Seed Saving

Grow a plant once, then keep its seed for every year after.

A ripe tomato, a drinking glass and a paper envelope are enough to save your first seeds. Seed saving means letting a few of your best plants finish their life cycle, then collecting, cleaning, drying and storing the seed so you can sow it next year. Over a few seasons the plants adapt to your own soil and weather, you stop buying packets for your favorite varieties, and you end up with seed worth trading: gardeners have kept heirloom varieties alive this way for generations.

01

What seed saving involves

Most of the work is waiting. You mark a few healthy plants early in the season and leave them alone long after you would normally have picked them: bean pods rattle, lettuce bolts into a tall stalk, cucumbers turn fat and yellow. The hands-on part comes in short bursts of an hour or two. You harvest the seed, separate it from pulp or chaff, dry it for a week or two indoors, then label and store it somewhere cool, dark and dry. The same plot that feeds you can produce next year's seed, as long as you leave room for a few plants to go past eating stage.

02

Your first seed harvest, step by step

What you can save in your first month

Tomato seed

Ferment the pulp of one ripe fruit for a few days, rinse, and dry. It teaches the whole wet-seed method in a week.

Dry beans or peas

Pick pods that have turned papery on the vine and shell them. The simplest seed there is.

Marigold or zinnia seed

Pull apart a brown, crisp flower head and you have dozens of seeds for next year's border.

Lettuce seed

Shake a bolted plant's fluffy heads into a paper bag, then sieve out the chaff.

A germination test

Roll ten of your seeds in a damp paper towel and count how many sprout, so you know the batch is good.

03

Which crops to save first

Beans and peas

Self-pollinating, so different varieties can grow a few feet apart. Leave the pods on the vine until they are brown and papery.

Tomatoes

Mostly self-pollinating. One ripe fruit holds enough seed for years of plants.

Lettuce

Self-pollinating, but you have to let it bolt and flower, which takes weeks after the eating stage.

Peppers

Easy to clean (scrape and dry), but bees cross them more often. Grow one variety or bag a few blossoms.

Wait a season for squash, cucumbers and melons

Insects cross every variety of the same species in the neighborhood, so they need hand pollination.

Wait longer for corn, carrots, beets and cabbage family crops

Corn needs a large block of plants to stay healthy, and the others flower only in their second year.

04

The skills that matter early

Reading a variety label

Open-pollinated and heirloom varieties come true from seed. Hybrids do not.

Judging seed maturity

Seed is ready weeks after the vegetable is. Dry-seeded crops are ready when pods or heads are brown and brittle; wet-seeded fruit when it is past eating ripe.

Dry processing

Thresh pods by crushing or rubbing, then winnow by pouring seed between two bowls in a light breeze so the chaff blows off.

Wet processing

Fermenting tomato and cucumber seed in its own juice dissolves the gel coat that slows sprouting. Good seed sinks, pulp floats.

Drying and storing

Aim for a storage spot where the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit plus the percent humidity adds up to less than 100.

Record keeping

A packet with no name and year is close to worthless. Write the label before you fill the envelope.

05

How long saved seed keeps

Rough numbers for cool, dry storage

About 1 to 2 years

Onions, leeks, parsnips and parsley. Regrow these often.

About 3 years

Beans, peas, peppers, carrots and corn.

About 4 to 6 years

Tomatoes, lettuce, squash, cucumbers, melons and cabbage family crops.

  • Storage that is 10 degrees Fahrenheit cooler roughly doubles those numbers. A warm, humid shelf can halve them.
  • Test old seed before you rely on it: if fewer than 6 in 10 sprout on a damp paper towel, sow thickly and save fresh seed that season.
06

What trips beginners up

Expect to give up some harvest

A plant left to make seed stops producing food, and a bolting lettuce or drying bean row looks untidy for weeks.

Expect surprises from crossed seed

A squash saved next to a different squash can grow something inedible. Stick to self-pollinating crops until you learn isolation.

Expect variation

Seed saved from only one or two plants narrows the gene pool. Save from several plants, even of easy crops.

Storing seed before it is dry

Damp seed molds in a sealed jar within days. When in doubt, dry it another week.

Saving from the first or the worst

Early-bolting lettuce passes on early bolting, and diseased plants can pass disease along on the seed. Save from the plants you would want again.

Trusting memory instead of a label

By spring, three unmarked envelopes of tomato seed look identical.

Drying with heat

An oven or a sunny windowsill can kill seed. Anything above about 95 degrees Fahrenheit is too hot.

07

Seed you should not save or share

Patented varieties

A variety sold under a utility patent cannot legally be saved at all. The packet or catalog listing says so.

PVP varieties

Under the US Plant Variety Protection Act you may replant your own saved seed of a protected variety, but not sell or trade it as seed.

Hybrids

Saving F1 seed is usually legal, but the next generation will not match the parent, so it wastes a season.

Seed crossing a border

Mailing seed into or out of the US generally needs a permit or a plant health certificate. Swap within the country unless you have checked the rules.

Invasive plants

States keep noxious weed lists. Do not collect or share seed of anything on yours.

08

Where to learn more

Seed libraries, swaps and free handbooks

The nonprofit seed banks publish most of what a beginner needs for free, crop by crop. A local seed library or seed swap is the fastest teacher: people there know which varieties do well in your area and will usually hand you a packet to start with. Most swaps happen in late winter, around the last Saturday of January, and many public libraries now host a seed drawer year round.

09

Why the kit looks like this

Seed saving has no core machine to buy, so the kit is small and almost every line can be improvised from the kitchen to begin with. The four essentials cover the two things that ruin saved seed: mix-ups and moisture. The recommended lines speed up cleaning and drying once you are handling more than a few plants, and the reference book earns its price the first time you try a crop with special isolation or timing needs. Nothing here wears out quickly: envelopes and desiccant are the only things you will buy again.

Glass jars with paper seed packets stored inside, and two more packets lying on the table in front
10

Fill the seed box

Envelopes, a jar, a desiccant and a strainer come first

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the kit list. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The organizer box stays out of the total until you switch it on.

Paper seed envelopes

Essential · Storage

Paper lets the last traces of moisture escape, and a printed or blank front gives you a place for the variety, year and source.
