What a session looks like

A session is seated, quiet and repetitive in a pleasant way. The block sits on a stand at chin height, the cap or lace is pinned to it, and you add hair row by row or knot by knot while a show plays in the background. Sewn work goes fast: a row of weft takes ten to fifteen minutes. Knotting is slow by nature, and most people do it in one-hour sittings because the eyes and the wrist tire before the patience does. Nothing is wet, hot or noisy, so the project can stay pinned up on a desk corner between sessions.

Same block, different hair

Sewn Weft WigsRows of weft stitched onto a stretch dome cap, usually finished with a lace closure at the part. The fastest route to something wearable and the usual place to start.

Start here

Measure your head, pin a dome cap onto the block, and sew your first row of weft along the nape from ear to ear. Do one row a night until it feels routine.

Hand-Tied LaceSingle strands knotted into fine lace with a tiny hooked needle, a process wig makers call ventilating. It gives the most natural hairline and is how stage and film wigs are made, at the cost of many hours.

Start here

Pin a palm-sized square of lace to the block and practice the basic knot with a few strands at a time until you can fill one square inch evenly. Do not start a hairline until that inch looks tidy.

What you can make in your first month

A closure wig

Weft rows sewn onto a dome cap with a lace closure at the top, wearable the day you finish it.

A thickened costume wig

A plain synthetic wig with extra weft rows sewn in so no cap shows when it is parted or spiked.

A practice lace sampler

A small square of lace knotted full of hair, which is how every hand-tied hairline starts.

A two-tone piece

Weft rows in two colors alternated on one cap for a streaked or split-dye look.

Choosing and setting up the block head

Size matters more than anything else.

Blocks are sold by circumference, usually 21 to 24 inches, and most adult heads fall between 21.5 and 23. A wig built on a block that is too big will slide when you wear it.

If you are between sizes, buy the smaller one and pad it out with a folded towel under plastic wrap.

You cannot shrink a block.

Pick a canvas-covered block with a firm cork or dense foam fill.

White foam display heads are too small and too soft to hold pins under tension.

Check the hole in the base.

Most are about one inch across and fit a standard clamp or tripod, but confirm before buying the two separately.

Before each session, tighten the stand, tilt the head so the area you are working on faces you, and re-pin anything that has loosened.

Skills to practice first

An even stitch

Wefts are held by a simple loop-and-knot stitch every half inch. Consistent spacing is what makes a wig lie flat.

Row spacing

Wide at the nape, tight at the crown. Too wide shows cap, too tight makes a heavy, hot wig.

Pinning under tension

A cap or lace that is pinned taut produces a wig that fits. Loose pinning produces a baggy one.

Hair direction

Every row or knot sets the way the hair will fall. Decide the part and the fall before the first stitch.

The knot (for lace work)

Catch a few strands, pull a loop through one hole of the lace, and draw the ends through the loop. It takes a few hundred tries to become automatic.

What trips beginners up

A full hand-knotted wig is 40 hours or more of work even for someone practiced. Start with a small lace piece, not a whole head.
First wigs are usually too thick. Three bundles is plenty for most lengths, and more hair does not look more natural.
Human hair costs real money, so practice stitches and knots with cheap synthetic hair before cutting into the good bundles.
Skipping the measurements. A wig built to the block instead of to your head will not sit right.
Cutting weft at the end of every row. Each cut end sheds, so fold it back and keep going.
Using a needle that is too large for the lace. If the hook snags or tears holes, drop a size.
Brushing synthetic fiber from the roots down. Start at the ends with a wide comb or the fiber frizzes for good.

Where to learn

Sewn wigs are well covered by free video: search for a closure wig built on a dome cap and watch two or three different makers before your first row, since each one handles the area around the closure a little differently. Lace knotting is harder to learn from a screen because the motion is tiny. If a theater costume shop, a community college theater program or a wig studio near you runs a ventilating class, one afternoon in person saves weeks of guessing. The standard textbook is Wig Making and Styling by Martha Ruskai and Allison Lowery, which many libraries carry. How the kit is put together

The block, stand, pins, needles and thread are the same whichever kind of wig you build, and together they cost less than a single salon visit. The hair is where the budget goes. A plain synthetic wig and a pack of matching wefts for costume work costs about what a pizza night does, while three bundles of human hair and a closure for a sewn wig can run past two hundred dollars. Pick one of the three directions and add only its lines: you do not need lace and a ventilating needle to sew wefts, or bundles to restyle a costume wig.
