Wildlife Watching

Learn where animals are at dawn, then be there quietly.

You can start wildlife watching with your own eyes and a free hour at first light. The hobby is finding wild mammals and other large animals (deer, foxes, otters, elk, bears, seals, whales) and watching what they do without changing it. Most of the skill is timing and patience: knowing that animals move at dawn and dusk, reading tracks and trails, and sitting still downwind until something walks out. A pair of binoculars is the only real purchase. The same habits carry from a city park to a national park, a whale watch boat or a safari vehicle.

What a morning of wildlife watching looks like

Before sunrise, wind in your face

You arrive before sunrise, while it is still gray, and walk in quietly with the wind in your face. You pick a place with a wide view of an edge (a meadow margin, a pond shore, a creek bend), sit with your back against a tree, and stop moving. For the first twenty minutes nothing happens. Then the place forgets you are there. You scan slowly with your eyes, raise binoculars only when something moves, and watch for as long as the animal lets you. By mid-morning most mammals have bedded down, so you walk the trails looking at tracks and droppings to learn who else uses the place. The evening shift starts about an hour before sunset.

03

Where you can take it

Open one to see the first thing to do. Open Country, Bear Country, Whale Watching and Safari can each add their own gear to the daypack.

Close to homeParks, greenways, creeks and field edges hold deer, foxes, raccoons, beavers and muskrats. This is where you learn fieldcraft, and it needs nothing beyond the base kit.

Start here

Pick one spot within 15 minutes of home where woods or water meet open ground, and visit it at dawn three times this week. Note what you see and where it came from.

Open CountryNational parks, refuges and prairies, where elk, bison, pronghorn and wolves are watched from roadside pullouts at half a mile or more. A spotting scope on a tripod turns a brown dot into an animal.

Start here

Find the nearest national wildlife refuge with an auto tour route and drive it slowly in the first hour of daylight, stopping at pullouts to scan with a scope.

National Wildlife Refuge System
Bear CountryHiking and watching where black or grizzly bears live. The viewing is some of the best in North America, and it comes with rules and one piece of safety gear.

Start here

Read the park service bear safety page before your trip, then practice drawing the spray from its holster until you can do it without looking.

NPS Staying Safe Around Bears
Whale WatchingHalf-day boat trips, or free watching from headlands during migration. You look for blows, backs and tail flukes, and the boat does the fieldcraft for you.

Start here

Look up which whales pass your nearest coast and in which months, then book a half-day trip with an operator that follows the federal viewing guidelines.

Whale SENSE operators
SafariGuided game drives, usually in eastern or southern Africa, with a guide who finds the animals. Your job is packing light and looking well.

Start here

Choose the animals you most want to see first. That decides the country and the month. Then ask operators how many guests share a vehicle and whether every seat is a window seat.

04

How to choose and set up binoculars

Pick 8x42

The first number is magnification, the second is the width of the front lenses in millimeters. Eight power is steady in the hand and shows a wide view, and 42 mm lenses stay bright in the dim light when mammals are moving.

Avoid high power

Ten power and above shake more and show less of the scene. Zoom binoculars are dimmer and less sharp at every setting.

Check for waterproofing and fog proofing

Dawn means dew and cold glass. Look for sealed, gas-filled barrels.

Glasses wearers need long eye relief

Look for 16 mm or more and twist the eyecups all the way down.

Set the hinge

Bend the two barrels until you see one clean circle, not two overlapping ones.

Set the diopter once

Cover the right lens and focus on a sign with the center wheel. Then cover the left lens and sharpen the same sign with the ring on the right eyepiece only. After that, the center wheel focuses both eyes.

05

Distance, ethics and safety

Most wildlife in national parks
100yards
Bears and wolves
100yards
Whales, as a general guideline

Keep your distance

National parks ask for at least 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from bears and wolves. Individual parks set their own figures, so check before you go.

If the animal changes what it is doing, you are too close

A raised head, a stare, or a move away means back off.

Never feed wildlife

Fed animals lose their fear of people and are often killed as a result. It is also illegal in national parks.

Leave young animals alone

A fawn or seal pup lying by itself is almost always waiting for its mother.

Large herbivores injure more visitors than predators do

Bison, moose and elk charge when crowded, especially with calves or during the fall rut.

Carry bear spray in bear country

Keep it where you can reach it, make noise on blind corners and travel in a group. You cannot fly with bear spray, so buy or rent it where you land.

At sea, federal law protects marine mammals

The general guideline is 100 yards from whales, with larger distances for some species and regions.

Tell someone where you are going

Do it every time you head out alone before dawn, and carry a light for the walk back.

06

What trips beginners up

  • Expect empty outings. Wild mammals are scarce, shy and mostly nocturnal. Seeing nothing for an hour is normal, and the sightings you do get mean more for it.
  • Expect distance. Most views are of a small animal far away, not the frame-filling scene from a documentary.
  • Going at midday. Between 10 am and 4 pm most mammals are bedded down. Shift your outings to the ends of the day.
  • Walking the whole time. A moving person is seen and heard by everything. Sitting still for an hour beats covering five miles.
  • Ignoring the wind. Approaching with the wind at your back empties a meadow before you reach it.
  • Looking for whole animals. Beginners scan for a deer and miss the ear. Look for movement, shapes and color that do not belong.
  • Chasing a closer look. Walking toward an animal ends the sighting. Stay put and let it come to you.

07

Where to learn more

Close-up of a cloven deer hoof print pressed into damp, mossy soil
A deer hoof print in damp soil

The fastest teacher is a guided walk. National wildlife refuges, state parks and nature centers run free or cheap dawn walks, owl prowls and tracking workshops, and the volunteer leading one knows exactly where the local otters are. Between outings, read species accounts for the animals you have already seen: learning what a fox eats and when it breeds tells you where to wait for it next month.

08

Why the kit looks like this

Binoculars are the only essential, and they take most of the budget because cheap glass goes dark exactly when animals are active. Everything in the recommended tier is small: two pocket guides to name what you see and the signs it leaves, a harness so the binoculars are on your chest and not in a bag, and a headlamp with a red beam for walking in and out in the dark without ruining your night vision. A sit pad is optional and solves one problem, a cold wet seat during a long wait. The add-ons only matter if you take that path: a scope and tripod for open country, bear spray for bear country, glare and spray protection for a boat, and a short packing list for safari.

09

Pack the daypack

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the cart. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. Lines tagged with an add-on (Open Country, Bear Country, Whale Watching, Safari) stay out of the daypack until you switch that add-on on.
