Ships in Bottles

Build a tiny sailing ship, fold it flat, and raise it inside glass.

An empty clear bottle from the recycling bin is the start of this one. You carve a ship a few inches long, hinge its masts so they lie flat, slide it through the neck and pull a few threads to stand the rigging up inside the glass. Sailors have been doing it since the 1800s, and the puzzle still makes people stop and ask how it got in there. It is quiet desk work that needs little space, a handful of small tools, and patience more than skill.

01

How the ship gets in

The whole ship is built outside the bottle. The hull is carved narrow enough to pass through the neck, and each mast sits on a tiny hinge so it can fold back toward the stern. Threads run from the mastheads forward through the bowsprit and out past the bow. With the masts folded and the sails curled around them, the ship slides in stern first and is pressed into a clay sea. A gentle pull on the threads stands everything up, a drop of glue locks them, and the loose ends are cut off inside the glass. Most of your time goes into building and testing on the desk. The trip through the neck takes minutes.

Kit or scratch build?

Open one to see where to start

Kit BuildA boxed set with a bottle, shaped or pre-cut wood, thread, sails and a plan. You skip the measuring and design work and learn the folding trick on parts that are known to fit. Glue, paint and tools are extra.

Start here

Order a kit with a wide-necked bottle and a one- or two-masted ship, then read the whole instruction sheet before opening any glue.

Scratch BuildYou pick your own bottle and make every part from basswood, bamboo and thread. Materials cost very little and any ship is possible, but you do the measuring and planning yourself. Most builders end up here after one kit.

Start here

Rinse out a clear bottle this week, measure the inside of its neck, and sketch a single-masted sloop at full size that fits those numbers.

Folk Art in Bottles workshop and plans

Each card ends in a button that adds that route's materials to the bench list. You can switch them back out there.

03

Choosing and preparing a bottle

  • Pick clear, colorless glass. Tinted bottles hide the detail you worked for.
  • Look through the side at a ruled sheet of paper. Wavy lines mean the glass will distort the ship, and a thick mold seam should end up underneath or at the back.
  • For a first build, look for a neck at least 3/4 inch wide inside and no longer than about 2 inches. A wide, short neck forgives almost everything.
  • Measure the inside of the neck by finding the largest drill bit or dowel that drops through, then make the hull 1/16 inch narrower than that.
  • A bottle with flat sides lies still on the desk. A round one needs a cradle, such as a rolled towel or two strips of wood.
  • Soak the label off, wash with hot soapy water, rinse, and let the bottle dry open for several days. Moisture trapped inside fogs the glass after you cork it.

04

Your first ship, start to cork

Tick each one off as you go

What you can build in your first month

A practice hull

A two-inch block carved, sanded and painted, made only to learn how small you have to work to clear the neck.

A folding-mast test rig

One hinged mast on a scrap of wood that you raise and lower by thread until the motion is reliable.

A single-masted sloop

One mast, two paper sails and three threads, the classic first ship and the easiest to get through a neck.

A sea and shoreline scene

Blue clay waves with a tiny lighthouse or rocks, good practice with long tools before a ship goes in.

05

Skills to work on early

Carving small

Shaping a hull two or three inches long with light knife cuts and sandpaper, and stopping to test the fit.

Hinging masts

A hinge that folds flat, stands straight and does not wobble is the heart of the method.

Rigging in order

Every thread has to stay slack when folded and go tight when raised, so the length of each one matters.

Working at arm's length

Placing, pressing and gluing with tools 10 to 12 inches long, where every move looks reversed through the glass.

Making your own tools

Bending coat hanger wire into hooks, pushers and blade holders shaped for one bottle.

06

What trips beginners up

What to expect

  • Expect a first ship to take 10 to 20 hours, and expect the first one to look rough. Clean rigging comes with the second and third.
  • Your hands will feel clumsy inside the neck for the first few sessions. Slow, small movements fix most of it.
  • Something will snap or come unglued inside the bottle. Nearly everything can be repaired in place with a long tool and a drop of glue.

Thread rigging, seen through the glass

Mistakes to skip

Building the ship before measuring the bottle.

The neck sets every dimension, so measure first.

Skipping the rehearsal.

A mast that snags on the desk will snag worse inside the glass.

Using too much glue.

Fumes from super glue leave a white haze on the inside of the glass, so use white glue where you can and keep the bottle open until everything has cured.

Trimming the control threads too short before the ship is in.

Keep them long until the glue has set.

07

Space and setup

A desk or kitchen table with a bright lamp is enough, and the whole project stores in a shoebox between sessions. Work over a cutting mat or a tray so tiny parts do not vanish into the carpet. Always carve away from your fingers and change the blade as soon as it drags, since a dull blade slips. Open a window when you use super glue, and check a secondhand bottle for chips around the rim before you put your fingers near it.

08

Where to learn

Read how other builders did it

A single good book covers the full method and usually includes plans for a first ship. After that, the fastest way to improve is to read other people's build logs, where every hinge, knot and mistake is photographed. Online galleries are also worth a browse to see how far the craft goes, from a plain sloop to a four-masted bark under full sail.

09

Why the kit looks like this

The tools are the real purchase, and all of them carry over to every ship you build afterward. The materials are close to free: a scratch-built ship uses a few cents of wood, thread and paper, and masts come from bamboo skewers or toothpicks you already have in the kitchen. The long tools for working inside the bottle are bent from a wire coat hanger, so the only reach tool on the list is a pair of long tweezers. Choose Kit Build or Scratch Build below to add the materials for your route.

10

Stock the bottle bench

The knife, long tweezers, pin vise, sandpaper, glue, paint and brushes start on the bench. The ship and bottle join once you pick Kit Build or Scratch Build, above or from the add-ons in the list. Compare the options, then set your tiers and check out from the list. Clicking a card selects it there.
