Sports Spectating

Pick a team down the road and go watch them in person.

Sports spectating is going to games in person: buying a ticket (or walking up to a free one), finding your seat, and following the action with a few thousand other people instead of through a screen. You do not need to know the rules well, and you do not need a big-league budget. Most towns have a high school, a college or a minor league team within a short drive, and those games put you close enough to hear the players talk. What keeps people coming back is the part television leaves out: the noise when the home side scores, the regulars in the next row, and a whole afternoon with the phone in your pocket.

02

What a game day involves

The game itself runs two to three hours. Add travel, parking, security and the walk to your seat, and a typical outing takes four to five hours door to door. Most of that time is sitting, with a lot of stairs at either end. You will spend the first few visits learning the building: which gate is closest to your section, where the short food lines are, how the crowd moves at the end. After that the routine fades and you watch more closely. In person you can follow players away from the ball, see a play develop before it happens, and pick up the small habits of a team you see ten times a season.

03

Ways to be a spectator

Six ways to spend a game day

Minor league, college and high school gamesCheap seats, easy parking and a front row you can actually afford. The best place to start.

Start here

Find the closest minor league or college team, open its home schedule and buy the cheapest seat for a weeknight game. Weeknights are quieter, so you can move around and try different views.

Big-league gamesMajor pro and top college venues with 20,000 to 100,000 seats. Louder and pricier, with strict entry rules and long exits.

Start here

Pick one game a month or more ahead, read the venue's bag and entry rules on its own website, and buy an upper-level seat near midfield or center court from the team's official seller.

TailgatingArriving hours early to eat and socialize in the parking lot. At football games it is half the day.

Start here

Check the parking lot rules for your venue (when lots open, whether grills are allowed), then arrive three hours early with two chairs, a cooler and food that is already cooked.

ScorekeepingRecording every play of a baseball or softball game by hand on a paper scorecard. It keeps you locked on a slow game and leaves you a record of it.

Start here

Read a one-page guide to scoring symbols, then score just the first three innings of your next baseball or softball game. Add the rest once the shorthand stops slowing you down.

How to keep score (MLB)
Cold-Weather GamesFall football, late-season soccer and outdoor winter events, where three hours on a metal bench is the real test.

Start here

Before a game below 45°F, dress in three layers, put a blanket under you as well as over you, and open your hand warmers 20 minutes before you leave the car so they are hot at kickoff.

Sun And HeatSummer day games with no roof, where shade and water matter more than the view.

Start here

For an afternoon start, look up which side of the venue gets shade first (usually the side behind home plate or the west stand) and buy there. Put sunscreen on before you leave home and again at the midpoint.

Open a card to see what to do first. Tailgating, Scorekeeping, Cold-Weather Games and Sun And Heat each end in a button that adds that gear to the kit. The first two need nothing beyond the base kit.

04

What you can bring through the gate

Bags

Most pro and major college venues allow only a clear bag up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, plus a small clutch about the size of a hand. Backpacks and ordinary purses get turned away at the gate.

Tickets

Nearly all are mobile-only. A screenshot often will not scan, so add the ticket to your phone wallet.

Payment

Many venues are fully cashless, including parking. Bring a card.

Water and food

Rules vary a lot. Some venues allow one sealed plastic bottle or an empty one to fill inside, and others allow nothing.

Seat cushions

Flat pads are fine almost everywhere. Cushions with rigid backs, arms or zippered pockets are often banned, so check before buying one.

Rain

Umbrellas are usually prohibited because they block views. A poncho is the accepted answer.

Re-entry

Once you are scanned in, most venues will not let you back in if you leave.

05

How to pick a seat

  • Height beats closeness for understanding the game. Fifteen to thirty rows up near the middle shows you the whole field or court.
  • Low seats behind a goal, basket or end zone are close to half the action and far from the rest.
  • Aisle seats cost nothing extra and save you climbing over a row of knees.
  • For day games, find out which side is shaded. The price is often the same and the afternoon is very different.
  • Check for an obstructed or limited view note before paying. Railings, poles and overhangs do not show on a seating chart.
  • On resale sites, prices for an ordinary game usually drop in the last day or two. For a rivalry or playoff game they climb, so buy early.

The whole field from the upper deck
06

What trips up first-timers

  • Starting with a sold-out big-league game. It is the most expensive and most stressful way to find out whether you like going.
  • Arriving at start time. Parking and security can take 45 minutes at a large venue, and you miss the first score.
  • Bringing the wrong bag and walking it back to the car, or paying for a locker.
  • Dressing for the temperature at home. An open stand at night runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than the forecast feels, and a sunny one much hotter.
  • Letting the phone die. Your ticket, your payment and your ride home are all on it.
  • Buying tickets from a seller you found on social media. Use the team's site or a resale marketplace that guarantees the ticket.
  • Leaving early to beat traffic and hearing the winning play from the parking lot.
07

Where to find games and check venues

For schedules, MaxPreps covers high school teams and NCAA.com covers every college sport, and each has a search by school. Before buying a seat anywhere new, read the venue's review on Stadium Journey for parking, food and entry advice, and look up your section on A View From My Seat to see a real photo from it. The single most useful page is always the venue's own guest guide: it lists the bag policy, gate times and banned items for that building.

The top rail of the bleachers
08

Why the kit is this small

The ticket is the real cost, and at small venues it can be nothing. The gear list exists to get you through the gate and keep you comfortable for three hours: a bag security will accept, a pad for the bench, a poncho because umbrellas are banned, and a power bank because the ticket lives on your phone. Binoculars and earplugs make upper-level seats and loud arenas easier to enjoy. Everything else depends on how you watch, so the tailgating, scorekeeping, cold-weather and sun items sit behind their own add-ons. Buy for the venue you actually go to, and check its rules before ordering a bag or a cushion.

09

Pack the clear bag

Every line, with its options side by side

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The first line, the game ticket, is not something you buy here: get it from the team. The clear bag, seat cushion, poncho, phone charger, binoculars and earplugs start in the kit. The chairs and cooler join when you switch on Tailgating, the scorebook with Scorekeeping, the hand warmers and blanket with Cold-Weather Games, and the sunscreen and hat with Sun And Heat.

Row 01

Game ticket

Essential · Admission

It is the one thing you cannot watch a paid game without, and where you buy it decides whether it scans at the gate.

Not sold on Amazon · buy from the team

Not sold on Amazon. Buy from the team's own website or box office. Many college and rec league games are free, high school and minor league seats run about $5 to $20, and an upper-level seat at a big-league game is typically $25 to $60 before fees.

Row 02

Clear stadium bag

Essential · Getting in

Security at most large venues turns away anything that is not see-through, and a clear bag also speeds you through the line at venues with looser rules.
