Worldbuilding

Invent a place that does not exist, then figure out how it works.

You can start worldbuilding tonight with any notebook and pen you already own. Worldbuilding is inventing a fictional place and working out its details: the geography, who lives there, what they believe, and the history that explains why things are the way they are. Some people build a world to set a novel or a tabletop campaign in. Plenty build one for its own sake, the way other people keep a model railroad. The pull is that every answer raises a better question: put a desert on the map and you have to decide who crosses it, what they trade and who taxes them.

01

What a session looks like

One question at a time

A typical session is an hour or two at a desk with one question in front of you. Why is the capital built on a swamp? What do people here do with their dead? You write until the answer raises two more questions, note those for next time, and stop. Over a few weeks the notes pile up into what builders call a world bible: maps, timelines, and pages on peoples, places and beliefs. Nobody grades it and it is never finished. Most of the work is noticing consequences. If iron is rare, plows are wooden, harvests are small and cities stay small too.

One-page world summary

The premise, the main peoples and the central conflict, short enough to read aloud in two minutes.

A regional map

One coastline, a mountain range, three rivers and five named settlements, in pencil.

A ten-event timeline

The handful of wars, disasters and discoveries that explain the present day.

A culture sheet

One people described by what they eat, wear, trade, worship and argue about.

A short legend

A 300-word story that people inside the world tell their children.

03

Directions a world can grow in

Open one to see where to start

Story settingsA world built to hold a novel or short stories. You develop only what the plot touches, and the base kit covers it.

Start here

Write a 500-word scene of an ordinary morning in your world, then list every detail you had to invent to finish it. That list is your to-do list.

Hand-drawn mapsGeography first. You ink coastlines and mountain ranges, and the map tells you where the borders and trade routes belong.

Start here

Draw one region on a single sheet in pencil: a coastline first, then mountains, then rivers running from the mountains to the sea. Ink it only once the rivers make sense.

Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator
Tabletop campaignsA world other people get to walk around in. It needs towns, dangers and travel distances your players can act on.

Start here

Build one town, one danger within a day of travel and three people who want something. That is enough for a first session, and you can build outward from wherever the players go.

Constructed languagesInvented sound systems and grammar, used at first to make place names and personal names sound like they belong together.

Start here

Pick about 15 consonants and 5 vowels, decide which combinations are allowed, and name ten places on your map using only those sounds.

The Language Construction Kit

Open a direction to see its first step. Maps, campaigns and languages each add their own gear to the kit, and you can switch on more than one.

04

Skills to practice early

Asking "then what?"

Follow each decision to its consequence. A river that floods every spring decides where people build and when they plant.

Starting small

One valley with real detail teaches you more than a continent of empty labels.

Borrowing from history

Read how a real port, monastery or nomad camp worked, then change one variable.

Keeping notes findable

Date every page and give each topic its own card, so you can check what you already decided.

Leaving blanks on purpose

Mark an area unknown and move on. Gaps give you room to add things later.

05

What trips beginners up

Expect it, then move on

  • Expect your first world to resemble the books and games you love. That is normal, and it fades as you add your own answers.
  • Expect contradictions. You will write that a city is landlocked and later give it a harbor. Pick one, fix the note, keep going.
  • Stop trying to design the creation myth, the gods and five thousand years of history before you have named one street.
  • Stop redrawing the map every week. Changing coastlines feels like progress and leaves every culture page out of date.
  • Do not copy a real culture wholesale under a new name. Combine sources and work out why your version differs.
  • If the world is for a story or a game, start the story or the game by week four. Building forever is the most common way to never write it.
06

Where to learn and share

  • The r/worldbuilding subreddit is the largest place to post a map or a page of lore and get questions back.
  • Worldbuilding Stack Exchange answers "would this work?" questions about climate, biology and technology with real science.
  • Artifexian on YouTube walks through planets, climates and languages one step at a time.
  • Brandon Sanderson's university lectures, free on YouTube, cover how setting and magic systems serve a story.
  • Local libraries and game stores often host writing groups and campaign nights where people trade settings in person.

How the kit is put together

Worldbuilding costs almost nothing, so the list is short. The essentials are a notebook that survives a year of daily use and a stack of index cards, because a world grows sideways and cards can be reshuffled when a bound page cannot. The recommended lines are a box to keep those cards in order and one good guide book. Everything else sits behind a direction: pens and heavy paper if you want to ink maps, dice and hex paper if you are building for a game table, a language guide if you want your place names to share a sound. Add a direction when you start working in it, not before.

Fill the map chest

Compare the options below, then set your tiers and check out from the chest. Clicking a card selects it there. The notebook, index cards, card box and guide book start in the chest. The map, tabletop and language lines join once you switch on that direction.
