Teapot Collecting

Hunt down old teapots and learn to read the story on the base.

Start with the teapot already in your kitchen cupboard: turn it over, and the mark on the base tells you who made it and roughly when. Teapot collecting is hunting for pots you like in thrift stores, antique malls and estate sales, then working out what each one is. People have been making them for more than 300 years in porcelain, stoneware, silver, cast iron and plain red clay, in shapes that run from severe to ridiculous (cottages, cats, race cars). Most 20th-century pots cost $10 to $40, a full shelf fits in a small apartment, and every pot has four things to judge: the body, the spout, the handle and the lid.

01

What teapot collecting involves

A typical outing is an hour or two walking an antique mall or a row of thrift stores, lifting lids and turning pots over. At home you look up the mark, clean out the spout, and decide where the pot sits on the shelf. Most collectors narrow down within a year, because "teapots" is too big a subject to shop for: there are tens of thousands of shapes. The narrowing is the fun part. A shelf of twelve pots that share a maker, a decade or a joke reads as a collection, while twelve unrelated pots read as a cupboard.

Ways to build a collection

One maker or potteryCollect a single factory and learn its shapes, patterns and backstamp changes. This is the easiest route to real expertise, because the mark does half the identifying for you.

Start here

Pick one maker whose mark you have already found, look up every version of its backstamp, and write down the date range for each. Then buy one common pot by that maker to study in hand.

Novelty and figural teapotsPots shaped like cottages, animals, cars and people, made mostly from the 1930s on. They are cheap to start and easy to spot across a room.

Start here

Choose one theme (animals, buildings, vehicles) and buy a single inexpensive example. Check every sticking-out part for chips before you pay, since ears, chimneys and wheels break first.

Yixing clay teapotsSmall unglazed Chinese pots in red, purple and tan clay, made since the 1500s. Old ones are heavily faked, so this direction rewards reading before buying.

Start here

Read up on the clay and its history before you spend anything, then handle real pots at a specialist tea shop so you know how an honest one feels and pours.

Silver TeapotsSterling and silver-plated pots, usually sold from sets. Plate is affordable and common, and both need their own care kit.

Start here

Find the row of small stamped marks on the base or near the handle of a silver-colored pot and look them up before buying. They tell you whether it is solid silver or plate.

Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks
One era or styleVictorian, Art Deco, mid-century or any decade you like the look of. You collect across makers and materials, tied together by outline.

Start here

Pick one decade and collect its outline: go through a museum collection online, save ten pots from those years, and note what their spouts, handles and knobs have in common.

Open a direction to see its first step. Silver Teapots adds a polishing cloth and anti-tarnish storage strips to the kit. The other four use the base kit as it is.

How to check a teapot before you buy

The lid

It should sit flat, turn without rocking, and match the body in color, pattern and wear. A lid from another pot (dealers call it "married") cuts the value sharply.

The spout tip

Run a fingertip around the rim. Chips here are the most common damage and the easiest to miss by eye.

The handle

Look at both joins under good light for fine lines or a glossy patch of glue. A reattached handle can let go when the pot is full.

Hairline cracks

Take the lid off, balance the pot on your fingertips and tap the body with a fingernail. A sound pot rings and a cracked one gives a dull click.

Crazing and staining

A fine web of lines in the glaze is normal with age, but brown stain inside the lines is permanent.

The backstamp

Read the mark, any pattern number and any "Made in" wording. A country name generally points to export ware made after 1891.

What trips beginners up

What to expect, and the habits to drop

  • Expect most pots you pick up to fail the check. Teapots were used daily, and a clean one with its own lid is the exception.
  • Unmarked pots are common and many can never be pinned to a maker. Decide early whether that bothers you.
  • Price guides and online asking prices run high. Look at sold listings to see what a pot really brings.
  • Shelf space runs out fast: a teapot takes about 10 inches of width, so a 3-foot shelf holds three or four.
  • Do not buy damaged pots because they are cheap. A chipped spout rarely becomes worth repairing.
  • Do not chase quantity. Twenty unrelated pots are harder to enjoy, display and resell than six that belong together.
  • Do not carry a pot by its handle or with the lid on. Old joins fail and lids slide: one hand under the base, lid in the other.
06

Cleaning, handling and display

  • Wash by hand in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap, in a plastic tub or a sink lined with a towel. Dishwashers strip gilding and hand-painted decoration.
  • Never soak a crazed or repaired pot. Water gets under the glaze and carries stain with it, and old glue softens.
  • Unglazed clay pots get water only, no soap. The clay is porous and holds on to whatever it absorbs.
  • Treat any old, unmarked or brightly decorated pot as display only unless you know its glaze is food safe. Some older glazes and enamels contain lead that hot, acidic tea can draw out.
  • Keep shelves out of direct sun and away from the stove. Display each lid on its pot with a small dot of museum wax, and leave a finger of space between pots so spouts do not knock.

Where to learn more

Free marks indexes and museum collections online will take you a long way: use them every time you bring a pot home, and before you pay for anything over your limit. A general antiques price guide with a marks dictionary covers makers the regional indexes miss. In person, the best teachers are antique mall dealers who specialize in china. Ask one to show you a repaired piece next to a sound one, and you will learn more in five minutes than in an hour of photos.

08

Why the kit looks like this

The first line is the teapot itself, which you buy in person, not online. Everything after it supports that purchase: a loupe to read the mark, a reference book to place the shape, putty to keep it on the shelf and a brush to clean a spout you cannot see into. The silver cloth and storage strips matter only if you collect metal pots, so they sit behind an add-on. The ultraviolet light and the risers are for later, when you are spending more per pot and running out of shelf.

09

Stock the china cabinet

The first line is your first teapot, which you find secondhand and do not buy online. For the rest, compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cabinet. Clicking a card selects it there. The loupe, reference book, museum putty and spout brushes start in the kit. The polishing cloth and storage strips join when you switch on Silver Teapots, and the UV flashlight and display risers are there for later.

Measure first: a typical teapot is 9 to 10 inches from spout tip to handle, so the riser top needs to be at least that long.
