Starter guide

Skincare

Three products and two minutes a day cover most of what skin needs.

Skincare is the habit of looking after your skin on purpose: washing it gently, keeping it moisturized, protecting it from the sun, and then (only if you want to) adding one targeted product at a time for something specific like breakouts or dryness. The appeal is partly the result and partly the ritual. It is two quiet minutes morning and night, and it rewards patience and note-taking more than spending. Once the basics are steady, reading ingredient lists and working out what your own skin responds to turns into a real interest.

01

What a routine actually is

Cleanse, moisturize, protect

Every routine, however long, is built on three jobs. Cleanse: remove sunscreen, oil and the day's grime without leaving skin tight. Moisturize: put water back and slow it from leaving. Protect: block ultraviolet light, which causes most visible aging and most skin cancer. Anything else (acids, retinoids, vitamin C) is a treatment that slots in between cleansing and moisturizing, and each one is aimed at a single concern. The order rule that covers nearly everything: thinnest and most watery first, thickest last, sunscreen on top in the morning.

Pick one concern to work on

Just The BasicsCleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen, done every day. It needs nothing beyond the base kit, and it is a complete routine in its own right, not a waiting room for something fancier.

Start here

Run the three-product routine morning and night for four full weeks without adding anything, and take one bare-face photo by the same window each Sunday. Most people find this alone fixes more than they expected.

Acne-Prone SkinClogged pores, blackheads and inflamed breakouts. The tools are an oil-dissolving acid that clears pores, an over-the-counter retinoid that keeps them from clogging, and patches that stop you from picking.

Start here

Add the leave-on salicylic acid product three nights a week after cleansing, and put a patch on any spot you are tempted to pick. Start the adapalene gel only after a month, on the nights you skip the acid.

AAD: Acne tips for managing
Dry Or Sensitive SkinTightness, flaking, redness or stinging from products that others tolerate. The work here is rebuilding the skin barrier with extra hydration and a protective ointment, and removing irritants instead of adding actives.

Start here

Tonight, press the hydrating serum onto still-damp skin, put your moisturizer over it, and dab a thin layer of ointment on the driest or most irritated patches last.

AAD: Dermatologists' top tips for relieving dry skin
Aging And Sun DamageFine lines, dullness and dark spots. Sunscreen does most of the work, with an antioxidant serum in the morning and a retinol at night doing the rest over several months.

Start here

Use the vitamin C serum each morning under sunscreen starting this week. After two weeks, add a pea-sized amount of retinol two nights a week and move up to every other night only if your skin stays calm.

AAD: Retinoid or retinol?

Open a concern to see the first thing to do. Three of them end in a button that adds their treatments to the kit: an acid, a retinoid gel and patches for Acne-Prone Skin, a hydrating serum and an ointment for Dry Or Sensitive Skin, a vitamin C serum and a retinol for Aging And Sun Damage. Just The Basics adds nothing, which is the point.

04

How to choose a product from the label

How to read it

  • Read the active ingredient and its percentage, not the front of the bottle. Words like "clean", "dermatologist tested" and "hypoallergenic" have no legal definition in the US.
  • Ingredients are listed from most to least down to about 1 percent. If the ingredient a product is named after sits near the end of a long list, there is very little of it.
  • "Fragrance-free" means no scent was added. "Unscented" can mean a masking fragrance was added to cover the smell of the formula. Choose fragrance-free when your skin is reactive.
  • "Non-comedogenic" means the product was formulated not to clog pores. It is worth looking for on moisturizer and sunscreen if you break out.
  • On sunscreen, look for the words "broad spectrum" and SPF 30 or higher. Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) suit sensitive skin but can leave a white cast on deeper skin tones. Chemical filters spread clear.
  • Check the small open-jar symbol with a number such as 12M. That is how many months the product is good for after opening. Sunscreen also carries a printed expiration date.

05

What trips beginners up

What to expect

  • Expect slow feedback. Skin renews itself roughly every four to six weeks, so a treatment needs six to twelve weeks before you can judge it.
  • Expect some dryness and flaking in the first weeks of a retinoid or acid. A short adjustment period is normal. Burning, swelling or a rash is not, and means stop.
  • Expect to find that a product a friend loves does nothing for you. Skin type, climate and water hardness all change the result.

Habits to drop

  • Starting several new products at once. When something goes wrong you cannot tell which one caused it, so add one product every four weeks.
  • Using too little sunscreen, skipping it on cloudy days or indoors by a window, and never reapplying. The SPF on the label assumes a generous layer, renewed every two hours outdoors.
  • Scrubbing, washing with hot water, or cleansing until skin feels squeaky. That tight feeling is a stripped barrier, and it makes both dryness and oiliness worse.
  • Layering several strong actives on the same night. Use an acid and a retinoid on alternate nights, never together while you are new to both.
06

Safety and when to see a dermatologist

  • Do not use retinoids (retinol, adapalene, tretinoin) if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and ask your doctor about salicylic acid and any other active before using it.
  • Retinoids and exfoliating acids make skin burn more easily in the sun. Daily sunscreen is not optional while you use them, and for a week after you stop.
  • Stop a product and rinse it off if it causes burning, swelling, hives or a spreading rash. Swelling of the lips or eyelids, or trouble breathing, needs urgent medical care.
  • Keep acids and retinoids away from the eyelids, the corners of the nose and mouth, and any broken or sunburned skin.
  • See a board-certified dermatologist for deep, painful or scarring acne, for a rash that lasts more than two weeks, and for any mole or spot that is new, changing, bleeding or unlike your others. Over-the-counter products are not the tool for those.

Where to learn more

The best free sources are the ones with no product to sell you. Dermatology associations publish plain-language guides to every common concern. Ingredient decoders let you check what is in a bottle before you buy it. Science-focused writers explain why an ingredient works and how strong the evidence is, which is the fastest way to stop being swayed by packaging. Community forums are useful for routine feedback, but treat any single person's results as one data point.

08

Why the kit looks like this

The three essential lines are the whole routine, and drugstore versions of all three do the job as well as luxury ones: what you pay more for is mostly texture, scent and packaging. Sunscreen is the line worth spending on if you spend anywhere, because the best one is the one you will happily wear every day. The lip balm is there because lips get sun too and face sunscreen tastes bad. Everything behind a concern is a treatment, so buy only the set for the one concern you chose, and only after the four-week baseline. The cleansing balm is for later, if you find your evening cleanser is not shifting water-resistant sunscreen.

Stock your shelf

Every step, with its options side by side

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen and lip balm start in the kit. Take out anything you already own. The cleansing balm is optional and starts out. The treatments marked as add-ons join when you switch on Acne-Prone Skin, Dry Or Sensitive Skin or Aging And Sun Damage.
