Sugar Glider Keeping

Raise a pair of pocket-sized gliding marsupials that wake up when you get home.

Sugar glider keeping means caring for a pair of small nocturnal marsupials from Australia and New Guinea: feeding them a balanced mix of nectar, protein and fresh produce every evening, keeping a tall cage clean, and carrying them in a pouch until they trust you enough to climb on you and glide to your hands. They sleep all day and are busy from dusk until dawn, so they suit people who are home in the evenings. A glider lives 10 to 12 years and cannot be kept alone, so this is a long commitment to at least two animals and a vet who treats exotics.

01

What living with sugar gliders is like

Their day starts when yours winds down

A sugar glider is a marsupial about the size of your palm, with a skin membrane from wrist to ankle that lets it glide across a room. Your day with them runs backwards. They sleep in a fleece pouch until evening, then wake hungry and loud: expect barking, chirping and a rattling wheel at 2 a.m. The daily work is a fresh plate of food at dusk, a wipe-down of the cage, and an hour or two with the gliders on you or loose in a small tent while you sit with them. They cannot be litter trained and they scent-mark, so some smell and mess come with the animal. What you get in return is a pet that recognizes you, rides in your hoodie and leaps to you from across the room.

02

Check the law before you look at gliders

  • Sugar gliders are banned as pets in California, Alaska and Hawaii, and Pennsylvania restricts them so tightly that private ownership is effectively closed.
  • Several other states ask for a permit or proof that the animal was bred in captivity, and some cities ban them inside a legal state. New York City is one.
  • Rules change, so confirm with your state wildlife or agriculture agency and your city's animal control office, not a seller's word.
  • Renters need written approval. Many leases exclude exotic animals even where the state allows them.
  • Under federal rules a breeder with four or more breeding females needs a USDA license. Ask to see it.
03

How to get started

Tick these off as you go

04

Feeding

  • Pick one established diet plan and follow it exactly. Mixing parts of several plans is how the mineral balance goes wrong.
  • Every plan combines three things: a nectar or protein staple, fresh fruit and vegetables, and insects or another protein.
  • A glider eats about 15 to 20 percent of its body weight a night, roughly a tablespoon each of staple, fruit and vegetables.
  • Aim for about twice as much calcium as phosphorus across the diet. A calcium powder dusted on food or insects covers the gap.
  • Serve food at dusk and remove leftovers in the morning, since fresh food spoils fast in a warm room.
  • Never feed chocolate, caffeine, candy, fruit pits, raw meat, canned fruit or insects caught outdoors.
  • Mealworms and nuts are treats for bonding, not dinner. Too many leads to an overweight glider that skips its real food.
05

Choosing a cage and setting it up

  • Height matters more than floor space. For a pair, look for at least 24 inches wide and deep and 36 inches tall.
  • Bar spacing must be half an inch or less. A glider's head fits through anything wider.
  • Choose powder-coated or PVC-coated wire. Bare galvanized wire can rust and cause urinary infections and zinc poisoning.
  • Check that every door latches firmly. Gliders learn to lift simple sliding doors, so clip those shut.
  • The wheel needs a solid running surface and no center axle, because tails and membranes get caught in spokes and bars.
  • Hang at least two fleece pouches near the top and swap them weekly. Check seams for loose threads that can wrap around a toe.
  • Line the tray with plain paper or paper towels. Skip pine and cedar shavings, and cotton nesting material.
  • Keep the cage out of direct sun and drafts, away from the kitchen, and out of reach of cats and dogs.
  • Before any time outside the cage, close toilet lids, cover drains and vents, and put away candles and houseplants. A pop-up tent is the simplest safe space.

06

Health and vet care

  • Gliders need no vaccines, but a yearly exam with a fecal test catches parasites and weight changes early.
  • Weak or dragging back legs are the classic sign of calcium deficiency. It is an emergency, and it is preventable with the right diet.
  • A glider housed alone often overgrooms, chews itself or stops eating. A second glider is the fix, and no amount of human attention replaces it.
  • Neutering males is a quick procedure that prevents surprise joeys and reduces scent marking.
  • Adults usually weigh 3 to 5 ounces. Have the vet record each glider's weight at every visit, since a steady drop is an early warning.
  • Diarrhea, a wet or stained tail base, cloudy eyes or a glider awake and lethargic in the daytime all need a same-day call.
  • Budget $60 to $120 for a routine exam and keep an emergency fund. Exotic emergency visits commonly run several hundred dollars.
07

What trips beginners up

What to expect

  • Expect crabbing, a loud rasping alarm call, and some nips for the first weeks. It is fear, and it fades with daily pouch time.
  • Expect noise at night. The cage does not belong in a bedroom if you are a light sleeper.
  • Expect smell from scent glands and urine even in a clean cage, strongest with unneutered males.
  • Bonding takes weeks for young gliders and can take months for adults. Progress stalls if you skip days.

What not to do

  • Do not buy a single glider from a mall kiosk or fair stand. Those sales often involve underage joeys and poor diet advice.
  • Do not grab a glider from above or wake it by pulling it out of the pouch. Let it climb onto your hand.
  • Do not let gliders roam a whole house or meet other pets. Most accidental deaths are drownings, escapes and cat or dog bites.

08

Where to learn more

Start with vet-written material, because glider diet advice online is contradictory and often sold alongside a product. The Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA Animal Hospitals both publish free owner guides. Your exotics vet is the best source for a diet plan, and a local rescue can show you adult gliders and a working cage setup before you commit.

09

What the kit covers

The gliders themselves are the largest cost and are not on Amazon: a pair typically runs $300 to $800 from a breeder, less from a rescue. Of the gear, the cage is where the money should go, since a cage with the wrong bar spacing or bare wire has to be replaced. The wheel is next, because unsafe wheels cause real injuries. Pouches, dishes and toys are cheap and you will buy more over time. Food and calcium are monthly costs of roughly $20 to $40 for a pair once fresh produce is counted. Many cages ship with a plastic wheel and thin perches. Treat those as extras and still buy a safe wheel.

Set up the colony

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The first line, the gliders, is not something you buy online: they come from a licensed breeder or a rescue.

Pair of sugar gliders

essentialThe animals

Gliders live in colonies and decline when kept alone, so the starting point is two that already share a pouch.

Not sold on Amazon · licensed breeder or rescue

Not sold on Amazon. Look for a USDA-licensed breeder or a sugar glider rescue, and ask for the joeys' out-of-pouch date (8 weeks minimum) and the diet they are eating. A same-sex pair or a neutered male with a female avoids breeding. Expect $150 to $400 per glider, or a lower adoption fee for a bonded adult pair.
