Sticker Collecting

Hunt, sort and trade small pieces of art that cost pocket change.

You probably already own the start of a collection: the stickers in a junk drawer, the ones that came free with an order, the sheet you never dared to peel. Sticker collecting is gathering those on purpose, by theme, artist, era or brand, and keeping them in albums where you can page through them. Some collectors chase 1980s scratch-and-sniff and puffy stickers, some fill numbered albums one packet at a time, and some buy die-cut vinyl straight from the artists who draw it. Most stickers cost less than a cup of coffee, a whole collection fits on one shelf, and trading doubles by mail is a big part of it.

What sticker collectors actually do

A session is short and quiet. New stickers arrive (from a shop counter, a packet, an artist's mail order or a trade envelope) and you decide where each one belongs: which album, which page, next to what. Collectors split into two camps on the big question. Peelers take the sticker off its backing and place it on a coated album page it can be lifted from later. Keepers leave the backing on and store the sticker in a clear pocket, which is the rule for anything old or valuable. Many people do both, and nearly everyone keeps a separate stack of doubles to trade.

Which kind of collection do you want?

Three ways to build one

Vinyl and Artist StickersDie-cut stickers sold one at a time by illustrators, small shops, bands, parks and brands. This is where most people start now, because the supply is endless and you choose every piece yourself. The base kit below is all it takes.

Start here

Pick one theme (cats, national parks, one artist, local businesses) and collect ten stickers that fit it this week, from shops, markets or an artist's own online store. Place them on the first page of a reusable album.

Vintage StickersStickers from the 1980s and 1990s boom, such as scratch-and-sniff, puffy, fuzzy, prismatic and glitter designs, often sold on the original roll backing. They are bought secondhand and priced by condition.

Start here

Decide which kind you loved as a kid (scratch-and-sniff, puffy, prismatic, googly-eyed) and search online marketplaces for a small mixed lot of it. Slide each sticker, still on its backing, into a pocket page as soon as it arrives.

Album Sticker SetsNumbered sets sold in sealed packets, with a printed album that has a marked space for every sticker. Sports tournaments are the best known. The goal is a complete album.

Start here

Buy the album for one current set along with a handful of packets, stick in everything new, and write the numbers of your doubles on a list you can show to other collectors.

LastSticker

Open a kind to see its first step. Vintage Stickers and Album Sticker Sets each end in a button that adds their gear to the kit. You can switch on both.

How to judge a sticker

Material

Vinyl is waterproof, bends without creasing and peels off a coated page cleanly many times. Paper stickers tear and soak up skin oil, so they get one placement at most.

Cut

A die-cut sticker is trimmed to the outline of the art. A kiss-cut sticker sits on a larger square of backing, which protects the edges and is easier to store unpeeled.

Finish

Holographic, glitter, clear and matte finishes all exist. Hold the sticker at an angle to check for scratches, which show most on holographic film.

Backing

On older stickers the back matters as much as the front. A maker's name and date printed on the backing is how a vintage sticker gets identified, so a sticker missing its backing is worth far less.

Condition

Look for sharp corners, no creases, no yellowing and no lifting at the edges. On a scratch-and-sniff sticker, an unscratched surface is the prize, so do not test it.

Source

A sticker bought from the artist or the brand is the real thing. Large mixed packs sold very cheaply are often unlicensed copies of other people's art, fine for trading stock but not the heart of a collection.

05

How trading works

  • Trade like for like. One standard sticker for one standard sticker is the default, with larger, holographic or rare ones counting for more by agreement.
  • For album sets, keep a list of the numbers you need and the numbers you have spare. Other collectors will ask for both before anything else.
  • Mail stickers flat between two pieces of thin cardboard inside an ordinary envelope. A few stickers travel for the price of one stamp.
  • With a new trading partner, start with a small swap. Most forums and swap sites show feedback from past trades, so check it first.
  • Agree on condition before sending. Say plainly if a sticker has been peeled before or has a bent corner.
06

What trips beginners up

  • Sticking a favorite sticker onto plain paper or a laptop and regretting it. Anything you might want to move goes on a coated page or stays on its backing.
  • Peeling a vintage sticker. Old adhesive dries out or turns gummy, and a peeled 1980s sticker rarely survives a second placement.
  • Buying everything. A collection with no theme turns into a pile within a month, and sorting it stops being fun.
  • Storing albums in sun, heat or damp. Sunlight fades ink in a season, and a hot car or attic makes adhesive ooze out past the edges.
  • Using photo albums with sticky pages or soft vinyl sleeves. Both can bond to the sticker face over a few years. Look for pages labeled acid-free and free of PVC.
  • Expecting to finish a numbered album from packets alone. The last twenty stickers can take more packets than the first two hundred, which is why trading exists.
07

Where collectors gather

Sticker collecting has no governing body, so the community lives in forums, swap sites and comment sections. Posting a clear photo of a sticker's front and back is the fastest way to find out who made it and when. Artist markets, comic conventions and zine fairs are the best places to buy in person, because you meet the people who drew the work and they usually have designs that never go online.

Why the kit is this small

The stickers are the collection and they come one at a time, so the kit is mostly about storage. A reusable album is the one thing every collector uses. Tweezers and a mixed pack are cheap extras that make the first evening go better. The two add-ons cover the directions that need their own storage or their own album: clear pocket pages for vintage stickers that stay on their backing, and a printed album with packets for a numbered set.

Fill the album

Every line, with its options side by side

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The album, the tweezers and the mixed pack start in the kit. The pocket-page binder joins when you switch on Vintage Stickers, and the printed album and packet box join with Album Sticker Sets.
