must stand 3 feet above the roof where it exits and 2 feet above anything within 10 feet.

Guard the heater

Fence it with a wooden rail at the spacing the manual gives, so nobody can stumble or lean into it. Never hang towels or clothes above a heater: drying laundry over the stones is a leading cause of sauna fires.

Ventilate

Put a fresh-air intake near the heater and an exhaust on the far wall, sized and placed as the heater manual shows. A sealed hot room goes stale and leaves bathers dizzy. A wood stove also needs a carbon monoxide alarm in the changing area.

The door opens outward and never locks

Use a roller or magnetic catch so a push from inside always opens it.

Leave the wood bare and the foil unbroken

Skip paint, varnish, pressure-treated lumber and plastic sheeting inside the hot room. They off-gas or melt at sauna temperatures.

Use it with care

Keep sessions to 15 or 20 minutes, cool down and drink water between rounds, and stay out after drinking alcohol. Talk to a doctor first if you are pregnant, have heart disease or low blood pressure, or take medication that affects either. Children go in briefly, on the low bench, with an adult.

03

From empty corner to first steam

One slat per step: tick each as it goes down

What you can build in your first month

Scale floor plan

A drawing on graph paper with bench heights, door swing, heater clearances and the room volume worked out in cubic feet.

Framed and insulated shell

Stud walls and a ceiling at 16 inches on center, filled with mineral wool, ready for the electrician's rough-in.

Foil-wrapped room

Every wall and the ceiling covered in sauna foil with all seams taped, which is the step that makes the room hold heat.

First paneled wall

One wall of tongue-and-groove boards over furring strips, nailed through the tongue so no nail head shows.

Duckboard floor mat

A slatted softwood panel that lifts out for cleaning and uses up your offcuts.

04

Electric heater or wood stove?

Pick one and its heater and parts join the kit. Picking the other swaps them, and picking the same one again takes them back out.

Size by room volume

Roughly 1 kilowatt per 45 to 50 cubic feet for electric. Add volume for a glass door, a window or bare masonry, because each soaks up heat.

Check the stone capacity

More stone gives softer, longer steam. A small wall heater holds about 40 pounds and a larger floor model can hold several times that.

Before every session

Check that nothing is sitting on or near the heater, open the intake vent, and once or twice a year restack the stones and throw out any that have cracked or crumbled.

05

Four ways to build one

Indoors, in the yard, wood-fired or from a kit

Indoor conversionA closet, bathroom corner or basement nook becomes the hot room. The shell and roof already exist, so this is the cheapest and fastest route.

Start here

Measure a closet, bathroom alcove or basement corner and check it gives you at least 4 by 6 feet of floor and 7 feet of height. Then find your electrical panel and count the open breaker slots, because that decides whether an electrician can add the heater circuit cheaply.

Backyard cabin with electric heatA shed-sized building on a gravel pad or deck blocks, with power trenched from the house.

Start here

Call your building department and ask two things: the size limit for a shed without a permit, and the setback from the property line. Stake out the footprint in the yard with string before you price any lumber.

Wood-fired backyard saunaThe same small cabin heated by a stove, with a chimney through the roof.

Start here

Download the installation manual for a stove you are considering and read its clearance table. Draw those clearances on your floor plan first. They often add two feet to the room.

Pre-cut kitA barrel or panel sauna that ships as numbered parts and goes together in a weekend or two. It costs more than lumber and teaches less, but the joinery is done for you.

Start here

Ask a kit seller for the assembly manual and the shipping weight before you order, and pour or level the base it specifies. A kit still needs the same heater circuit and the same permit questions.

Open a card to see its first step. The first three also put their heater in the kit, and you can switch it back out from there.

06

Wood, floor and bench details that matter

Paneling wood

Western red cedar, aspen, basswood, alder, hemlock or thermally modified softwood, in tongue-and-groove boards about 5/8 inch thick. Pick clear boards for anything skin touches. Knots get hot and pine and spruce knots weep resin.

Benches

The upper bench should be 20 to 24 inches deep so you can sit back or lie down. Height matters more than floor area, because the heat lives in the top third of the room.

Floor

Concrete, tile or sheet vinyl that can be mopped, sloped to a drain if you can manage it. Wood flooring and carpet hold sweat and rot.

Air gap

The furring strips leave about 3/4 inch between foil and paneling so the back of the boards can dry.

Light

One low-wattage fixture rated for sauna heat, placed low or behind the backrest so it does not glare.

07

What trips first-time builders up

  • The electrical work and the permit often cost more than the lumber. Get those quotes before you commit to a location.
  • Benches built too low are the most common regret. Feet below the top of the stones means cold feet for the life of the room.
  • An undersized heater never reaches temperature, and an oversized one cycles off before the stones are hot. Size from the volume, not from a guess.
  • Gaps in the foil let moisture into the insulation. Tape every seam, every fastener and around every electrical box.
  • Clear softwood is expensive and comes in limited lengths. Order 10 to 15 percent extra and plan the layout around the boards you can get.
  • Paneling goes slowly around the door, vents and heater. Expect the last wall to take as long as the first three.
  • New wood and new heaters smell for the first few firings. Run the room hot and empty with the vents open before judging it.
08

Where to learn the details

The best free reference is a long set of builder's notes that explains why Finnish saunas are shaped the way they are, with numbers for bench height and ventilation. Build diaries on enthusiast sites show the order of work in photos, and the main sauna forum will review a floor plan within a day. Read your heater's installation manual before any of them, because where advice conflicts, the manual and your inspector win. Visiting a public sauna or two first tells you what bench height and heat you like.

09

Why the list looks this way

The first two lines are the biggest costs and neither ships in a box: the permits and electrician, and the lumber and insulation. The rest of the essentials are the sauna-specific parts a hardware store rarely stocks, such as foil, a sauna door and a heat-rated thermometer. The heater is behind a switch because the electric and wood-fired routes share almost no parts. Either one is the largest single part you will order. The saw and nailer are recommended, not essential, since many builders already own them or can borrow them for the few weekends they are needed. The list assumes you already own basic carpentry tools: a drill, a hammer, a level, a square and a tape measure.

A glass-fronted sauna cabin
10

Stock the build

The first two lines are not things you buy online: the permits and licensed trade work, and the lumber and insulation from a yard. The essential and recommended parts start in the kit. The heater and its parts join once you pick Electric Heater or Wood-Burning Stove, above or from the add-ons in the kit. Compare the options, then set your picks and check out from the kit. Clicking a card selects it there.

Permits and licensed trade work

essential · Permits and trades

The heater circuit has to be permitted, installed by a licensed electrician and inspected, and a wood stove needs its own permit and inspection. Skipping this is a fire risk and can void your home insurance.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon. Call your city or county building department for the permits, then hire an electrician licensed in your state for the heater circuit and the light. Expect $50 to $300 in permit fees and $500 to $2,000 for the circuit, depending on the distance from the panel.

Lumber and mineral wool insulation

essential · Materials

Studs, mineral wool batts, furring strips, tongue-and-groove paneling and clear bench boards make up the room itself. Mineral wool tolerates heat and does not burn.

Not sold on Amazon

Not sold on Amazon. Buy from a local lumberyard, home center or sauna supplier, where you can pick clear boards and get full lengths delivered. A 4 by 6 foot room needs about 200 square feet of paneling plus 10 to 15 percent for waste, and batts sized for your stud depth and spacing.

Aluminum foil vapor barrier

essential · Materials

Foil reflects heat back into the room and keeps steam out of the insulation. Plastic sheeting melts at sauna temperatures.
