Trainspotting

Watch, log and photograph real trains from safe public ground.

Your phone and a public place with a view of a main line are enough to start. Trainspotting (called railfanning in the US) is watching real trains and keeping a record of what you saw: the locomotive numbers, the railroad, the time, the direction, and often a photo. Part of the pull is the hunt, since every locomotive carries its own number and paint scheme and some are rare enough to chase for years. The rest is the spectacle: two miles of freight shaking the ground behind 13,000 horsepower. It is done from stations, public parks and overpasses, never from the tracks, and a first outing costs nothing.

01

What a day trackside looks like

Mostly waiting, then thirty seconds of noise

You pick a public spot beside a busy line, settle in, and wait. A main line might see a train every twenty minutes or one every two hours, so most of a session is quiet: watching signals, listening for a horn, chatting with whoever else turned up. When a train comes you note the time, the direction, the railroad and the numbers on the locomotives, and maybe take a photo. At home the log gets tidied and the unusual sightings looked up. Over months the notebook turns into a picture of how your local railroad works: which trains run daily, which locomotives are regulars, and which visitor was worth the wait.

Stay off the tracks, stay on public ground

  • The tracks are private property. In the US, rails, ballast, bridges, yards and the strip of land beside them (the right-of-way) belong to the railroad. Walking on or along them is trespassing, and railroad police do ticket and arrest for it.
  • Only watch from places the public is allowed. Station platforms, public parks, sidewalks, public road overpasses and official viewing platforms are fine. If you would have to cross a fence, a ditch or a No Trespassing sign to reach a spot, it is not a spot.
  • Keep at least 15 feet from the nearest rail. Trains are wider than the track by 3 feet or more on each side, and loose straps and shifted loads reach farther. On a platform, stay behind the yellow line.
  • Cross only at marked public crossings. Never on a bridge or trestle, in a tunnel, or through a gap between parked cars, which can move without warning.
  • Expect a train at any time, on any track, from either direction. Freight does not run to a public schedule, modern trains are quieter than you expect, and a second train can be hidden behind the first.
  • A train cannot stop for you. A loaded freight train at 55 mph needs a mile or more to stop.
  • Keep your ears free. No headphones in both ears, and no walking backward with your eye in a viewfinder.
  • Be a good guest. Do not block crossings, driveways or station doors, never use a flash at a moving train, and if staff or police ask you to move, move. Some stations limit platforms to ticketed passengers.
  • Report problems, do not fix them. Every crossing has a blue sign with an emergency phone number and a crossing ID. Call it for a stalled car or a damaged gate, and 911 for an immediate danger.
04

Ways to follow the hobby

Number loggingThe classic form. You collect sightings of individual locomotives and try to see every unit in a class or a fleet. It needs nothing beyond the base kit.

Start here

Pick one railroad and one locomotive model that runs near you, and start a list of every unit number in that class you see. Look each one up afterward to learn where it has been.

Rail PhotographyComposing trains in a landscape rather than just recording them. A phone is fine to learn on, and a long zoom lets you fill the frame from well back on public ground.

Start here

Shoot your next ten trains on your phone from one public spot, standing with the sun behind you, and compare them at home before spending anything on a camera.

RailPictures.net photo archive
Scanner ListeningFollowing railroad radio, where crews call out signals and dispatchers hand out track authority. It tells you a train is coming before you can see it. Listening is legal under federal law, but some states restrict scanners in vehicles, so check yours, and never transmit.

Start here

Listen to a free online feed of your local railroad channel for a week. Once you can pick out a train calling a signal, a scanner of your own will make sense.

Broadcastify live railroad feeds
Railcams from homeWatching and logging live camera feeds of famous locations. It costs nothing and works in any weather.

Start here

Choose one live camera and log an hour of its traffic from your couch. It is the quickest way to learn what a normal day on a main line looks like.

Open a card for its first step. Rail Photography and Scanner Listening also put their gear into the trackside bag.

05

Skills to work on first

Reading a locomotive.

The big number on the cab side is the unit number. The letters with it are the reporting mark, which names the owner. Log both, in the order the locomotives run.

Telling builders and models apart.

Start with the two shapes you will see most on freight trains, then learn the passenger power on your line. Radiator shape, truck design and the number of axles are the quick tells.

Reading signals.

Green, yellow and red over a main line show whether the track ahead is clear. A signal that lights up or changes is often your first warning that a train is on its way.

Picking light.

For a clear number and a good photo, stand on the side of the track the sun is on. Morning and late afternoon light beats noon.

Keeping a log you can search.

Same columns every time. Copy the day's notes into a spreadsheet so you can answer questions like how many times you have seen one engine.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Long waits are normal. Freight runs when it is ready. Two hours with one train happens, so pick a first spot on a busy line and bring a seat and water.
  • You will miss numbers. A train at 60 mph gives you a few seconds. Log the lead unit, photograph the rest, and fill in the others from the photo.
  • People will ask what you are doing. Usually out of curiosity. Say you are a rail fan logging trains, and be friendly.
  • Chasing a better angle onto railroad land. The most common beginner mistake and the one that gets people hurt or cited. If the public view is poor, find another public view.
  • Buying a camera or scanner before the first outing. A month with a notebook and a phone shows which direction you actually care about.
  • Leaving the date and place off a sighting. A number on its own is useless a year later.

07

Where to learn more

Maps, archives and people who know the spots

A free rail map shows where the busy lines and junctions are, and a photo archive lets you look up any locomotive number you logged. A local historical society chapter is the fastest way to meet people who know the good public spots near you, and many towns on busy lines have built viewing platforms or railroad parks worth a day trip.

08

How the kit is put together

The only thing you need is something to write in that survives rain and a jacket pocket. Binoculars come next because they let you read a number from a safe distance instead of edging closer: 8x magnification with a 42mm front lens is the standard pick, bright enough at dusk and steady enough to hold by hand, and before buying check that they focus smoothly and are sealed against rain. A field guide, a folding chair and a power bank make a long wait more useful and more comfortable. A camera and a scanner are separate directions, each behind its own add-on, and both are worth holding off on until you have a few outings in the log.

09

Pack the trackside bag

The notebook, binoculars, field guide, chair and power bank start in the bag. The camera and scanner lines stay out until you add Rail Photography or Scanner Listening, here, in the kit or from its card above. Compare the options, set your tiers and check out from the kit. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card takes that line out.

Look for optical zoom (not digital), image stabilization and fast burst shooting. The cheapest models have no eye-level viewfinder, which matters on bright days. Most charge over USB, so the power bank can top one up between trains.
