Wax Sealing

Melt, pour and press a raised seal onto anything you send.

Wax sealing is the craft of pressing an engraved metal stamp into a small pool of melted wax to leave a raised emblem on an envelope, a gift, a journal page or an invitation. Modern sealing wax is made to flex, so a seal survives handling instead of shattering like the brittle historical kind. The whole process takes about a minute per seal and the result looks far more skilled than it is, which is most of the appeal: a plain envelope turns into something people hesitate to tear open. A stamp and a few dollars of wax are enough to begin, and the rest is practice at pouring the right amount and pressing straight.

01

What wax sealing actually involves

About a minute per seal

A session happens at a table and rarely lasts more than 20 to 30 minutes, which is enough for a dozen seals. You melt a small amount of wax, pour a pool about the size of a nickel, set the stamp into it and wait for the wax to firm up before lifting. Each seal takes around a minute from pour to finished impression. The skills are small and physical: judging how much wax to melt, pouring a round pool, and lowering the stamp straight down without sliding it. Nothing needs maintaining between sessions, and the kit fits in a shoebox.

02

Which way should you melt the wax?

Picking one puts that method's wax and heat source into the kit and takes the other two out. The stamp and the mat stay either way, and you can still switch any line in or out from the kit.

03

How to choose a stamp, and what to do before each session

  • Start with a head about 1 inch (25 mm) across. It is the size most wax quantities and tutorials assume. Larger heads need more wax and are harder to fill evenly.
  • Choose a solid brass head. Brass holds cold well, which sets the wax quickly and gives a crisp edge.
  • Look for a head that unscrews from the handle. You can add new designs later by buying heads alone, which cost less than complete stamps.
  • Pick a bold design for your first stamp: a single initial, a leaf, a bee, a moon. Hairline detail and tiny lettering blur until your pours are consistent.
  • Check the engraving before you use it. Letters should read backwards on the metal so they read correctly in the wax, and the cut should be deep enough to catch a fingernail.
  • Before each session, tighten the head on its handle, rest the stamp face down on an ice pack for a couple of minutes, then wipe off any condensation. A cold, dry stamp releases cleanly.
  • After the session, wipe the brass with a soft dry cloth. If wax is stuck in the engraving, chill the head in the freezer for ten minutes and the wax will pop out.

How to make your first seal

Tick these off as you go

What you can make in your first month

A practice sheet of ten seals

Poured on a mat in one sitting so you can compare them and see your pour size settle down.

A sealed card envelope

One seal on the flap of a birthday or thank-you card that you hand over in person.

A highlighted seal

A cooled seal with its raised design picked out in metallic marker, glued into a journal or onto a gift tag.

A gift sealed over twine

Wax poured over the knot of a wrapped present in place of a bow.

A tin of ready-made seals

A dozen matching seals made ahead on the mat, set aside for future letters and gift tags.

05

Where people take it

Open one to see where to start

Wedding and event invitationsFifty to two hundred matching seals made in an evening or two. This is where most people first meet the craft, and where speed and consistency matter more than anything else.

Start here

Count your invitations, add ten percent for rejects, and make every seal in one sitting on a nonstick mat rather than on the envelopes. A glue gun keeps the pour the same size each time, which is what makes a batch look matched.

Snail mail and pen palsA seal on each letter you send. Most regular letter writers make seals ahead of time and stick them on, since a pre-made seal can go on any envelope in seconds.

Start here

Make a dozen seals on a nonstick mat this week, press an adhesive dot onto the back of each and keep them in a small tin. The next letter you write gets a seal in five seconds with nothing to heat.

Journals, planners and scrapbooksSeals used as decoration on a page rather than as a closure, often highlighted with metallic color or poured over a pressed flower.

Start here

Pour a seal on your mat, let it cool, then run a metallic marker lightly across the raised design so only the high points catch the color. Glue it to this week's journal page.

Gift wrap and packagingSeals over twine, ribbon or a paper band on presents, favor bags and small-business orders.

Start here

Wrap a small gift in plain paper, tie it with twine and pour your seal directly over the knot. The wax locks the twine in place and stands in for both the bow and the tag.

Custom stampsHaving your own monogram, logo or drawing engraved onto a brass head, once you know which size and level of detail you like to stamp.

Start here

Sketch a design in solid black and white at the size of a quarter: an initial, a leaf, a simple animal. If it still reads clearly from across the room, it will engrave well. Then send that drawing to a custom stamp engraver.

Open a use to see its first step. Invitations, stick-on seals and decorated seals each add their own lines to the kit.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Expect your first five or six seals to be rejects. Pour size is learned by feel, and it settles within a session.
  • The stamp warms up as you work. After three or four seals in a row the impressions go soft and the wax starts to stick, so return the stamp to the ice pack between seals.
  • Seals are never perfectly round. An uneven edge is part of the look, and chasing a perfect circle wastes wax.
  • Lifting too early is the most common mistake. It smears the design and leaves wax packed into the engraving.
  • Overheating the wax makes it thin and bubbly. Take the spoon off the flame as soon as the last pellet has melted, and stir once with a toothpick to release bubbles.
  • A wet stamp leaves a cloudy, pitted surface. Always wipe off condensation after chilling.
  • Old-style brittle wax cracks when an envelope bends. For anything that will be handled or mailed, buy wax described as flexible or mailable.
07

Sending seals through the mail

  • Postal sorting machines bend envelopes around rollers at high speed. A seal on the outside can be scuffed, cracked or torn off, even when the wax is flexible.
  • The safest option is to put the sealed envelope inside a plain outer envelope. Wedding invitations are traditionally sent this way.
  • If you want the seal on the outside, ask at the post office counter for the letter to be treated as nonmachinable. It costs a surcharge on top of the stamp and keeps the envelope out of the sorting machines.
  • Keep seals thin for mail. A thick seal makes the envelope lumpy, which can trigger the same surcharge whether you asked for it or not.

08

Hot wax and open flame

  • Melted sealing wax is hot enough to blister skin. If it lands on you, hold the spot under cool running water right away instead of trying to wipe the wax off.
  • Never leave a lit tea light or a burning wick stick unattended, and keep paper, sleeves and long hair out of reach of the flame.
  • The bowl and neck of a melting spoon stay hot for a minute after they leave the flame. Hold it only by the wooden handle and park it on the warmer, not on the table.
  • Work in a room with some airflow and keep children and pets away from the table until everything has cooled.
09

Where to learn more

Wax sealing is learned mostly by watching someone pour. Short videos on any video platform show pour size and timing better than text can, so search for a tutorial that uses the same melting method you chose. The written guides linked here cover the methods side by side and are worth reading once before your first session.

10

Why the kit looks the way it does

The stamp is the only thing every method shares, so it is the one essential line, and the nonstick mat is recommended because it turns practice into something you can peel up and throw back in the pot. Everything else depends on how you melt the wax, which is why the wax and its heat source sit behind the three method add-ons: choose one and its lines join the kit. Wick sticks are the cheapest way in at roughly the price of a sandwich on top of the stamp. The spoon route costs the most because it needs a warmer and candles as well as wax. All-in-one boxed kits exist, but they tend to pair a decent stamp with a small amount of brittle wax, so buying the parts separately usually gets you better wax for the same money. The last two add-ons are for specific uses and can wait until you know you want them.

11

Stock the sealing desk

The stamp and the mat start on the desk. The wax and its heat source join once you pick a melting method, above or from the add-ons in the kit, and the stick-on and decorating lines stay off until you want them. Compare the options, then set your tiers and check out from the kit. Clicking a card selects it there.
